i hate ps. they dont look cute on me. during the summer i co washed and wet bunned daily and didnt have an issue with it because it was so hot anyway. but now i like to wear my hair out but yall got me scared to do that. in my mind i think i need to stop using so much heat but whatever lol. right now i have just decided that when my hairveda green tea butter comes in the mail i am going to flat iron my hair and wear it down everyday like i used to. i will co wash daily during the summer again, but not now.

I am not a fan of PS's either. I have never really like any types of weaves. I do occassionally get braids, but I'm to the point where even those are on my nerves.

I work in a professional enviornment, and I don't know how I'm going to be able to pull off that many PS's to work and maintain a polished and pulled together look.

Buns are out of the question...I hate them and hate they way they look.

Since I just started my quest for length I think I'm a bit challenged with roller sets, I've been wearing my hair short for years. I LOVE short hair (and it's way less maintenance)...I already know I'm going to be challenged not to cut it, especially once the weather warms up.

Pray for me ladies, and if anyone has any suggestions or pics on cute, professional PS's please let me know!

It's hard when you feel like you're not measuring up to your highest visual potential. There are those days when you just want to shut it down. I was wearing half wigs for five months. I was wearing them when I started my new job and they'd never seen my hair. I work in a section with a lot of relaxed women. The week before X-mas I flat-ironed my hair, wore it out and SHUT IT DOWN ONE TIME. LOL. I received so many wow's and I enjoyed every single compliment I got. Now they know, don't sleep on ya girl!.
It can be really drab but you have to remember why you're doing it. Keep a protective styling calendar and cross off every week you get through. It will keep you going. The end result will be well worth it.

I'm not fond of protective styles, but they are an integral part of my length retention regimen, so I'll keep doing them until I reach my goal length. Only then will I stop doing them.

I am trying to grow out my short hair into SL(maybe transitioning). Like everyone else here on the board, I have been in PS for about 1 year straight, with 3 days breaks in between:ohwell:. However, I cannot stand PS for anything under the sun. I mean I cannot stand to not see my hair any longer:nono:. I have been in braids, sew ins, half wigs, buns, and I am very sick of it. It really doesn't make me feel good and real AT ALL. I am to the pint that I want to relax after a 3 month stretch or get a blow out and rock my hair. I don't think I can carry on like this ladies, anymore:nono:Anyway, does anyone of you ladies feel this way? Should I just suck it up and stick it out? What should I do???????:perplexed

When I first joined I hated protected styles because I couldn't see peoples growth- I wear them but I also take my picture every month for my own encouragement and later to encourage others. but protected styles themselves I love. Get creative with them, find styles you like and do them, wear your hair out more if you feel better about that. I prefer my hair hidden because if its out I am so in it all day and that equals breakage and then I worry its breaking all the time so for me I rather pin it up and for me its neater. If you choosed to wear your hair out more you have to condition it more and probably have to trim more. I have a curl out here or there, or a bang or put it sides way I get very creative with my hair in terms of having the front part out but the back never its always up always.

This is what i am talking about this is what encourages me. I am waiting for the SHUT IT DOWN DAY. CAN'T WAIT

I use to until I learned how to make them really pretty and sophisticated. I don't hate it at all now.

I actually really love them. I dress up my bun with ribbons and pearl pins and chop sticks and I position it in different ways. I have scarves, flowers, pretty earrings and accessories to make it all better.

ITA with both these posts. Last year I got locked into wet buns almost EVERY DAY! This year I decided to come up with or find a new protective style each week that I LOVE. This way I can enjoy my hair as it grows. The only requirements are that the styles must be quick and easy to do, and of course CUTE! For Week 1 I did a side bun, Week 2 a faux bob (hair ends tucked under and pinned up) and next week will be a funky french (roll). I'll bump up the thread.

So far I am loving the variety, and by the end of they year I will have 52 protective styles that I can pull out of my bum at a moment's notice! :yep:

(butterfly08) I tried to do a faux pin up today and my hair was too thin. It was just funny that you mentioned it. Your hair is beautiful though. My buns always look too thin so I just don't like them on me. But I still have been trying to endure them. I need to get more creative with it though.

Yea, i've never been a protective style type of chick. Well i did for about 2mos when i first learned of LHCF and then i became depressed. For the past 3yrs, I never ever ever wear the traditional protective style. My hair is healthy and i've grown it from shoulder to full BSL. However, i'm sure if i did protective i'd probably be at MBL by now... but i dont mind getting there slowly for the sake of beauty.
I always wash, blow, flat-iron every 2 or 3 weeks, then I do not touch heat until my next wash. I usually wear my hair in a wrap, or I may use like 5 sponge rollers at nite for a little soft curl, or I may wear a ponytail, and I'll do a braidout er now n then...

so the bottom line is that yea protective styling will likely result in you retaining the most hair, but it is not an absolute must.

I think that PS's are overrated, what would be the point in having the "Beautiful" hair if you have to hide it, anything you do to your hair would cause some sort of breakage, hair is not made to last forever, it is natural for hairs to break, which means regardless to what, no matter what you do, you will get some sort of breakage, In my opinion, manipulating it to get it "into" a PS is enough to lose just as many strands as you would wearing it down.

I 1000% agree with you, it takes more time to put my hair in a protective style, pulling my nape hair and stressing out my edges......drives me crazy, I already reply, but I read your response and you are so right......all I have to do is moisturize my hair and wear it down, and not bother it, that's simple than combing, moisturizing, sealing, pulling into a ponytail, smooth the edges down, get the doughnut, comb hair over the it, put a ponytail holder, hair net, another ponytail holder, and done.....a stressful bun. :nono:

Protective styling can be lots of fun. You just have to try new things so you don't get bored. For example, getting back to back braids would be too much for me, but with my weaves I still have some styling freedom. I can't wait until my hair is longer so I can try some of the creative buns I have seen on this forum.

*raises hand*

I love wearing my hair out.

I need a PS that I can wash frequently and that looks cute on me. But I've yet to find one. Twists are alright but they tangle when I wash them and I can only keep them in for a week looking decent. Two at most.

I can't wait until my hair is long enough for buns.

I. HATE. Protective styles. I have a super long head, and I just look terrible with them, no matter how many dangly earrings or scarves I pile on.
They work, though. When I was younger, my mother put my hair in protective braids or buns every day. My hair was hip length without even trying, despite the daily dry combing and brushing that was done to it. So, hate them or not, I try.
I don't like wearing them to bed, though. It seems like my hair breaks off when I sleep unless I wear it down:confused:
