Has Anyone with Long Hair (MBL +) had BKT done?

bumping for you. im only bsl - 28 months transitioning. Im a big BKT advocate and have posted in probably ALL of the BKT threads - lol.
I think there will come a time when i am WSL where i wont need it anymore b/c the weight of my hair on my curls will make it more manageable with the right products, but UNTIL THEN, i plan to use it to reach my goals. I lose alot less hair with it being manageable and protected. I also dont have hand-in-hair disease as much when i choose to keep it straight.
Seeing as ur a natural who likes to straighten often, i think this would be really good for you and that little extra protection for your natural hair - it will straighten alot faster and with less heat.

I actually meant to type (BSL +) but I could not change it after I submitted. Once I saw your avatar, I remembered your thread on BKT.
What do you do when you want some curls in your hair after having BKT done? Can you rollerset or use a curling iron to get some curls?
Thanks for your thoughts!

Great question.

I am thinking about this option for next winter when WNGs won't work. (I cowash too much in the summertime.) Hopefully by then I will be BSL :drunk:

Here is my problem. It sounds like you have to use certain Shampoo/conditioners. I am not ready to give up my products ( honey, henna, homemade condishes) just yet.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm................

I'm curious because I have yet to see someone who has had it done with some pretty curls. If I had it done, I know 2 weeks later I would be bored with my stick straight hair and would want some curls....so what do you do then?

That's a concern too! A friend of a friend had it done recently and she's mad that she had to buy a certain brand of shampoo and conditioner from the salon afterwards. She has spent a small fortune:spinning:

I think this is where I draw the line. It took me soooo long to find the gentle natural stuff that WORKS - that I won't go back.

It is sort of like CHI - back in the day - they sold it as - you must use all the products to have the look you want/ paid loads for..:look::look:

I think I want to wait for this treat ment to be around for about 5 more years.... see what happens. Until then - I will just keep the coconuts and lime handy :lachen:

I completely agree with you 200% Looking back on natural relaxers, Rio, and all that jazz, we can see what big mistakes they were. But I feel like this is just too new.

I don't buy the hype that the only downside is the hefty price. Right now it seems too good to be true and I will believe that until it has a little more history and chemical testing under its belt.

I am a little passed bsl and I have done the BKT's for a little over a year and absolutely loved it!! My hair was never bone straight because of the treatment....I guess it depends on your hair texture. The treatment simply loosened up my curl pattern so I still was able to wear my hair w/ some curls (semi beach wave hair look). My last treatment was last summer. The best part about it for me was it cut styling time in half and stopped all my breakage.....and it grew so much faster:)

I agree with everything you said, especially the bolded.

If it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

You're very right to exercise caution especially whenever trying out new chemical products. I know before the boards (for me) I had heard of BKT. I have recently learned there are members of this board that have been doing it for years. This process or treatment isn't new has been around several years and with some many people and companies going green, many are working to make there chemical products safer and safer.

By no means am I saying it is safe, but not to long ago some of us were relaxing ever 4-6 weeks, and had not clue what the chemical compound of relaxers were, or that no one regulates them.

Thank you for sharing! Your hair is very pretty.:yep:
I'm glad you were able to keep your curl pattern.

ETA: Thanks for your input ladies!

Yes, you can rollerset - it will just dry in 1/2 hour under the dryer instead of a full hour - and you will have curls. i put some airdry pics in my thread, i will repost here thats just AIRDRYING - its like my hair went from 3c/4a to a 3a or smthg. if you do a braid out, it should come out even better.

P.S. my ends look weird cuz thats old relaxed hair, as i am transitioning

This is my one CON - i miss my joico! and CERTAIN aveda products! oh well, i'll get over it - lol. YOU CAN - however - use homemade stuff sure - just nothing with sodium chloride (natural name sea salt or just salt). you DO NOT have to buy the condish they tell u - YEAH RIGHT. Any shampoo and condish that is sodium chloride free (usually will say 'COLOR SAFE' on the bottle) works JUST FINE.

