Have you ever seen ladies on this hair forum with beautiful hair? From a far you think they have the same or similar hair type as yourself. However when you take a closer look at their pictures, you realize their hair is either a totally different hair type or hair texture than you thought?

This has happens to me all the time, especially with the texture. I see someone with medium or long hair, their hair is thick and beautiful. Then I realize their hair is nothing like my texture or type at all. Sometimes I see ladies with relaxed or texlax hair but their nautral texture is very soft, you can even see that with a their relaxer or texlax, and the proff is when thir new growth is showing.. Their new growth looks like my hair texlaxed.

Their hair appears extremely soft, or their new growth has soft waves or soft curls that you KNOW your hair does not have! You would have to kill your hair with product or slightly relax it to get a look like the one they have naturally.

I'm not saying I want hair like that person or that I think their hair is more beautiful than mine or that mine is more beautiful then theirs. I don’t believe that at all, I think genes dictate the hair type and texture you’re going to have for the most part and that's cool with me.

I love hair-I would say I even obsessed with hair. But we have to be honest here that it's only just hair. However, it makes you feel extra special when you see someone with healthy hair that looks much like yours. It makes you feel that you can actually attain what you’re looking for because you have a role model. Actually I believe that eveyone with different hair types can agree with the latter.

Yeah, this has happened to me a couple of times. When i look up their profile their 3c. I'm relaxed 4a but my curl pattern (ng) is really soft and defined but i know i'm no where near 3c, lol.

This is one reason why I love seeing new growth and close up shots from people who choose to have Fotkis. It really helps me compare my hair texture, density and strand fineness/coarseness to theirs.

I love looking at hair, but I especially love looking at healthy long hair that is similar to mine because it helps inspire me even more by showing me that someone with hair like mine achieved my goals. :yep:

I totally understand what you're talking about. Initially I believe that my texture was a coarser 4a, but after yesterday (clarified, aphogee 2 min, rinse, deep condition -- yes I know that's alot). Anyway, my texture looks different. My coils are much more defined and not as coarse as I thought or felt. Lack of moisture sure does make things look different.

I agree. I feel like no one else has this "nappy" 4a/b relaxed hard to manage hair at times, but me!!!!

I searched long and hard but I have found some sistas on here with long beautiful 4a/b relaxed hair.

But I had to search long and hard!!!!

Aren't most people here 4a, 4a/4b or 4b? :perplexed

I mean, there are plenty of type 3's and the occasional type 2... but I've always felt that type 4's were the majority.

Or are you talking about the level of coarseness?

Your hair is beautiful. Yes, I gues the level of coarsness would be a good term to use!

Yes your correct in that the curl type maybe 4a, but the texture, feel and look can be different. For example, my natural hair type has some 4a stansds, but looks nothing like your hair-even though I texlazed and it never would..

my natural texture is more of a 4b than 4a and very course, and wiry like, almost not much of a curl pattern. Howver most people dont have that texture on here! But I think eveyone can relate that they have seen someone that "fooled them at first"

Also you can have the same type of hair in tems of classification,so it may have the same characterstics like the way the strand curls, or the way the hair waves up, however there are also differences in the strand, thickness, and texture of the hair.

Some people have the same hair type per say in term of the curl pattern. however one person texture may be much softer or silker than the others. I dont know if I explained it well. I guess this happens to me alot because I'm naturally a 4b and i have meet very few 4b's. (but i think this can happen to everyone)

I feel you....I actually usually get alot of people thinking that their hair is very different from mine...but then they see some of my older pics of my shrunken fro and see that their texture is actually very similar to my texture :yep:

I tried to describe my texture to my coworkers and they didn't believe so one day I took down my bun at work. They were like... :lachen: My coworker actually said to me that "...your hair gives the 'illusion' that it's wavy."

And it is wavy, but very TIGHT waves...and kinks...and curls...my hair is very multitextured and it looks different when pulled back in a bun vs if I just washed it and let it shrink. It just so happens I NEVER do this anymore in fear of tangles....

OP, I know what you mean! But with me, it's a little bit of the other way around...i have a weird hair texture... I'm 4a...some 3c in the back...but my hair is really really soft and my hair strands are FINE...but my hair is THICK(a lot of fine strands)...

Anyway...I see a lot of ladies that are 4a with long hair...but I always assume that they have hair that is a little more coarse than mine... Most people that I know who have hair very similar to mine do not get very far past shouldger legnth...Of course they do not know what I know about hair care... but I have to use low-mani to the fullest to reach my goals...I had to forget about ponytails and brushes... or i would be stuck at SL forever!

