I didn't know you could cook with it. I have the NOW kind from the health food store. It's virgin coconut oil. I really like it.

I usually combine my coconut with avocado oil ( ayrudvedic - Candy_C's) and I am falling in love.... I can't get enough!!!

I used it last night....
I will be preepooing tonight!!!

Could this be use before applying Miss Jessie Curl Pudding? My hair is Type 4A/B more on the B side.

are you ladies using it alone or to seal with b/c i've been trying to deal with some very dry ends lately by baggying with my motions moisturizer...but i may try this since it seems to be so good...

I use it primarily alone... After a shampoo or CW. So, water is my moisterizer  and the Coconut oil I use to seal it in.

I bought the same brand at Vitamin Shoppe. I love the way it makes my hair feel after I seal. When I wear my hair in twists its still moisturized so I don't have to spray it with moisturizer all the time.

I use this one.

It says fairly liquid in my bathroom. I put it in an old Doo Gro applicator bottle so I can use only a little at a time.

I have this one too, got it from my local health food store. I use it to pre-poo overnite and I mix it with jojoba oil to seal in my moisturizer daily. This stuff is the truth!

Yes this is the one I use too!
It is not only great for your hair but also awsome as a food. It's a whole food with excellent nutrients in it. I use it raw with other food I eat. Cooking it will destroy everything so I don't cook it ever.

i have spectrum coconut oil and i love it. it makes my hair shine and soft. but right now im using hairveda's cocasta oil. i was thinking of mixing a little coconut oil in it.
do you think i should? or would that mess the cocasta oil up?

I don't know anything about cocasta oil.

Unrefined coconut oil is one of those nearly perfect products. I use it on my hair, my face, my body, I use it internally. It can do no wrong.

Coconut oil is so good for you! What I also do is shower and apply coconut or olive oil on overnight and then rinse in the morning. It softens the skin and makes it glow. Apricot oil is good on the face!

With using coconut oil as a pre-poo, or with deep conditioning, are you ladies mixing it with regular conditioner? Do you have to melt it first? Does it need to be kept in the fridge? Is it on to use on relaxed hair?

Thanks Ladies!!

I use it alone - as a hot oil treatment.... and I mix it in all my condishes...

Do you have to melt it first? sometimes - yes sometimes no... it melts easily
Does it need to be kept in the fridge? Nope

Is it on to use on relaxed hair? - I am natural - But when I flat ironed - I never saw anything as Fabulous as Coconut oil on Straight hair.... it was an OMG moment for me.

BTW - LOVE  your hair!

If you loooooove coconut oil, do try Vatika oil! It's ayurvedic herbs and essential oils in a coconut oil base. It's fantastic!

Thank you! Going to Whole Foods to get some...will let you know how it goes.

I just bought coconut oil the other day the-Emerald Kind from GNC and I was in t Wal-Mart last night and walked in the "vitamin" aisle and saw a jar of coconut oil for $9 and I wonder if that kind is "good" I didn't really read it b/c it was late nadI needed to go home but i was definitely shocked. It's surprising how much stuff there is out there for all kinds of uses and to know that I have gone 23 years without coming across it and noticing makes me open my eyes wider b/c I could be living better off, just like when I realized there was an actual "credit score" and that the world was actually bigger than what I saw everyday....I feel so inpsired so enligthened....!! Ahhh....I'm off to find other uses for that great Coconut oil b/c I didn't know it moisturized- I thought oils didn't moisturize.....hmm....I know what I will be trying on MY lunch break :)

I use the coconut oil from Walmart in the vitamin section - I have been using on my hair as well as my little ones...I am using it as a prepoo and it is great - never would I have ever thought about putting "oils" in my fine hair as I was concerned about it "weighing it down" but it has made it stronger - definitely more shiny...(I think)

Yes, it is!! I love Vatika! And I LOVE Brahmi Oil, which contains coconut oil as well...

Bindi Brahmi Hair Oil - Tradtional Ayurvedic Formulation for Hair Care

Here: Brahmi Oil

A specially formulated Ayurvedic Herbal Tonic to help nourish hair roots and prevent skin diseases. It has a very cooling and calming effect on the brain. It also helps arrest loss of hair and dandruff leaving your hair soft, healthy and clean. Ingredients

Directions To Use :
Massage a small amount into your hair and scalp two or three times a week. For dry hair with split ends, take some warm oil and rub it into the ends of the hair and leave on overnight. Wash in the morning with a low pH balanced shampoo.

Ancient Traditional Indian Head Massage
Warm some of the oil in the palm of your hands and gently rub it into the crown of your head. Using your palms and fingertips rub some more oil into your hair, going from the sides and back of your head up to the crown.

Then use your fingertips and thumbs press on the scalp in a downward and forward manner creating heat through friction by using small, rhythmic movements over one spot. Make sure to work your way over the entire head, again coming up from the sides and back.

Next, place the heels of your hands over your temples and while keeping one hand still vigorously move the other hand up and down on the same spot. Repeat this step using the other hand as well and then do the same at the front and back of your head.

