I used to get layers years ago and loved them. They made my hair look thick, and upkeeping them wasnt a pain.

BUT recently, I got layers again, and now I regret it SO MUCH. I dont hate them but...Ugh, I dont like them! Not because they were cut badly, but I happened to have gotten bored of my hair one day and asked for layers...but I miss my blunt cut hair and the dimension and options it gave me for styling that layers have now taken away...:nono: I'm desperately trying to grow them out, now.

I'm a natural so, layers. Otherwise I'd look like triangle-head. I like longer layers as my hair grows, so my face is framed.

Good point. In addition to the natural shape one's hair naturally grows (triangle, circle, straight down, v-shaped, etc.) I could guess that maybe that the shape of one's face may even make a difference in how layered vs. blunt styles appear too? Who knows.

Layers give the illusion of fullness, but when you put your hair up in a pony tail those ends are going to look mighty thin. I stick with letting it grow how it will, but refuse to get layers put in. Every time I have, I've regretted it.

I was just reading this on some stylist site yesterday.

Layers are good for volume if FINE hair is above the shoulder.

Blunt is best for the appearance of volume if FINE hair is SL or longer.

Good information. I will definitely refrain from getting layers.

Right, after a certain point if you cut your hair in layers the longest strands are going to be mighty lonely down there.

I think natural layers or a a combo of layered front and whichever (natural or blunt) back would work.

i have fine hair and it is somewhat layered and it looks fuller until u get to the bottom. i only had it cut once and i had no choice but to have it layered since it was so damaged and i didnt want to lose all my length. i am growin em out and plan on cuttin once i hit bsl i think.

Basically!

It took forever for my layers to grow out. It looked full until you got to the bottom then you could see through the ends. Man, that bothered me.

which one gives the appearance of thicker hair?

As long as you have long layers you should be fine. I have blunt cut but angled around the face. So the back looks full but I still get a little volume around my face. As previously stated the key is too make sure you don't have alot of layers. An example would be the shortest layer is maybe 1.-2.5" shorter than your overall length. But I find that if the difference is drastic and its all over layers that it can give your hair a thin look.

Well, I have fine hair, and I just got my hair cut a lot shorter with tons of layers and it definitely looks fuller than my previous blunt cut.

It really does vary! I LOVE long layers, and because my face is oval I need layers around my face. I am however thinking about cutting my length about 3 or 4 inches because I think it will look better. Then let it grow back to bsl.

Layers add volume straight or curly. Fine or thin hair that is all one length looks sparse most of the time.

Not when you're relaxed sweetie. So sorry, I have to disagree with you on this one. I have worn my hair both layered and cut bluntly and I had far better results with the blunt cut which made my hair look thicker.

ETA: The layered look may be okay on short cuts but not longer relaxed hair like BSL and longer in my opinion.

the most impt thing is someone who can cut - but definately layers.

I think when you have fine hair there is a tendency to feel disheartended so a good cut will instantly "perk" up your hair, especially with well cut layers which help give the "illusion" of volume.

Just get a great stylist.

WOW! I didnt expect the split down the middle on the poles. Well I guess to each her own.........I voted blunt. I dont have the volume yet so layers are a no no for me. But whatever works for, go for it.

I guess I broke the 50/50 split with my vote for blunt ends. I've had both when I was relaxed, but blunt ends made my hair look much thicker, and are easier to maintain. My layers grew out way too fast, had to keep getting them re-cut.
