I've seen her hair before and she's on my friends list on fotki, but I don't remember her pw either. I've asked for it, but she hasn't responded. She's def an inspiration:yep:

Thank you so much, ladies. I have not been on this site for a long, long time, but it is nice to return for a bit and see this thread.

Mustve seen this post and didn't want everyone in it?

Oh no, that wasn't it at all, and I hope I haven't given that impression in locking my album. I have no problem with people visiting - that's why I created the fotki in the first place. :yep:

i think her fotki says that some people stole her pics for commercial purposes :nono:

Yes, this is the reason. There were a few incidents in which people lifted my pictures off my site and used them for their own purposes. Someone even claimed my pictures as hers and started giving bogus advice based on my fotki and pictures! There were hateful comments posted, and I even attracted sexual harassment from both men and women. I ignored the first few occurrences, but as they got more frequent (the album in which I posted pictures of my rollerset hair attracted so many trolls), I became a bit discouraged, but I also became wary. I am just one person and I cannot cover the entire world wide web policing my pictures, so I became nervous that there were others out there misusing my pictures without my knowledge. Thus, I decided to lock my album.

I did not share the password with anyone because I know that password sharing is epidemic on hair sites. Give one person the password, and they will share it with 40,000 of their closest friends by posting it in a thread. I think that my days of keeping a hair album are behind me.

That is so wrong! I'm sure she would have shared if asked properly.

I would have.

My sole reason for creating a fotki was to help others the way my hair idols helped me just by sharing their journeys. I owe a lot of my early hair victories (learning how to conditioner wash, finding out that too much manipulation is damaging, developing an arsenal of protective styles etc) to those such as EarthAngel, Maestradiva77, Law, and Ravensholst who created albums and posted tips. I wanted to give back, and this hair thing means a lot more to me than just hair. Women as a group, but Black women, especially, have so much self-esteem tied up in our hair. Our hair represents all the different areas of life in which we have long been told we can't because we are black, in which we have been labeled negatively because we are black. It is an area in which we have been wounded not only by the dominant group but also by those who should love us most. How many of us, especially the dark-skinned ones with 4a/4b hair, have mothers and aunts and boyfriends and friends who struck blows to our self-esteems and preferred others to us because of our "too nappy," "too black," "too short" hair? As a black woman, to be able to grow my hair to lengths I never dreamed meant so much and gave me the courage to stand up to negative stereotypes in other areas of my life, to say to those, like my own mother, who denigrated the blackness of my beauty, that not only is my hair good enough, but I am also good enough. My hair is a garden of love I have tended for so long. Silly as it might sound, I have harvested fruits of confidence and healing from it, and I wanted to give others the support and knowledge to tend their own gardens too. I felt very personally disappointed and hurt to find my pictures misused, and I don't know how to get back the trust that I have lost.

Sonce, I am so sorry. Sorry you had you were betrayed so and sorry that those who never saw your beautiful mane will just have to take our word for it. I am thankful I have memories of it. I don't think I will ever forget that glorious head of loooong nappy hair. What an inspiration you are to me! I wish you continued joy with your hair. Maybe one day you can share a watermarked photo that will clearly betray anyone that tries to use the photo w/o your permission...if only as a lasting encouragement and reminder of what's possible for those who cannot fathom it.

Anyway, I pray you find peace again. And thank you for the hope you gave us.

Thank you, Nonie. You are very kind to write this and I am glad you liked my hair.

Ooh yes, this is definitely an option (maybe this + giving my password to very few will keep trolls at bay). Do you know how I can go about watermarking my pictures?

This is great!

Well, sheesh, just when I had posted my version of a "Farewell, Cruel World," you make it hard to walk away! :) I've been sick of hair sites for the past several months, but now that I am feeling less down on the whole enterprise, I am going to look into watermarking and might be back soon. I'll keep the password on (watermarking doesn't stop sexually explicit and hateful comments), but might start sharing it with a few (and you know you'll be the first to get the password!).

Sonce even if the watermarking works but you still feel uneasy about possible comments coming up please, do what you need to do. I just know how much your journey has been a huge help for many of us with this type of hair.

First, and foremost I want you to feel safe and comfortable!

Hi sonce, since you're wearing your hair out more(I'm not sure where I just read that), do you find yourself brushing or combing it more? Has this affected your retention? Do you wear it out stretched or have you attempted to wield it shrunken?