Ahhhhhh....thank you Crazydaze! That's what I wanted to see. Some Curls and Waves post BKT treatment:yep:
I know I heat straighten my hair a lot. But on those days that I wake up and say I'm showing off my kinks today...then I need and expect my natural kinky hair to be there waiting for me!

i agree - i cannot see this as any worse than a relaxer - speaking as a person who lost clumps of hair with 'african wonders NATURALAXER', i do my research NOW. I've done it 3x this year with no ill effects - the stylist has to deal with the fumes more than the client. i had the formaldehyde free one which still has chemicals, but so do most soaps and toothpaste. For me, i did have to try it at least ONCE, and then i did it again b/c i wanted a true length check and for a blow out to last more than a week. It depends on the person, i guess. We should be cautious and worry about things - its easy for me to say its ok cuz i took the plunge already, but for someone new its a big step. I wouldnt do it more than 2 or 3x a year though - who wants WL beautiful hair with a possible asthma or other problem later (if the medical hype/caution is founded).

crazydaze, the more you post the better i feel.

i can use my own stuff, as long as it is "color safe"? my hair won't be bone straight?

i love it. i can start saving now and get it around thanksgiving. LOL

question: if it lasts 3-4 months, why have you had it done so many times this year?

Pinkskates carries some weight around here!!!! :yep::yep:

She does! Whenever I see her posts, I listen :yep: I'm still skeptical but she has made me a little more interested.

Who knows, I'll probably be starting another "I love BKT" thread next month...:lachen:

Crazydaze911,

I had a horrible experience with that Bodipher and Naturalaxer as well. In fact, I was going to have the BKT done in Oct. 2007 by Denise Kingsley in Denver, CO on vacation but I chickened out because of my previous experiences. I was completely 3c/b/4a natural at the time. I am now re-tex-laxed-ish..lol and I'd like to transition, keep my curls BUT be able to wear my NATURAL hair straight without all the drama :rolleyes:(I HATE being a slave to the weather channel). Last year, I only relaxed twice so I wouldn't do the BKT more than 3 times a year for sure. The product has been out for 2 years and I haven't heard anything horrible about it yet (other than chemicals / fumes) and I KNOW females would light up threads all over the world posting horrible results if they existed after more than 2 years! I am going to give it a go. I ordered my flatiron, some Eluence Clarifying Shampoo & Moisturizing Conditioner and some Global Keratin 2%. My flatiron is here today! When I get the Global Keratin it's on!! :lachen:

How come you can't use Joico?

I'd be very careful with this unless you are trying to alter your curl pattern. I'd be way too scared to risk losing my natural hair texture.

Crazydaze you said your hair went from a 3c to a 3a does your hair revert back to your natural texture or no?

So I wonder - I use Castile soap, I make my own condish, etc.....

We will - I wonder mhow many BTK Vets there are out there...

I have another question.

So - How do you know when your hair is "going Back" to the Uncombable phase?

How do you know when it is worn off?

 I don't have long hair but I am 4ab natural with this treatment. I haven't lost much of my texture, my hair just straightens a LOT easier and stays that way for a lot longer, without styling you wouldn't know I had any sort of process done. The only bit of my hair that stays straight without styling are leftover bits of my texlax (if you're relaxed your hair will dry straight). Also the products you shouldn't use are mostly shampoos and conditioners with sodium chloride (as they strip the treatment off faster) I'm still using my Aveda DR treatment, Aussie, Joico with no problems HTH.

Thank you HotHair! What do you do to get your hair straight?

Ditto. I no longer have BSL hair (cut it to above APL) but I am 4a (transitioning) and I am having the same results: no real loss of texture, faster flat iron time and it has lasted 6 full days so far. I was able to air dry with no afro for the first time in ages. My relaxed ends are more prominent but will be cut off eventually.

I am using WEN Fig to wash/condition.
