Do you have long hair and never trim??

Just curious to know if it is possible to have healthy long hair without trimming. Please let me know if you are one of the lucky ones.

I certainly think it's possible if you take care of your hair well then you should be able to have healthy ends that don't really need trimming, thus helping you retain length and have long hair.

Trimming doesn't make your hair grow but not trimming can cause problems (like tangles, large knots) if your ends are damaged/split/knotted.

I don't think FLowerhair trims very often and she has super long hair.

I didn’t trim during the first year of my hair journey (now going on the 2nd). I didn’t necessarily have healthy ends, but I never exposed them anyway; I was always doing some sort of protective stilling, and I would only flat iron to check my length. The idea was to retain length and NOT wear my hair out, but as soon as I started wearing my hair down (straight) I started trimming/dusting again. I think the curly girls can get away with not trimming but straight hair looks better with healthy full ends..:yep:.

I haven't trimmed in 7 months and I might go a full year. I don't do my own trims, and I'm trying to grow out some layers (from last year's trim), so I'm hoping for enough growth to blunt cut when I do go. I am a 99%-of-the-time bunner, so my ends are up, protected, and not visible if they aren't even.

I started my healthy hair journey August 2008. That's the last day I trimmed my hair.:look:
I went to get a relaxer last week after a 12 week stretch and was told that my hair was very healthy and my ends were looking good. My hair isn't long, but I've gone almost a year without a trim and my hair is the healthiest its ever been.:yep:

I don't trim my hair. I started at NL, now WL.
I keep my hair in a bun everyday, a "wash-n-go bun" which has kept my ends pretty healthy.

Teri from biracialhair.org does not trim and she has curly tailbone length . I have been tempted to try her conditioning method by smoothing all my curls would take sooo much time lol. (just lazy) IMO, if you take good care of ends by conditioning/sealing and not wearing hair out as much as possible I think you can not have to trim. If you do wear hair out, I think the key is to use products that smooth and protect the cuticle from the elements and manipulation.

I'm still trying to find away to protect ends without trimming. I was looking for a natural solution to cones. But on biracialhair.org she lists a lot of products that help hair and cones are recommended. I might reconsider them, Especially since I have had success with CHI Silk Infusion. When I get splits cut off, I feel good I'm getting rid of damaged hair. On the other hand, a part of me dies because I feel I could have took better care and retained it :ohwell:

Yes, I trim maybe once a year at the very most... :)
The key is to keep your ends in good shape.

Nichole21, how long did it take u to go from NL to WL without trimming? Did u "wash-n-go" bun the whole time? Did u use other protective styles? Sorry so many questions but inquiring minds want to know! LOL!

:nono: i can't do it. i hit APL and i haaaaad to trim, and i am a curly girl. it's got to have something to do with my detangling or frequent use of the WNG, so without those i would probably be fine.

Well cones aren't all that bad (crazy talk right?). Here's a few posts on The Beauty Brains blog that changed my thinking about cones. I still don't use them, but only because they aren't natural. And if I decided to use heat, I'd definitely use them.

Those are two things that killed my retention. Not detangling often lets the shed hair build up and create tangles and knots. Wearing WNG's and letting my hair shrink up over and over again created more knots and tangles. Both cause more problems than they're worth. Now I detangle more often and I don't wear WNG's as much.

I started at APL in March 2006 but my hair was badly heat damaged. I tried to say it but it just had to be cut, so in May of 2006 I cut it to NL. That was my starting length and around that time I joined BHM and really learned how to care for my hair.

I started bunning in October of 2006 after reading several threads/posts about the benefits of bunning. I've been bunning most of the time since. I do take my hair down sometimes, swing it around, let it get a breather! I usually keep my hair up in a bun for the whole week (twice a week now that I'm transitioning). I don't take it down, I just rub on a moisturizer and a sealer.

Some other protective styles I do are two connecting french braids (to-the-back) and banding my hair. Most days my hair is in a bun.

I also don't use any heat on my hair.

I had the longest, most pretty hair ever when I didn't trim for a year (check fotki). :( I want my hair back. :cry3:

I gotta say there is something to not trimming the hair. The last time I trimmed was like November of last year, according to the Moon Phase of cutting. I was scheduled to trim in January and missed it. My next time scheduled was in March. I noticed that my hair was longer, at least that 1/2 inch longer and little more before that next time to trim. It was then that I started to think about the people on here that I have heard of that don't trim and have good growth. I also remembered that I didn't get my hair trimmed as a little girl and my hair was very long.

So I stopped trimming. I will trim in November of this year or March of next year. I'll see how my end feels as time goes on.

So far so good, with natural products only, and my hair is like past my lips in the front, and just a little longer than NL in the back stretched. I am noticing that the key to this is protective styling. Since my hair is so short, I am in two strand twists all the time.

I haven't trimmed in almost 2 years. I dust and do search and destroys. My goal is to get to my desired hair length and then do a blunt cut. Although I must say I love my V, but the darn thing gives me a mullet when my hair is curly.
