Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

I have highlights too... the bleached kind, not just colored. I read so many horror stories and I was sooooo scared. People saying that they had breakage where the highlights were. But, I emailed Sistaslick, who has great color care articles, and asked her what is the hair being stripped of, when its dyed or highlighted, that causes breakage. She said that the hair is being stripped of protein. So, I added the 2 min Keratin Reconstructor, which is light enough for weekly use, to my regimen. Also, I do harsh protein treatments every 6 wks. And my highlighted hair is perfectly fine. I'm actually getting a touch up in February. Now I was having a little trouble with my unhighlighted hair but, I nipped that problem in the bud with more moisture...

Hope the Helps:)

Kyna, thanks for htis post.. It's useful. My question is when you get your highlights redone, are they careful not to overlap and get the roots only? I'm so scared to get it done and then need a touchup and they overlap, esp at the demarcation line. When I first got my hair highlighted I had no idea about thsi board or protein treatments, etc... so my hair fell out bad...

**ooh me*** **raises hand***

I'm at work right now but I'll come back tonight and write some more  (if others haven't already said everything yet). :look:

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

There are a few people on here who say Clairol Luminize is the safest way to color... Many have use it with AMAZING results.... if i could get highlights with it I would....lol...

Oh really!!

Thanks for confirming...I'm going to get a bottle/box today!!

I have contacted a few people and they said til this date they haven't had any damage. I was just still nervous about it all though. I was told that the sun will lighten it, too :yep:

You probably could get highlights by pulling it through a cap, don't you think?

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

I've never done it. I'm always so scared to color my hair, everytime I want highlights I just get a couple of color tracks sewn in:lachen:

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

Best advice I can give you is to go to a professional salon. If it costs you $200 and up, so be it. Color is very expensive. Not only do you have to worry about the care of your hair, but you have to make sure they look good too. Please don't do ugly chunky streaks.

Keep in mind that Lumanize is designed to only lift one level at a time.

Yeah, I know. That's perfectly fine with me, just as long as I get rid of this black. My hair is naturally JET black and will not budge with color, so I'll be patient and see how this stuff works out.

I saw a recent comment that you were talking about getting color for spring, are you still contemplating this?? and what is your opinion of the luminize?

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

@ bravenewgirl87: Aww. I like my ghetto chunky streaks. I think you should get whatever makes you happy/suites your style. Although, I do want to eventually get a color similar to the last pic when my hair gets longer...hopefully shoulder length by Dec '09!

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

I have had color without breakage two thoughts 1professional. 2 deep conditioning

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

I think most of this has been said already, but the bolded definitely bears repeating for your hair's sake. I've had highlights for going on 3 years. I started when my hair was a little below shoulder and now I am less than an inch from BSL.

I started at a light brown and worked my way up to blonde. As you get your touch ups, the color tends to get lighter and lighter each time (unless they run a toner through it to tone it back down). Usually after my touch up I am blindingly blonde, then the color fades until I get touched up again.

Here's what I do:

  1. Get Aveda highlights done in a salon 3 - 4x a year max. My hd told me that they are gentler, and I must say I have had minimal breakage. All of the other dyes I have used have eventually broken my hair. GET THEM DONE BY A PRO!!!
  2. Stretch my relaxers. I'm down to 4x a year but starting in 2009 I'm reducing to 3x a year. I had mad breakage when I was relaxing and highlighting every 8 weeks each. It was just too many chemicals for my hair to handle.
  3. Reduce heat dramatically. Basically, I do not use direct heat unless I go to the salon, which is about 8x a year (this year will be 6x). However, I did just buy a FHI so I plan to flat iron once a month, especially since I'll be stretching so long. I use Chi silk infusion any time I use heat - either my overhead dryer or direct heat.
  4. Keep the hair moist. This is a MUST. Not as in wet all the time, but soft and moisturizied. I cowash 2 - 4x a week with Redken All Soft, slather on a full strength conditioner like Redken Butter Treat and bun my hair up. If I feel like it I'll do a wet set, wear it down one day and then loosely pin up the curls. :yep:
  5. Use protein, but don't overdo it (unless your hair thrives with protein - mine doesn't). I may do a heavy duty protein treatment every 2 to 3 weeks. Other than that, I mix a protein conditioner with a moisturizing leave in and some water and spray it on my line of demarcation at night, so I have a light protein treatment. Or I'll put some on my ends before bunning it up.
HTH!!!

