I am waiting for SourhernTease wet results to see the curls ...cuz if my hair styling is cut in half approx and detangling a breeze AND it doesnt kill me curls since its not permanent Id be a happy camper... why?? NO MORE SINGLE STRAND KNOTS. I encouter them a lot where my hair is more kinky.

IVE NEVER BEEN ANXIOUS FOR SOMEONE TO WASH THEIR HAIR AND POST RESULTS ..lLIKE THIS :s

crazydaze, the more you post the better i feel.

i can use my own stuff, as long as it is "color safe"? my hair won't be bone straight?

i love it. i can start saving now and get it around thanksgiving. LOL

question: if it lasts 3-4 months, why have you had it done so many times this year?

It lasts 2 to 4 months - 2 months on natural, 4 on relaxed - those are averages. I had it done March 08, October 08 (7 months later) and then again in March 09. so 2 to 3 times for the year. Pple who have tons of money and hate having ANY curl can do it as much as once a month, but i prefer my schedule - lol.

Crazydaze911,

I had a horrible experience with that Bodipher and Naturalaxer as well. In fact, I was going to have the BKT done in Oct. 2007 by Denise Kingsley in Denver, CO on vacation but I chickened out because of my previous experiences. I was completely 3c/b/4a natural at the time. I am now re-tex-laxed-ish..lol and I'd like to transition, keep my curls BUT be able to wear my NATURAL hair straight without all the drama :rolleyes:(I HATE being a slave to the weather channel). Last year, I only relaxed twice so I wouldn't do the BKT more than 3 times a year for sure. The product has been out for 2 years and I haven't heard anything horrible about it yet (other than chemicals / fumes) and I KNOW females would light up threads all over the world posting horrible results if they existed after more than 2 years! I am going to give it a go. I ordered my flatiron, some Eluence Clarifying Shampoo & Moisturizing Conditioner and some Global Keratin 2%. My flatiron is here today! When I get the Global Keratin it's on!! :lachen:

Good luck! but i really think you should to a professional for the FIRST TIME - just to SEE it done right. then you can be adventurous and do it yourself.

How come you can't use Joico?

The one i like - the gold colored bottle - has the sodium chloride in it. sodium chloride is salt. someone on this board did a thread about salt on hair - adding it to ur conditioner etc, and getting good results. professionals know this, so they add it to their stuff to get your hair 'silky', but salts can be harsh, and they especially take EVERYTHING off ur hair - just like a salt scrub will deeply clean ur face or body. with the BKT you DONT want to strip the treatment off, so salt is not good in this case.
if you ever noticed 'beach hair' is wavy and cute but the salt later has ur hair DRY and in needed of conditioning. salt is one of those 'controversial' ingredients on which pple debate if its good for your hair in the long run. I dont know the answer to that, but i know its not good for the BKT - lol

I'd be very careful with this unless you are trying to alter your curl pattern. I'd be way too scared to risk losing my natural hair texture.

Crazydaze you said your hair went from a 3c to a 3a does your hair revert back to your natural texture or no?

Yup, - my natural texture of a MESS - lol. 2 years of natural hair, 1 year of relaxed, with underprocessed and overprocessed pieces in between - lol. I think we need a COMPLETELY natural person to chime in here, but all the naturals that have had it done seem to KEEP doing it, so they cant show us reversion pics. It was starting to wear off in my avatar pic - dont know if you can see the difference between that pic and the 'first wash' BKT pics i posted earlier.....

yeah that is what is making me hesitant. Most of the naturals that I see doing it have only had it in for like 6 days, or a week or so and I haven't seen any true 'my hair went right back to how it was without any curl elongation after xx months/weeks' pictures or stories, so I'm going to wait a bit on this. I'm keeping my eye on this treatment though, it sounds really cool. My best friend gets a similar version since she lives in Japan, I believe its the Japanese thermal treatment? (it sounds very similar to this in terms of process, so it might be this as well), and her hair is always nice and healthy and has grown a lot since she's moved there, she's been egging me on to try it, but she prefers her hair stick straight and I like my kink :perplexed I need more reassurances that the hair will bounce completely back, all that flatironing is scary:perplexed

Yeah I believe i'm going to go ahead and take the plunge in June. I've been waiting over a year to hear some horror stories about this process. So far the only constraints are not using shampoos and conditioners with sulfates or or sodium chloride in them. With my regimen consisting of 90% natural products/ingredients, im good on that. It seems like the only worrisome aspect of the procedure is the formaldehyde or its other forms. I really don't want to hear 5 years down the line that folks are having cancer of the brainstem or something. According to the research that folks have done, in order for the treatment to be effective, it has to have some formaldehyde in it and even those that are touted as being formaldehyde free have trace amount of it or another of its forms in them. buuuuuuuuuuut people have even gone so far as to research the mortality and cancer rates of folks who are constantly around formaldehyde (ie morticians, medical students, etc) and there's no big difference between them and the general population so i feel pretty safe with trying it at least once. and with my penchant for dyeing my hair and then having to cut it all off due to breakage 6 months later, this might be my life saver.

oh yeah, im waiting too see a wash and go on a natural. ive been wng'ing since i've been 15, i cant let them go. i love my curlies. i figure by june some more naturals will have had it for a couple of months and I can see what they look like and how it "wears off".

