Exactly, it's one thing to encourage, but to INSULT, make HORRIBLE comments and generally going of on a person because they decide to style their hair differently is on a whole other level.

It really isn't that serious, especially if it's not your hair. It's just HAIR!
 
Wow.....this is getting deep!!! Ok I'm a relax head, BUT I think the term "Nazis" is kinda messed up, but I agree with one lady about the tone.....I hate when naturals criticize those who are relaxed or those who choose to use direct heat weekly.....it's like another battle among blk women......being relax or natural is like being ligth skin or dark skin and things like this shouldn't be this way......if you are relaxed, be happy and be proud, if you are natural, be happy and be proud.....NO ONE should be afraid to be relax and loving it or be natural and loving it.....and no one should criticze the naturals for being natural.....opinions are opinions.....everyone is entitle to their opinions, but don't criticze someone for their choice of style.......that's how some people are....I mean this place is like my zen from reality....I like coming here and looking at everyone's progress and everyone's advice.......but I don't like being criticize.....

MSA----you give out good advice....hell I might have to come to you when I decide to go natural, so keep giving out your advice.....somethings I might disagree with, but I will still listen and take it into consideration.......

With me.....I'm not going to say what's bad or what's better for one, not trying to be selfish, but I'm about myself.....if it sounds good then hey, what the heck.....but I won't criticize no one...

I'm relaxed, but...There are so many relaxer nazis out there, black women,hair stylists, american society discouraging and insulting black hair encouraging blacks to always straighten, shaming nappy hair,....that I can deal with some natural nazis annoying as they maybe. It's EASY to see where they became radicalized in a world that hates natural black hair so much, we need some counter extremism before people can balance out...and also people get radicalized for a reason it's totally understandable

Honestly, based on my experience; I will take a Natural Nazi over a Relaxer Retard anyday!! At least you get helpful advice (albeit unsolicited and unwanted) from the NN's. Natural Nazi's are few and far between. I get most of the rude and insulting comments about my hair and the fact that I wear it up often from the RR's. Relaxer Retards are famous for the, "You look like a school teacher!" comments. Or here's one of my favorites, "So when are you going to DO something with THAT?!" :perplexed

ETA: I am a natural hair advocate and proud of it! :yep:

I'll say this bit after reading the comments on the article:

I'm registered to at least 5 different hair boards, 3 of which I peruse daily, which includes nappturality, naturally curly, and long hair care forum. I love ALL of these boards because of the variety of info, amusement, what have you.

It's hilarious to see people attacked on nappturality, because posters just can't or won't read the rules, even when people politely tell them, they still want to run off and cry. Yes, I have seen some get snippy, but there are some that are so damned hard headed that know the rules, yet still want to talk about heat, this that and the third.

It may be a small thing to people, but for some it's not. They are really struggling and may be trying to resist heat, or chemicals and to have someone talking about it...I don't know, maybe like putting a fine brandy under a recovering alcoholic's nose? Sorry, only analogy I could think of right now.

But if you know it's a no heat, no chemical forum, why are you asking questions and then turning around fussing when you get the response that you do? There are OTHER boards that you can join if you want to talk about those things...like here! When I meet people and they tell me they want to go natural but want to use heat and need advice, I direct them here!

But, they are not only on np. I've seen things on other boards that make me go DAYUM people are hard core! Damn near cyber~bullets were flying.

Youtube and fotki is another matter, there are just people in this world who are board and either need some great sex and/or a stiff drink to loosen then the hell up, cause they are just intent on being miserable and ornery and want to put that on other people.

Personally, I've seen a little bs on a few boards, but I think that where people will be, will always be some bs. I don't think anyone should insult or put down someone because of their choices. Or tell someone what they should use, shouldn't use, how they should spend their money....

Ah, nothing will change though. Which is why I don't really give a damn about anyone's negative comments. I had one IDIOT tell me I was trying to define my curls (on fotki and youtube) and that I was obsessed with curl definition. Boyyyy, I couldn't believe her. I wanted to say really stupid, since I can't define what I don't have, what do I have? But some people are worth the waste of cyber space. So I delete comments and keep it moving. Those *****z aren't paying my bills.

ok. got it now. Yea I've been reflecting on this, not just the hair thing, but the propensity for people to become "fundamentalist" when they get "new." I support "newness" its a wonderful thing. It can really supply rocket fuel to get you through the hardest part of being "new;" however -

As soon as you got it, that zeal - then that easiness to make a fool out of yourself by telling everybody else how wrong they are starts to creep in. Its a terrible thing because - as quickly as that zest comes, that's as quickly as it goes, and you are either back to being who you were but worse, or you've solidified yourself into this "newness" but it is a life of dysfunctional it can be very isolating.

This goes for newly religious folks, and the same applies to hair people, "natural/organic" food people, homeschoolers, no leather wearers, PETA people, you name the group, and there's a fundamentalist in the lurch waiting to attack YOU!

Gettaouuutta here with that. Be normal for your own sake and your mental health and mine; cause it's embarrassing to be a fundamentalist one day and try and come around the next saying "wuz up!"

Lol I like the title to this thread. I say live and let live and do whatever you want to do with your hair. However, with that said I am tired of seeing celebs and others who should know better sporting horrible weaves and tacky wigs :nono: If u r going to weave or wig it up at least do it well.

What I continually find interesting is that 1)I rarely have someone get upset with me for giving them suggestions or pointing them in the direction of helpful threads and 2) it seems to be that the people who take issue with me providing suggestions/advice are also the least likely people to jump in a thread to help a newbie or answer someone's questions.