MMM ..as for myself my texture when I would have new growth back when I had a perm didnt look like my texture that I have now which is why I dont classify hair by someones newgrowth because once the relaxed ends are off it sometimes looks totally different.

this is why I've never used the hair typing method....because everyone texture's is different and unique IMO...i have too many different textures on my head to even begin trying to classify it as one thing...

DITTO for the FINE STRANDS AND DENNNNNNNNNSE HEAD OF HAIR.

i know what you mean somewhat. i only ever get surprised when someone has their hair type listed in their sig but the picture shows something that looks quite different from my own hair which is supposedly the same type. on the other hand, i do feel sometimes that some of my own pics add to the problem. i occasionally get people saying my hair is exactly like theirs yet they are commenting on a stretched hair pic. my hair is usually stretched and when it is, it looks totally like 4b hair. in actuality, my hair is mainly 4a. the definition is clear in natural light or when i define it properly using gel.

you definitely fooled me. i thought you were 4b!

i understand what everyone is talking about. i get all excited when i think i see someone w/ 4b hair that looks like mine, only to be disappointed that they are not. i appreciate all textures, but i like my 4b inspiration

I have to agree with you for the most part! my sister's texture is different than mine and soare all my brothers. One of my brothers has like a 3 something hair mixed with soft 4a hair. Even with familys with the same parents, hair can vary greatly form sibling to sibling.

I have differnt textures in my hair and different strand thickness, hair is very unique and I honestly think that I have about 2 types of hair and like 3 textures, it's strange.

LOL. your hair looks like 4a to me! I think i'm in this mess cause my hair is texlaxed. My hair is about as thick as yours is natural, but so much thinner texlaxed. :ohwell:

ITA! The bolded areas are exactly how I feel about my hair....we maybe hair twins sweet gal!!!!:yep:

Well, I'm def. talking about courseness. I have zip/zero curl in my 4 hair. I don't know what most hair types are but "most" do not look like mine up close...lol!!!!

This is me in the bolded...I can totally relate.

My strands are fine but I just have alot of them. If I had a curl pattern I would definitely go natural.

My hair IS really coarse though

I have to use a super strength relaxer for 20 mins just to get a texturized look, and it's not highly texturized.

I get you though :yep:

this is me too. i didn't think anybody on here had hair like mine and I still don't

I have no real curl pattern beside the lil patch of 3c hair in the back. It's like 4zz or something. just fuzzy lackluster fragile fine strands. my 3c patch is stroonger that the 4 a/b/z strands. I just wish my hair was thicker and stronger or just softer.

I can't even texturize because all it would be is a processed still fuzzy lackluster fragile mess. So I go bone straight and it keeps my hair flourishing. deviating from bone straight cause me damage which is opposite of everybody else.

also I can't do MOST things everybody else does which leads me to know my hair isn't like anybody else's. I think I may have one or two hair twins.

that's interesting. in those pics i think it looks like i have no coil definition, which would mean it looks more like 4b from my understanding of the term. when i actually bother to define my coils properly, it looks similar to this (this isn't the best picture):

when looking 4b-ish:

but i guess people's perception of what classifies as X hair-type can differ ;)

I'm one of those ladies with fine hair and many strands on my head. I don't know if it's texture, curl pattern, strand diameter, but i get fooled all the time:yep:. Usually by people like ticktock who appear to have the same hair as me in certain styles then do something that my hair can't do that clues me in. I think I've seen 2 or 3 people on this board that have hair close to mine.

Soror you just described my hair :yep:

The problem is probably because some people define their hair type as is (dry) and some others when it's full of products (conditioners, gels, moisturizers, damp). The truth is probably somewhere in between. I have a coarse 4a type of hair (with some 4bs on the back). My son's curls look like mine, but when you touch his hair it is way softer than mine. When wet or full of condish, his hair is more like a wavy 2c type, mine is more a 3c. But to make it simple I consider my hair a 4a-4b, and my son's hair as a 4a based only on the curl patterns not the softness. IRL, nobody really cares, I only think of that when I am on board.

I overstand this statement. Now that I think of it I was really in tuned to feeling that way when I was attempting to dreadlock. I was always running around saying or thinking, "Is THAT what mine looks like?" to others.

Girl, this has been a hidden frusteration of mine forever. When sistas tout a new miracle product or hair appliance and show long flowing hair results, I am quick to get caught up in the excitement only to find:

  1. Hair is relaxed
  2. Hair is not my texture at all
If I could offer a suggestion, it should be mandatory that both the above be identified in siggies so that we can better evaluate the threads.

LOL.

Really? Your hair looks so soft and luscious!!! It's beautiful!!! Have you ever had a regular bone straight relaxer? 20min to texturize means your hair is stong and healthy!!! I love it!!!!
