I am trying to grow out my short hair into SL(maybe transitioning). Like everyone else here on the board, I have been in PS for about 1 year straight, with 3 days breaks in between:ohwell:. However, I cannot stand PS for anything under the sun. I mean I cannot stand to not see my hair any longer:nono:. I have been in braids, sew ins, half wigs, buns, and I am very sick of it. It really doesn't make me feel good and real AT ALL. I am to the pint that I want to relax after a 3 month stretch or get a blow out and rock my hair. I don't think I can carry on like this ladies, anymore:nono:Anyway, does anyone of you ladies feel this way? Should I just suck it up and stick it out? What should I do???????:perplexed

I hate protective styling with a passion! However, it's worth it. I'm more inclined to protective style my hair during the winter.

If you choose to wear your hair down, be sure to moisturize and seal before your day begins. This way your hair (ends) should have some protection against becoming damaged while rubbing your clothing. I would so the same at night, as well.

Thank you! I also hate protective styles. I feel like I can't be all cute at work cause i have to protect my ends till I make it past shoulder lengts and my ends would be less likely to get damaged. It's so frustrating...especially when you work in the business environment ( I am a bank teller) and you have to look all cute...

For me, protective styling is just bunning/updos. I've been trying to not flatiron my hair besides my bangs (ie wear it down) till a special event i have in late january. But I have never been one to be low maintenence and i used to always look forward to my wash day because it meant that I was going to have fluffy swanging hair again. I didnt think that i'd be able to make it until recently. My hair is definitely long enough to put in a ponytail and either make a tiny bun or an assisted bun, but nothing that i think is cute without the use of curling irons or considerable premeditation (bantu knots, pincurls, etc). SO i went on ebay and bought a pack of 12'' human hair extensions. I cut the weft up into varying sized pieces, and i wrap them around my real ponytail in order to make fuller, more flattering protective styles. Plus, i feel that my ponytail is even more protected than it would otherwise be since it's mostly concealed by the fake hair. I really feel like this is the only way i can preserve my sexy and protect my hair without getting a weave/braids (which i've never done and never plan to do.)

I don't like buns. Since I twist my hair and put perm rods on the ends, I pull my hair back and do a inbetween bun and ponytail. The curly ends of my hair stick out. Everyone thinks I'm wearing hair piece or somethin(??????????)

The only protective styles I do are ponytails and the occasional bun. Anything else gets to be too much. My hair is thriving regardless, and I like to wear my hair out so I can enjoy it.

ITA..I have spent more on hair this year than anything else.:nono: I cannot go through another year wasting money. Most of this is my fault since I would keep changing up my PS:look:. But I think my hair my be long enough to go with the ponytails or buns with weave:yep:.

I hate protective styles...and my this i mean any style that hides my ends. I absolutley HATE buns!! What I do now is I co wash and put my hair in a ponytail. i'll twist the ponytail while it's drying so it has a bit of a curl, and pin that up for about 15 minutes. then when i take it out, my ponytail has a nice cute curl. This is still a heat- free style and it lets me enjoy my hair/length...I've been doing this for a month now and as I haven't noticed more breakage or split ends.

I use to until I learned how to make them really pretty and sophisticated. I don't hate it at all now.

So I HATE Protective Styles also. I HATE braid outs, twist outs, and I think my hair is too short for an effective roller set (my hair is 3inches maybe 3.5inches long straight). I was thinking about doing bantu, but I would have to bantu wet, and I think that'll make my hair too curly to the point that if I were to pull the curls apart they would explode.

I want my hair to grow longer, I know it will grow without protective styles because it has grown without it before when I was relaxed and I didn't know anything about taking care of my hair. So now that I actually take care of my hair and its natural, I am positive my hair will grow. I just have no patience.

For right now Imma just keep doing me, air drying, blow drying, flat iron. And I guess on days that I don't want to straighten my hair I could rock a hat. Its too short for a wash and go for my liking. But when my hair gets longer I think I'll do better with PS, as for right now, they look ***** on me. Point blank period lol.

I guess I'm an oddball, b/c I like my protective styles. Now that I think about it, my usual style is a protective style out of habit--i guess it grew on me. I like using different hairsticks to keep my bun up so I never get bored....When the summer comes, I may even go back to my trusty cornrows

I don't hate protective styles...I hate ugly styles. Any protective style that doesn't look good on me, I don't wear it.

