I've thought about it. I may do it after I finish school. I have always enjoyed doing hair. My end goal has always been to own a few salons. I haven't decided if I will be working in them as a stylist though.

Yup. I went through my "I'm going to cosmetology school" phase. Then I got over it. Now I'm thinking about it again. :lachen:

I just want to say........... if any of you ladies pursue this career and live in the North Carolina area... PM me!

exactly my issues. my boss is cool about working around my schedule. only problem is i work in a restaurant. so i can't just say, "oh it's 4 p.m., i'm gonna clock out now," if i still have a table or have to finish up my side work. :perplexed and usually i close lunch during the week (meaning i'm there till at least 4 p.m. when the dinner shift starts coming in) so i'd have to be one of the first servers cut after the lunch rush (around 2 p.m.) and i would be missing out on money there... then spend 4 hours in class each nite. and i'd lose my Saturday shifts altogether, cuz apparently you have to spend Saturdays in class (8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) if you go part time. and that is a huge issue since you make the most money in the restaurant business on weekends.

Wow, somebody else really understands and is experiencing my plight. I feel like you're in my head. Thats exactly the way it goes for me. Only difference is that I work a 9-5. :wallbash:

I have always wanted a 'Hair and Beauty Centre'

Here in the UK there are two main types of ethnic/black hairdresser.
1. The woman that can do hair and has a hair salon but is able only to do weaves, extensions and maybe steam treatments but not much else.
2. The stylists that can do all of the above and much more for black hair but will cost the world. You have to save up to go for a treatment lol.

I want to open an affordable salon (like most of you US ladies talk about) where people can come in on a weekly/bi-weekly/monthly basis to have someone take care of their hair, not just send them out looking decent after tormenting their hair because they dont realy know what they're doing.

Kind of a mixture of the two above, high standard and good variety service mixed with good and fair prices. Where stylists will listen and wont shout at you if you dont get the full head green and pink weave which they have in their hair and think is a really nice style (just to add, this may be a nice style for some but just not for me). I want to provide a service of education about hair and encourage people to do research and investigate just like we do here on LHCF.

Thats my dream, I'll get there one day

No, not at all. I have passion for imparting information to those who really want to know and caring for my own hair but to do it as a career..nah, not at all.

Although I have just now joined, literarly, I joined today. :) I have considered going into that field after many months of lurking around invisible to your eyes. I've read many many discussions from the very first post too the last on nothing other than hair... So yea, I really enjoy this stuff and I actually like doing hair. However, I am far from actually pursuing this slight dream. Who know's what awaits me in my future...

I don't really want to go through school or work in a salon, but when I hear people say things like "My hair won't do that" or "you have a better grade of hair than I do" (my mom) It makes me want to do it for them to show them that it's possible.

I figure if I do it on the side for friends and things, I'd only be working with people that really want to take the time to know and learn. Not like in a salon where it can on in one ear and out the other. I've never even considered doing it for $$ though...

Then there's the pay cut I may have to take while I'm starting out and building a clientele. I'm just thinking through everything now. Its a lot to process. Especially since I'm an over thinker.

But... we'll see.

See, that's what I'm worried about. How are bills gonna get paid while I build up a clientele? But then I was like, I could just start out at like a JCPenney salon or something like that. :perplexed

Yeah, it has. So much so that I enrolled in cosmetology school a year ago. I already have my bs in criminal justice and a ba in English...but the urge to go back to school was too great. I took cosmetology in high school, but never did anything with it (Oooops wish I would have, could have saved 20K)

I need to PM you. That's something else that deters me...I already have 3 degrees. And everytime I think about going back to school DH is like, "who's gone pay for it??" :lachen:And I'm kinda stuck where I am, because the degrees that I have can't go into other areas (Criminal Justice and Education).

Yeah.. certainly not full time.. but definitely on the weekends. I enjoy doing it. I have always liked doing makeovers and making people look pretty.. so it fits. I couldn't imagine it paying enough to support my junkie lifestyle but it would be a cool side gig.

Grrrllll, some stylists get PAID. I'm sure my former stylists made more than me. One of them sent their kids to private school. But, I'm sure it took them a while to get to that point.

I hear ya! I grew up working in offices... then bounced back and forth between office jobs and sales jobs while in college. It wasn't until I went back to school after having my son, that I got a job working as a server. I needed a job that would give me flexibility in my schedule to go to school and work. Now that I work at a great place where I make good money, I won't know what to do when I start working for a "paycheck" again. Going home with cash in your pocket every day is addictive! Instant gratification!

I'm pretty sure I will continue serving for a little while once I finish cosmetology school and land a job in whatever salon anyway...

I've only been interested in hair care as far and trying to keep the hair on my head, healthy and strong... you can't learn that in the beauty shops today even though I was spending boo koo bucks getting my hair done every two weeks - I knew not how to care for it at home. So, :nono::nono: I do not get the urge to want to do others hair. I look at people now and want to give them the website address to research for themselves

Naw, I would get too upset and emotionally involved if my customers did not follow my haircare advice when they go home and believe me, I would be dishing out advice and regimens left right and centre!

I voted no as well. LCHF has made me scared of hair dressers actually. To be honest, in my own personal experience-- most of them are uninformed on healthy hair pratices. I've been through so many, and while my hair looked nice, no one ever told me, "Maybe the reason why it seems your hair isnt getting longer is because you are here every few days getting it blow dried and flat ironed..."

That's how I feel. If I was a hairdresser I'd be really into healthy hair and a lot of people just wanted the gelled up ponytail:ohwell: So I dont think it would be for me. But I definitely have a passion for hair!!

i think about it, but only for a moment. i don't know much about styling hair, just creating and maintaining healthy hair. wouldn't be a lucrative career if after i washed and conditioned the hair i couldn't do much else but baggy and bun it!

I think to some extent we all are hairdressers we just don't have the state license and the storefront that goes along with it. Lord knows we already have the products, equipment and tools for the set up! :lachen:

We are ehair dressers or online hair dressers or stylists or whatever you want to call it.

But to answer your question, yes, that still is in the back on my head, I would really like to put together a natural hair care salon. Or help someone put one together.:yep:

i have always been inspired to step into that line of work and i attended cos school in 2001. i love hair, but i really love makeup and skincare. i am in an esthetics program now and i am enjoying every minute of it. i am glad that i made the decision to go at this time in my life. i am more focused and goal oriented than before. one thing i like about my career choice is that hair and makeup will cross paths in the industry. i know i will have to do some type of hairstyling, but no chemical services. hair is a hobby for me. this board is a hobby for me. this board has inspired me to pursue my dreams in all aspects of my life.

Wow, we're gettin a lot more No's now. It is a lot of work!

it is a lot of hard work. and you are servicing the public. it is customer service to the tenth power! you don't get breaks, it is hard on the body, and you have to put a lot into it to be successful. good business doesn't happen for you right away. you have to build you business. you have to stay educated and informed. you have to constantly invest in yourself and your business. you don't get sick days, because then you are losing out on your money. you have to keep up with your clients and always be on the hunt for new ones. you have to self promote yourself daily. you can't just do hair and then go home.

you have to be very passionate about servicing the public. they will make you or break you. i have chosen a career in the beauty industry because i love people and i am not a person that likes to be behind a desk. i love making others feel good inside and out. i love for my hard work to be displayed physically, not just on a piece of paper. the first time i got to work on a guest, it felt so good. she was so pleased with my work and i put a lot of love into the services that i provided for her.

Yep. I'll be interviewing at a couple of salons this week.:drunk: I'm an aspiring musician, but there's nothing wrong with having a back up. I have done hair in the past and I miss the industry. I got sidetracked by accepting a job that was offered to me by one of my clients. It was only supposed to be part-time, but it quickly turned into full-time. I got seduced by the money that job offered, benefits, 401k etc.:lachen: Ironically, I still did her hair.

But yeah. I miss the hair shows (PJ heaven) and everything else that goes with it. Working in an office just doesn't do it for me anymore. :nono:

yeah ive kinda sorta been inspired to open a salon in manhattan---one where i hired stylist who truly knew about healthy hair care and made sure the customer is #1

and since real estate has recently dropped--then it would be wise to open sooner than ltr--but i am kinda spreading myself thin business wise as it is--but its def something that can be in the works----i would want the salon to be big--as in double level and around midtown--i would need to learn spanish better and a couple other languages since i would want an intl clientele base--etc etc etc

we"ll see...