ITA with everything you said. Please don't try to be a kitchen beautician and do your own color:nono:, I've seen too many tragedies. I hate having to pay so much for color but once it's done I'm in love all over again!

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

Depends on what you want. Look up aveda salons in your area and see if they have websites. If they do, you should be able to see a ball park figure of what it might set you back. Make sure you find out if that price includes styling, I am not sure if they price separately for that but some salons do. Hopefully Butterfly will be able to tell you. Good luck and post some pics if you go through with it.

Alright, deep breath....

I priced highlights at a concept salon and it would be in the neighborhood of $115 including styling.

HOWEVER, I go to a Dillard's salon (which uses only Aveda products) and it is half of that cost. I think $60 or $65. If you have a Dillard's in your area, try there first. :yep:

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

Well there are no Dillards for about 3 or 4 states from here.... but i found some salons that only use Aveda and Mizani... I need to some research this extensively cause 115 really is NOT in my budget

I know Marbel use it and her hair and color is stunning!
+ she is relaxed too i think.

Please post updates if you go ahead and do it. I think I will do it this summer.

Yeah, I am planning another color change this spring. I want to be a little more daring but that will depend on my confidence with the condition of my hair.

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

I've been wearing highlights and a relaxer for six years straight, and my hair hasn't experienced any undue breakage. I got mine professionally done every time, and the key is to keep your heat use to a minimum, and keep the hair MOISTURIZED!

I'm giving up the streaks this year because I want to grow my hair out, but I'll likely put them back in either next year or the year after. Good luck!

That red is HOT! My hd said mid last year that red was the hottest color. She gave me like 3 streaks but they didn't stay so she didn't charge me any extra. She also said red fades the fastest. I might try to add some red with the blonde again though for the summer. :yep:

I love red but you are right, it does fade. I need to run this pic by a colorist and see what shade they would transition it too. I saw this on the Lanza website and instantly fell in love.

Buttafly your streaks look very pretty, and your hair looks healthy as well. I've thought about getting reddish brown streaks but I'm scared of breakage, that's why I've been keeping it jet black. Anyhow, just wanted to compliment your beautiful hair. :)

Re: There HAS to be someone on this site that maintained highlights without going bal

 hey everybody newbie here, I have highlights and a relaxer, I've only had it for a week but I've seen some breakage. I used some 2 min keratin and i'm dcing with honeysuckle rose(I've been lurking for a minute ). hopefully i'll see less breakage in the coming week.

Welcome Lboogie1! I hope you see improvements very soon. Have you thought about trying a hardcore protein like ApHogee or Nexxus Emergencee?

I'm a little scared to try the hardcore treatment right now lol, I'm going to see how well the 2 min keratin works for now and how my hair reacts to it. I'm new to using protein

How pretty! That color is about the color I want except I want the color a little browner than that. Mostly like an auburn. I can't wait to see it. I found either an Aveda/Paul Mitchell (can't remember) salon here at our Hard Rock Casino so if I get the dramatic color, I'll be trusting them to do it.

Sooony, if you search for a member named Tracy, she also is relaxed with color. I'll try to find the thread but her color looks really healthy.

It seems like Aveda color is the way to go! I used biosilk the last time I colored and the results are ok. It is very gentle because I didn't experience any breakage or shedding only static hair which can be easily remedied. I will check out the Aveda academy in NY and get my color done there. Their process seems gentle too and the prices are nice since it's a school.

I have had red in my hair a few times and always end uo coloring back to brown as soon as I can... it fades so quick... i love how it looks on me but after a few washes is dreary looking... brassy almost... i try to refresh it with rinses but it never works to my advantage... sigh... thats why imma stick with my blonde....
