about hair... i think it is something of interest to Black women, and would be a good way to spread the knowledge.

i don't know why i feel moved to do this... call me crazy... :spinning:

i'm thinking i should hand out a questionaire at the first meeting, to see what the other ladies would like more info on, so i know what to focus on. what questions should i ask ladies? and any other suggestions on things i should do/talk about would be appreciated!

I will be praying for YOU! :yep:

I use to hold financial workshops for women of color and the first thing I learned was I had to deal with all the negative things they had been taught about money and finances in general.

I used a whiteboard and asked all the ladies to tell me what were the negative things they had been taught or learned about money. I kept those comments up in the workshop until the class ended so they could see what they use to believe and the new things that had replaced those negative beliefs.

I would suggest the same about the hair, until you understand the mindset you are dealing with you can teach until the sun stops setting and some people because of their beliefs just won't get it.

If you get those things out in the open right up front and talk about them then you have a good start. I truly believe in that song - Free your mind and the rest will follow.

Also most will change but there will be some that won't make the transition for whatever reason. Be okay with that, if one person gets it out of all your hard work then it is still worth it because who knows who she will go and teach.

Best wishes to you.

This is a really good idea. We know that there are a lot women out there you can use the help. I say go for it!

GREAT SUGGESTION!!! this is an awesome teaching tool

i know everyone will not agree on all my ideas, and also different things work for different people. hopefully there will be a few others who attend and have good info to share as well. i just think it would be cool to plant a seed in a few minds. after all, that's how it all starts...

Also take your siggy with you if you can get good 5x7 or 8x10 shots and make a poster that will give you some street cred...:yep:

One of the first questions even if not asked will be why is she holding this meeting and what makes her think she can tell me anything?

You know how we are.:look:

ooh, this sounds like such a good idea! i was thinking of doing something similar in my dorm, but they already think of me as "the girl who's always wearing a showercap", or "the girl who's always washing her hair", so i'm afraid any info will fall on deaf ears :ohwell:

very true and a good point. hey mscocoface, can you come join me? you are full of great ideas!

i might PM some people and see if they will let me use their progress pics too. that way they can see a variety of black women who have grown their hair out... to help get rid of some stereotypes and preconceived notions.

Aww thank you I just love teaching ladies of color and have been doing it for a while. Who knows, let me know when and where and I might show up. I will give you permission to use some of my photos if you need them.

Each one teach one right! :yep:

My Momma always says nothing beats a failure but a try! Give it shot even if one person learns it is worth it. You can do it.:yep:

Just as long as you don't direct them to this site... :look:

Ladylibra what great idea! Spreading the knowledge...AWESOME.

I suggest moisture/protein balance for a topic.

Please let us know if the ladies on campus were receptive to your info sharing...i'm sure they'll be begging for more. What we do here is NOT common; folks would kill for this knowledge:lachen:

I would personally be scared. I'm an RA on my campus and I already know that if I held a program for my girls telling them all about hair and cowashing they would very politely (because they like me) ask me how did I become an expert and leave. Try not to tell them things that they are completely unfamiliar too. Break it down to these girls because they are going to believe "Mama knows best" still and your ways of the world don't have any weight. I would begin to ask them why do "WE" grease our scalp. Say "we" a lot not "you". I would let people answer and then say, Yes we grease our hair for moisturizing but did you know there are other ways we can moisutrize our hair to help it to grow. talk about things they know like shampooing and then add to it like lil tidbits of info like did you know it's beneficial to DC yoru hair each time. Make them open up to you...if you don't their mind may be closed (to hair) for a lifetime!

I did a program like this in the spring. Had about 15 girls there. They were really interested and interesting. I learned a few tips from them. I had a PPT and everything. My title was "I Am Not My Hair, But I Do Know How To Take Care of It." I loved doing it! I really want to continue to do it. Some of the women on staff really need it....their hair looks a hot mess! LOL

Great idea, I wish I had the time to do something like this on my campus. The high school girls around here would benefit from this too...:yep:
