withe good health, constant maintainace of you moisture/protien balence, and proper, delicate treatment of your ends (moisturized, protected at night, trimmed when needed) is it possible to use heat weekly with no problems?

has anyone been doing this successfully? has anyone attempted to do this and suffered because of it? i would really like to hear from both sides. :look:

Bumping cuz I wanna know too. I just got my Sabino, but in the past my hair hated flat irons except when done with the marcel irons by a professional who was the only one who seemed to know how to flat iron my hair without killing it. Now I would like to, but I lack flat iron skills, and I DEF don't want anymore setbacks:nono:.

I beleive it is. I have been waiting to do this. Once I get to WSL that's gonna be my staple. I think I could do it now with no problem, but I'm just taking precautions cause I really want to get to WSL!!!

I will continue my regime (prepoo overnight and 2 hour DC's under hot dryer) til the end of my life.

I think that optimal conditioning is the only way...
I will be DC'ing forever too...

how often do you pre-poo and dc?

yes!I have been using heat atleast 3 times a month since April/March and my hair has been thriving.Keep up the moisture and you'll be fine.

i think this is possible too, i used this in the begining of my transition, an it worked fine. i stay away from oil based products when using flat irons as they tend to make your hair fry, i use to get the burnt hair smell, until i stopped using oils. hydrolysed wheat protein, pathenol and Propylene glycol are suppose to be good ingredients in a heat protectant that help seal and ehance moisture with heat usage. i retained length, but i have never gone without heat, so maybe i'll retain more length without heat? i really dont know.

i forgot to mention, i use heat on my DD's hair, cause she wants her her straight and i didnt want to relax it, she is a natural 4b, her hair progress was a little stunted since she got to Shoulder lenght, but since we started straightening twice a month she is now APL from barely touching the shoulders. her ends also look better, didnt realise natural hair ends could be in a state even without heat usage, the heat showed that hair ends where not that healthy,so started triming as well, and the hair thrived. i can post before and after pics of her hair if you want

once a week hair would send me back to the beginning of my journey. Nope, no thanks.
I don't care if i dipped my hair in the most moisturizing products every day. Nope. The heat would ravage my hair.

relaxer + regular heat = disaster

You might find this helpfull

"how often do you use direct heat"
http://www.longhaircareforum.com/poll.php?do=showresults&pollid=616

But i think its possible and i keep wanting to do this, but then i keep going back to "im only 3 inches from my goal, i need to try and do everything good so i can get there as quick as possible" Once im there i think i'll probally use some kind of heat about 2-3x a month.

ETA--I think it will be easier to maintain length with heat than to grow it out, but i know some people have to be doing it. I would love to airdry in a bun or something than iron every 2 weeks or something and trim every 8 weeks...or dry under a dryer and silk wrap.

I guess natural hair might take heat a little better that relaxed hair, as relaxed hair is already fragile:rolleyes:

I'd imagine that it depends on the person, like eveything else.
>>>shrugs<<<

I KNOW that flat-ironin every week is asking for breakage.
Maybe twice a month.
Now...as long as I cowash and stay moisturized---I can wear my hair down with no issue. I don't have to do protective styling. I can wear braids and sew-ins for months at a time and it'll thrive.

But heat-styling?
Nope.
I've been trying to get around it for years. And I can't.
Heat will kill my hair.

You can actually tell when I've been heatstyling too often.

could this be something more suited to the naturals?

i totally agree. :yep:

I think Relaxed hair and heat mean disaster too!

I am natural - and I only Flat iron 4 times a year - So I agree with you dSylla.
If I were to ever relax again ( HIGHLY DOUBTFUL) I would give away every heat tool I own.

Well, not 'more suited'---but...uh, I can read between the lines.

But--
Everybody up in here whose read what chemical processing does to the hair should automatically deduce that relaxed hair is structurally weaker than natural hair.

To say/suggest otherwise, is just...I mean--c'mon now.

Anywho--with that being said, the idea that relaxed hair is more fragile and wouldn't be able to take as much (heat, stress, etc..) is a matter of common sense and simple logic.

Well--except to the militant Relaxed heads who wanna act all brand new, anyway....

>>>phoenixx grins<<<
I'm just playing.
Ok--partially...anyway.
Now don't none of ya'll relaxed heads come in here after me now! I am just playing!
Ya'll know I'm the last person to give a crap what ppl do to their hair...
Hell--I'm STILL majority relaxed.

I've done this from January through March 08, and still managed to retain all of my length, but I still DC'ed once a week, and moisturized my ends twice a day. I don't do this anymore because I started cowashing, and it was alot of work. But if your hair is in a healthy state, it should be fine. However, some peoples hair can't stand heat and some people's thrive with it, so keep that in mind, if things start heading south, ABORT. HTH.

As for the relaxed vs. natural thing- I'm relaxed. It could go either way, one natural may be able to do it successfully because of their lack of chemical usage, others might not, because it takes ALOT of [ETA]heat to get that person's hair straight. To each his own.