Whatever else I may be, I always try to be helpful to EVERYONE, relaxed and natural.
 
That's why I never mention natural/relaxed anymore.

I just give advice based on my own hair and anyone that wants to take my advice is welcome to it.

Some people are stuck on bad hair habits, naturals & relaxed heads alike, and there is no way they want to take advice and actually use it LOL!

As long as my hair is healthy and looks good to me I couldn't care less what anyone else does...had to let that one go! :lol:

So true! And then they want to run and talk about how awful NP is... didn't you read the rules before you bothered to register & post? :lachen: That board has its mission. I completely understand it, and I'm grateful it's there, for one; it changed my life and it changed my mindset. If you want to talk about all that other stuff, there are plenty of other places online to go. Let NP be what it is, because it is useful and necessary for a lot of people. I'm definitely thankful I found NP as it was when I did, and I'm thankful that I found it before this place or any other place. NP is definitely a bubble, but then again... so is this place. How many folks think we are crazy & extreme here for popping 50-11 supplements, drinking raw eggs, using horse conditioner and so forth? Not everyone does it or agrees, but we know why it's done, we know why others are doing it. They have their 'unusual customs' there and we have our 'unusual customs' here. They have rules there and we have rules here. If you don't like 'em... well, you know the rest. :grin: NP is about changing minds, it's never been 'just hair' on NP. That's just the way it is, and is made abundantly clear in the rules, the mission statement, etc. That's why it's imperative to read before you go on a posting spree. :grin: If it is "just hair" for you, NP may not be the place for you to go. Just like if you wanted to wear a baldie forever, LHCF probably is not the place for you to be. It really is that simple.

And you have to consider the reality for a lot of black women. I know... your family and friends all loved nappy hair and you never heard of such a thing before, and where you live it's always naturals being mean to relaxed women and so forth... yeah. But that just ain't reality for a good deal of us. At least from what I see IRL every day, relaxed or otherwise straightened is still the norm. Having very nappy hair is far more likely to get you talked about, looked down on, and looked at strangely than having relaxed hair; and "Natural Nazis" are few and far between. Given that, I must ask: Is it really surprising that some people become passionate and/or militant? Really? :ohwell:

Personally, I am passionate. To me, hair is a socio-political thing, but also a personal expression thing, as well as a beauty thing, as well as a fun thing. :ohwell: Whatever a person believes, they have just as much right to voice their viewpoints as do those who say "just hair". :ohwell: And people have the right to complain about the militant folks, and the militant folks have the right to complain about the "just hair" folks. I find that both sides feel they are unquestionably right and can have stank attitudes about it.

Personally, I came to the conclusion that talking about it to others is useless, ESPECIALLY on the internet. Rather, I just wear my hair the way I do, and hope I can encourage someone to see a new option or be less fearful of their own natural hair.

As for mean anonymous Fotki comments, that's not even a thing of being natural, militant, or whatever. That's just someone being ignorant. if you don't like what you see in someone's Fotki, keep it moving.

But if you are in someone else's community where they have set rules and a set agenda, and you are posting something that's not allowed, then people are right to tell you so. They don't have to be rude in doing so, but they are right.

Why in the hell are you soo hung up over somebodys hair?? Yeah i can see there arent that many naturals vs relaxed heads, but soo what?? Get over it. Be happy that their are others trying to become natural or who are natural.

I'm natural, but I usually flat iron.

I get the relaxer nazis (my family and some friends) telling me to go straight permanently. I also get the natural nazis who decry my use of a blowdryer and a flat iron.

It's a little daunting sometimes because hair is a touchy subject for black women. I think we all should strive for healthy hair, natural and relaxed, and let it be.

Plus, once again, it's not what you say, but how you say it.
 
I love natural hair and actually subscribe to not flat ironing MY hair often (slowly trying to go direct heat free), because I've seen what it does to my hair. I also love natural products and things natural in general. But like some of the other ladies, I agree its more than fine to (GENTLY) let people know there are alternatives, and encourage those with hair problems to shy away from heat, but I do recognize that it is a style, and another person's head, not mine. In the end of it, I would rather make suggestions like a friend, not a mother.

Natural chiming in.....

First of all I love everything hair! If you want to relax or BKT your hair, I'm going to suggest going natural but I'd never push anybody to do it. I relaxed my hair over 25 years so I know its not easy. I actually never knew how serious this natural hair stuff was till I got on hair boards. I see my friends & family with curly hair and they don't do CG routine, they put on the worst products ever, and their hair is thriving. I almost envy them and their carefree ways LOL

Now that I'm a member of LHCF I have another view on straightening and relaxers. Hey I'm sure some would find my hennaing, straightening and other tactics "not natural." But at the end of the day we really need to do the things that make US happy. When I sign off this board and NC.com nobody cares how I wear my hair.

BTW just had to add... now that's some perdy a** hair right there! Gorgeous!

permeate more diverse hair forums with their jargon, which is what most people have a problem with.
 
Yes they are more prominent on hair boards but IRL, I think most people have to deal with "Relaxed Nazis". I know I certainly do.

Yes, and they are out there in the real world. Everything is pro straight, and, once you get off the internet you can be sure that your styling choice is accepted by society. Not an excuse for nappy Nazis to question someone's styling choices, but this same pro-Nappy attitude does not exist in the 'real world'.