Right now, I feel like the only style that looks good on me are bantu knot outs. That's not really protective in my book, but at least my hair is stretched instead of in a shrunken fro. Buns/ponytails/twists look ugly on me because my hair is short so I don't wear them. I do like pinning my hair up though.

I think it really depends on the style...not just whether it's protective or not.

I do. However, I know that more protective styling = longer hair for me = fun stuff like braidouts after this dreadful winter.

Plus I have terrible hairnorexia, so this helps.

I hate them and now I am wearing my hair down, because I love to feel my hair around me. I am determined to learn how to grow my hair while enjoying it. If I figure it out I'll let yall know... lol

I actually really love them. I dress up my bun with ribbons and pearl pins and chop sticks and I position it in different ways. I have scarves, flowers, pretty earrings and accessories to make it all better.

I think that PS's are overrated, what would be the point in having the "Beautiful" hair if you have to hide it, anything you do to your hair would cause some sort of breakage, hair is not made to last forever, it is natural for hairs to break, which means regardless to what, no matter what you do, you will get some sort of breakage, In my opinion, manipulating it to get it "into" a PS is enough to lose just as many strands as you would wearing it down.

i actually think that protective styles are beneficial to the health of your hair . yes i agree that anything you do to your hair will result in breakage but the point is to true and minimize the damage that is caused....thats where protective styles come into play.....i do think after a certain point or length as for exampleBSL...you can start to wear you hair in more elaborate styles or ways...i think the most difficult task is trying to retain length once it is pass shoulder length . :look:

Lord knows I hate a protective style. I look about 16 when I'm really 24. They just dont make me feel womanly or sexy.. I feel like a grandma or someone who is too lazy to make their hair look good.

I absolutely hate Protective styles! I have a big head and I never feel pretty with them. keeping my ends protected with protective styles did help in the past though. I am still going to roller set and put my hair in a loose ponytail afterwards to protect my ends.

I don't HATE them, but I'm not a fan. I think it would help if you set a goal, and a date, that you would stop protective styling at.

For example, my hair loves being cowashed. And every day last summer, I cowashed my hair and wore a braidout, only detangling once a week. I retained all of my length, so I know for a fact, that I don't necessarily have to bun, low-mani works well for me. However, since it's Winter, and my hair will be rubbing against harsh fabrics, I decided it'd be best to bun, and then since my hair will be longer, I'll return to my twistouts, braidouts and the other fun stuff, with a bonus-longer hair.
It's a pain, but I only have to do it until March, and once it's over, it's over. Notice my ticker.

HTH.

I HATE BUNS, but I feel that I will reach my goal with buns, but I'm edges are bothering me, I feel like they are stressed out, and my nape is stressed, and I don't even wear my hair tight, so I'm thinking when I get my hair to apl or bsl, I'm going to wear it out, I mean I don't want to keep wearing my hair in buns util I reach my goal.....I mean what's the point of growing hair if you can't enjoy it. I mean ladies who have grew their hair out without protective styling, I envy you.......but when I get my moisture and protein balance, I'm going to wear my hair down......or braidout.....

I don't like them on me. I really like big hair on me so I feel like I am bald headed with styles that keep my ends protected=protective styling. But I am at the stage where, in the past, my hair would start to break off from wearing it out all the time. I also have curlier hair (more shrinkage) then ever before so right now I am not comfortable wearing my hair down.

I was constantly wear my hair in a banana clip and now that it is getting bigger I have switched up to daily puffs. I think that once I start to move past APL I will start to switch my styles up.

I don't like them as well. I do try and moisturize and keep my ends protected when I wear my hair down. I would rather wear it out.

I am 5 months post and I hate em, hate em hate em, I'm tempted to relax because I look like a run away jail bird with all these tacky pin-ups!!

When I first joined, I did some PS while I was learning, but now I don't really do protective styling. One long time member said that it's important to learn how to enjoy your hair at any length.

I only bun or phony pony when I'm too tired to care for my hair properly. Also, I don't think PS are as beneficial as people say. Your hair will grow any way, just make sure your ends are cared for properly.

I am not fond of ps. I have always worn ponytails but I never really cared for them becuase like most women I feel cute with my down. I have always hated how small my ponytail looks. I call it my dooky ball. Since I have been rollersetting I dont mind the buns. I pin curl at night. I dont pull my hair in a tight bun so I have a little body on top. I dont always hide my ends so I can pull it up and have a little curl in my bun. I actually like this style better than my flat lifeless hair when I was going to the beautician every two weeks.