Run your fingertips through your hair at the sides of your head and at the same time close your fingers and gently pull. Then, move your hands from side to side.

Now gently rub the areas in front and above of your ears, using a circular motion.

Putting your hands on your temples with your fingers pointing upwards then repeatedly squeeze for five seconds and release. Repeat this while squeezing the area above your ears.

The muscles on either side of your neck at the bottom of your skull are massaged next, by quickly rubbing them up and down with your fingertips. Then, till your head back and rest it on your thumbs, for fifteen seconds.

Finally, squeeze and relax your neck muscles, gently pulling them in a circular motion and go down and across to the tips of your shoulders. Use the right hand for the right side of your neck and the left for the left side.

It is important to remember to lightly pass your fingers through your hair to relax you head.

Notes :

Oil Brahmi Oil: was traditionally used in India for many centuries to:
• balance the right and left hemispheres of the brain
• improve concentration
• promote mental equilibrium
• deepen meditation
• Traditional hair oil

It was also traditionally known to counteract:
• hair loss
• insomnia
• dry hair
• nervousness
• stress
• anxiety
• fear
• dandruff

Recipe :

Hair needs daily grooming, care and attention in order to stay healthy and strong. Nourishing care needs to start from the root of the hair shaft, and we need to use a nourishing food like coconut oil.

The best time to massage oil into the scalp is before a bath in the morning, when it gently awakens the nerves; or in the evening, when it helps to remove the stress of the day and promotes a good nights sleep.

Some of the benefits of an oil massage are:
- Improves hair condition, makes it glossy and healthy.
- Increases body heat, improves circulation.
- Improves quality of hair and clears it from disorders like dandruff, thinning, split ends and dry, damaged hair.

When oil is applied to the head, it gets absorbed into the scalp through the roots. This nourishes, strengthens and lubricates hair roots and the scalp, preventing hair loss and premature graying. It improves circulation to the head, relaxing the muscles and the nerve fibers. This refreshes the mind and body, relieves tension and fatigue, and improves the complexion.
Here is a recommendation for various types of hair -

Dry hair: As many as three times a week. It is important to brush the hair before an oil massage, as it stimulates the scalp and improves the condition of the hair.

Greasy hair: Only once a week. Do not massage vigorously - gently rotate and lift the scalp a little. After shampoo, rinsing has to be thorough, and instead of a conditioner, dilute lemon rinse may be used.

Dandruff conditions: People with dandruff can have an oil massage thrice a week. It exfoliates, and rids the scalp of waste.

Blonde and chemically-treated hair: When you use warmed oil you are nourishing your hair. So, chemically-treated hair also definitely benefits. It improves the quality of the hair.

I have fine hair too - and it (CO) has been nothing short of a miracle.

I think it's definitely more shiny!

I have to say thank you to the ladies that rave about unrefined coconut oil! My inquiring mind REALLY wanted to try it after I read Irresistible's comments about the stuff.

I LOVE that stuff! I waited for 6 wks before posting this message to see if what I was feeling was true. I was a little thrown off by the price (like $9 at whole foods); I was thinking that's a bit much for some kitchen oil! :look: But anyway, it's some good stuff.

Question for the ladies that use it... does it soften your texture? I used it as a pre-poo last night (kind of like hot oil treatment) then shampooed my hair as usual, DC with my ORS pack, and prepped for flat ironing. My hair was so moisterized and my new growth (8 months worth) was super soft!

it makes my hair soft and yummy and my hair is about 6-8 inches natural with relaxed ends.

Hello Ladies,

I buy my coconut oil from the African Grocer does anyone know if it's refined or virgin. It says pure African Coconut Oil on the label, and it looks like it was just scooped from the coconut. But, I still get the same great benefits, while transitioning. It softens, makes it more manageble, gives great gloss, and it straightens it so well that I decided to hold off on purchasing the Mizani Thermasmooth System at $85 a whop. So, yippie to my $4 bottle of coconut oil.

I use it with my conditioner, deep cond w/ steam, oil rinse with red palm oil mix (also purchased at African Grocer), and I put on after my leave in con. Believe it or not it still lasted a good two months.

i love coconut oil. but i havent used mine in a while. i have been using vatika oil(which is coconut oil based) as a pre poo, oil rinse and moisturizer, and i have been using vatika frosting(coconut oil based) as a sealant at night as well. i have to get back to mixing coconut oil in my deep conditioners because i know my hair will be soooooooo soft when i do. i've just been substituting with castor oil because i like the way it thickens my hair.

I love coconut oil too and I get mine from a whole foods store here in the Bahamas. It smells divine and feels awesome on my fine strands, makes it feel really soft and silky. I was adding it to my ayurveda co-washes but now I think it's too precious to be used that way. I think Ima start using it on my skin now too:yep:.

I do everyday and my skin is ooohhhh so soft. It shines too. Sometimes I try wiping off excess oil I see and when I touch that area...no oil, just shine! It's said to help prevent wrinkles so I ALWAYS use it around my eyes and mouth.
