Hair Dosen't Grow In the Winter Time

...at least that's what my stylist told me. Lately I've been going to a hair clinic in Detroit and he guarantees that my hair would be double the length it is now within 6 months if I follow his practices. But anyway during my consultation he told me that most women hair lie dormant in the winter time due to the harsh cold weather. Does anyone else know this to be true? Just wondering....

Mine does. Alot of women probably experience more breakage due to cold weather, dryness, and friction against harsh fabrics, making it seem like the hair isn't growing.

Yeah there is truth in that. Just like leaves fall and grass doesn't grow in the winter. Everything slows down including hair growth.

My hair grows in this crazy Chicago weather. My hair retains more length in the Winter because I am usually in some protective style and It's too darn cold to be messin with it.

I have not experienced a slowing in my growth, fortunately. I'm in Illinois, so it's definitely cold, but my hair does not seem to be affected really. I have been doing my deep treatments and oil rinses religiously though, maybe that has to do with me being able to maintain my growth progress.

Hair growth may slow down...but unless you're dead I'm sure it doesn't just stop growing completely.

Some people's hair grows less in summer so I think it just depends on the person. My hair is growing the exact same amount as it did the rest of the year.

Are you in Chicago or the surrounding areas?

Where in Detroit?

I think the hair has stages where it automatically grows slower. Not sure if it's related to seasons though.

My hair is growing. Though I will say that it we have a relatively mild winter. But in relevance to his statement. Winter is winter.

My hair grows more in the fall and winter than in the summer I believe. And I live in Canada so you know it's cold. I relaxed part of my hair that I left out of a weave on November 4th, and I have over an inch of new growth (in less than two months). Over summer I think I was getting less than .5 inches per month.

My hair grows slower in the winter - but then, I slow down, overall in the winter too, so that's no big surprise...

It is a common myth that hair grows at different rates during year. But we are not trees and and hairs are not leaves. Our hair does not shed like leaves during fall, get where I am going with this? Its a scientific fact that human hair grows at the same rate all year round.

If you are relaxed, you know that the new growth comes at the same rate. I don't know anyone who can stretch longer just because its winter. It may be harder to retain the ends because winter is harsh on the hair. But trust me its still growing. I feel my NG already

I'm in the detroit area also and my hair seems to grow all year. Seemed like it slowed down in the summer a bit. go figure

A lot of people believe that hair does grow faster in the summer. The heat causes lots of folks to have a growth spurt. But this doesn't mean it grows less in winter. It might just grow at a regular rate then.

If it didn't grow, people wouldn't be going to get touch~ups all year round, and the salons would be empty, the hairdressers broke.

I gain more length in the winter than the summer. I guess my growth cycle is backwards because I don't get summer spurts.

I think everyones ahir grows a lil slower when its cold and faster when its hot and humid, I think thats why some people choose to cut their hair off during the summer.

You know what's interesting, I've heard stories of people who nails and hair was still growing even in death...really interesting

Not true. I BC'd in November 2003 and by June I had a head full of hair. I think it depends on what stages ur hair is in and has little to do with what season ur in at the time.

My hair grows like weeds in summer but still retains normal growth in winter. In fact, I tend to get very hairy in winter. Eyebrows thicker, arm hair thicker etc. I think my head hair feels thicker as well.

Massage the scalp, do handstands or lean over the bed to rush blood to the scalp, take hair vitamins to keep the process from slowing down too much in winter.

I've read that because the skin is kind of shrinking/drying up it's just the appearance of growth...kind of like how as people get older their teeth appear longer because the gums start to draw up hence the term "long in the tooth" to refer to old people (and horses lol).

My stylist told me that hair tends to grow more during the summer because your scalp is sweaty and thus, moisturizes your hair. She also said that working out can have similar effects. That sounds kinda gross, but we all know moisture helps you retain length.

That does sound gross to me. Sweat contains salt that can actually dry out the hair and skin. So I think it's important to try and absorb sweat from your skin when you're working out and to keep your scalp clean.
