that is the question lol. i hear both have their pros and cons but which is better for the "health" of your hair?

I would love to know this. I'm thinking of switching from no-lye to lye....

I was tempted to switch to lye, too. I use to have Affirm relaxers, and my hair was getting thinner and thinner. In January, I finally decided to change to Phytospecific index II. I don't plan to ever change again. I use only 80% of the inductor required for the mix, relax no more often than every 10 weeks (haven't made it to 12 weeks without major damage, yet). I've suffered no more breakage and I'm gaining thickness.

i use no-lye. i'm tempted to switch to lye because everyone always says that lye is better. i don't think my scalp can handle lye though and my hair has been doing well so we shall see.

my hair seemed drier when i used no-lye so i switched to lye and haven't been having that dryness anyone, i add olive oil to mine and have never had a problem with it being to harsh on my scalp infact i got more burn when i was using no lye but that might be due to the fact that i was doing all kinds of craziness back then :lachen:

I use no-lye. I'd love to try lye, but I'm skeptical. I've been doing so well without any setbacks for the past few months. I'm in the process of reaching my goal of WL hair!!:lachen:

Actually I THINK that I used a lye relaxer by mistake a few years ago. I thought I was purchasing Affirm no-lye regular, but I THINK it was lye and the results were amazing. We were all trying to figure out why my hair was so silky, shiny and bone straight.

I used no-lye (Affirm Fiberguard) for years, but my hair thinned tremendously :nono:. When I finally figured out what contributed to the thinning I switched to lye.

My hair is thicker thanks in part to switching to lye and the valuable advice of LHCF.

I too switched to LYE, after being on board... 1st to Affirm, now I am a mizani user, off sheer fact that easier to get... The HEALTH of my hair has definitely gotten better, no more dryness... I rarely moisturize, after greasing scalp once a week... I also notice thtat I maintain more growth, where as before with no-lye there was a lot of breakage...

But, if a search is done, there will be numerous thread with exact question being posed...

well i was a child of elasta qp no-lye and my hair was shiny and slick but i dont know if this was a facade or if it was really healthy.i dont know.im confused but i most likely will be a QP head again since it was so good

This is the best relaxer I've ever used!

I went from no lye to natural to lye back to no lye (and then realizing that was a big mistake) went back to lye. For me lye is best. No lye made my hair dry, brittle and broken off.

I found No lye very drying to my hair, and it started to break off slowly, it also turned my hair a funny dirty brown color. I also found that the stylist tend to over process my hair with no-lye since I was not burning. Now I find it best to wash out based on my clock not the burning, lol.

With Lye, my hair is more moisturized, does not discolor or dry out my hair,

I prefer lye.

Generally, I think lye is best for the hair, while no-lye is best for the scalp. I do my best not to sacrifice one for the other.

This is why I think gentle lye relaxers are best. Or finding a lye relaxer that doesn't burn. They do exist.

Also, thanks for the note on Affirm relaxers. I just got one two weeks ago and didn't like it. I was going to just suck it up and use Affirm instead of Alter Ego while I am at school, but now I know I won't.

From personal experience, even though I used no lye for YEARS, I have just found that lye is better for the health of my hair.
No lye really dried my hair out whereas lye doesn't seem to strip the moisture out of my hair and my hair stays soft.

Lye is the best for me. I did use no-lye for about a year and a half and in that short time, it stripped my hair of moisture, and made it extremely dry, dull and brittle. My hair is so happy since I switched to Lye relaxers. It manages to hold on to moisture better and longer now too. I can go days without moisturizing my hair because of the Lye relaxers now but I try to still moisturize my hair every 2 days all the same.

Yup, I totally agree.

Absolutely agree:yep:.

I think no mix no lye relaxers are the best for my hair. Lye left my hair under and over processsed. While lye dried my hair out so so bad it was scary. So now I use no lye but ONLY no mix no lye which is the best relaxer I have ever put in my hair.

Wow this is interesting, no lye always left me with that dry feeling too, maybe if I don't make it throught my transistion it's something to think about hmm

Hmmm. I was thinking of going to no lye, which I have not done in years, but it could be that I'm just overprocessing with the lye. My hair does not have the thickness it should have.

I am an extreme 4b using Super Design Essentials. I will keep researching.