I'm looking at doing this to keep my hair from reverting this summer. Did anyone get good results from the Liquid Keratin Product that's found at Ulta?

see below...

Crazydaze and all the other ladies thank you for your input!
I'm a bit bored with my hair right now, and I'm doing my research on trying BKT or something else that will give me the versatility of straight/kinky hair whenever I feel like it.
Summer is almost here and I will be putting my hot combs away as I do every summer.
So, as soon as I figure out what new adventure I'm going to take my natural hair on I'll be posting about it here and on KMH!

http://www.unsprung.net/gallery_new.html (her are are some results showing weeks later after having BKT done)

If its the normal japanese straightening or thermal reconditioning - DONT DO IT - it is permanent and you have to retouch the roots AND it costs more than the BKT

Great pics on that site - which reminded me - w/e shape ur hair was in BEFORE BKT, it will go back to - so if it was unhealthy before, it will go back. thats why some pple dont let it wear off, b/c they know their hair is unhealthy and dont want to cut their hair until they can see real growth. see page 5 in the Brazilian section of that link.

thanks PS, that link was extra helpful. Yeah I think im going to go ahead and get mine done in June.

Thank you HotHair! What do you do to get your hair straight?

I flatironed on VERY low heat with my FHI and Mane N Tail Heat Protectant, (this is after airdrying my hair in a ponytail, I only had to swipe once. I think a straightening pro like you won't have any problems maintaining this for up to 2 weeks.

My twistouts also come out like I did them on relaxed hair even though when I start twisting on damp hair, my hair looks nappy as usual. I haven't tried rollersetting yet (not very good at it) but I suspect it may come out really smooth too:yep:

Thank you HH! I checked out your fotki and your hair came out really pretty and straight!:yep:

:eh:they're saying is permanent?
not too sure, but i am seeing that the "formaldehyde-free" formulas just seem to have a derivative of it, kinda like lye vs. no lye. I'm interested in this process, but I think I will wait a little longer for more info and long term effects to be seen.

THANK YOU KURLEE! That article made me:burning: I would be devastated if I were mislead into putting relaxer-like, permanent, straightening chemicals on my hair!
lol NP. I been looking into this process too. That fire head is :lachen:

So I read the link, and I don't know. I don't buy it. Not all hairstylists know what they're talking about. No one here complained of straw dryness with the bk and that was in her article. I pm'd foxylisa and crazydaze and they've done it for a year or more and love it. Plus she's talking about a specific brand so I started researching elsewhere. The thing about reporters is they can twist an article anyway they like. She never completely states that it breaks the bonds. Nothing can sort of break bonds. Either they do or they don't. So I thought that was kinda funny so I went to reputable places like the Chicago Tribune and New York Times (pulitzer winners who have a ridiculous research team. I had to research them for an article for my thesis) who have no outside agenda (looked up naturally curly articles by this lady and it seems she is adamant about natural products which is cool but could she be biased). I also found these:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/19/fashion/19skin1.html
Technically, it is neither a relaxer nor a straightener, both of which use caustic chemicals to change the texture of the hair. The Japanese straightening method, also known as thermal conditioning, has fallen out of favor because many users reported extensive damage, particularly when the process was repeated. The Brazilian is also different because it can be used on most hair types, even the previously color treated, without causing harm, proponents say.

In salon today the article states (when it says formalin it's talking about formaldehyde and uses the word earlier) http://www.salontoday.com/ArticleLanding/tabid/130/Default.aspx?tid=1&ContentID=237839:

Like the second step of a perm process, keratin treatments with formalin don’t break bonds in the hair, but do “fix” the keratin in place, semi-permanently.

----------------------
For ex, semi permanent hair color only temporarily alters the hair. Here's another one from the chicago Tribune another independent no agenda based thing.....

http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/la-ig-beauty17-2008aug17,0,6217678.story

temporarily altering the structure of the hair. "The straightening occurs from the heating process combined with the formaldehyde, causing it to appear straighter," McAndrews says.

https://hairshow.us/article_print.php?art=34
'Brazilian' Keratin Straighteners Pros: Does not chemically alter the bonds inside the hair. Provides great frizz control and silky shiny, straight hair
-------------

That's independent reputable papers. The naturally curly team (she posts there, hairstylist with those claims that were mentioned in another post in this thread) seems anti chems, so I'm thinking that's why her stance was so harsh. Heck I even went there to look up cones and everyone was ballistic over there about not using them. I think cones can be used in moderation. So anyways I think that's why she didn't take a definitive stance about them definitely breaking bonds because she could get sued for making allegations. So she just leaned towards it. I will def do more research, though.

Pink skates I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but I just saw a youtube video on the Global keratin's BKT process and they mentioned that they had a formula that did not remove the curl from the hair I don't know if that helps, but I hope so. I'll try to post the link!!
