Outfits and being natural.....

And I seriously don't think that if you are natural you have to "step it up" more, as though natural hair is a negative and you have to add more positives to look cute.

I may be the only one but I actually do think this. And maybe that's why I'm not actually comfortable with wearing my hair as it is.

I've been told, more than once, that if I'm gonna wear my hair natural then I need to "step my game up" because I already have that going against me, especially because my hair is short and I don't have length to redeem me. I've also been told that being "natural, overweight, and not having your wardrobe together" was just way too many negatives and that if I wasn't going to wear my hair straight I better fix the other two.

I'm sure I feel the way I do because of negative experiences I've had. And, because when I see other naturals (on the board and in real life) they're all so extra gorgeous that I do feel like I'd have to step my game up to measure up. So it's easier just to wear a weave and not have to deal with it.

Anyways, no one shoot me please, I'm just talking about how I feel about ME and no one else.

um... no... :look:

i did kinda change my look when i BC'd. i'm kinda eclectic in my cothing style, but a lot of what i wear has an androgynous feel to it. which works for me with APL relaxed hair and natural hair, but not so much with a twa. cuz you know how people think...

I did NOT imply that when I stated it. Sorry you took it that way. I am pretty sure other naturals that feel like "stepping" it up don't do it because they think natural hair is bad

I guess it's more about fashion. Natural hair brings out such beauty in a woman (my person opinion) and makes you want to just express yourself...hence bring out your inner fashion sense. It can be an uplifting experience when a woman goes natural and sometimes she discovers herself...or a a new her. A beauty about herself that she never saw before and she wants to show the world. And UNCONSCIOUSLY (most of the time) one starts to notice becoming more fashionable (if they have inner fashion sense already)

It does not apply to everyone. But please do not think that women who feel this way view natural hair as negative. I did not imply that and there is no reason anyone should feel that way...
ITA!:yep::yep:

This was very honest! Thank you for this insight!:yep::yep::yep:

I know you're not the only one who feels this way. Even a fashionista like me feels the need to be polished with natural hair.

Okay...so it's an excuse to wear heels when food shopping....:look:

But still, very honest and insightful!:yep:

Never mind this silly lamb! :lachen:

Ok… To all my natural Sista's. Have you changed you wardrobe since going natural? When I go out for a night on the town, at times I wear short skirts, low cut tops ect….. It seems like I have to change so many outfits to match my hair.

My question is does having natural hair make you dress more conservative???? :perplexed

Nope...I think it makes me dress more funky. Especially when I am wearing a fro

Thanks ladies for your replies. I believe I have become an accessory junkie. I’m always at the BSS looking for some type of hair jewelry :yep:.

I still dress the same. But my style is eclectic so I can switch from being funky to conservative.

Yes ITA..... It's like my hair is who I am and if my clothes doesn't compliment my hair..... NEXT.

Kieva hair is progressing nicely :yep:

If anything with big hair I feel MORE funky. I want brighter colors, higher hemlines, and lower necklines. People are gonna be looking anyway - best to give them something to look at!

I can't wait till I can rock a BAA in the club. Everybody can worry about sweating their hair out while enjoy myself

Yup, just how I feel. I feel like my hair automatically gives me a unique and funky look. So I dress more stylishly and wear more unique pieces to match the hair. I love it.

I was wondering if that what she was trying to ask.

If anything I think when you are natural you have to step it up!
(JUST MY OPINION)

I think I share this same feeling.

Background:
I'm not a very girly-Girl, I'm fairly simple in general.
I carry the same purse all the time.
Wear the same small gold hoops & diamond studs in my ears.
Same chain & Charm that DH gave me.
I only have a few costume jewlery pieces that I wear sometimes when we go out.
And honestly I'm good in a t-shirt or polo shirt & some jeans

Don't get me wrong, I can dress it all up when needed but on a regular basis I just keep it really basic.

But lately when I'm wearing more natural looking styles. I feel the need to dress it up a bit. I think my laid back casual day-t0-day look makes me look well...almost lazy when I wear the natural styles. Or if not lazy...then maybe more boyish. (I'm short 5'3" and I have a very youthful face)

But I think the natural styles pop more with some cool earrings and a cute top.

The T-shirt style makes me look too...penitentiary.
