To an extent......

I don't buy the whole all chemicals are harmful argument just as I don't buy that natural is always the best argument either.

I think sulfate sensitivity is real but not every will have a problem with it. I think sulfate problems are sometimes wrongly diagnosed sometimes and the real culprit is just crappy product and bad shampooing technique. With that being said, I don't think it is neccessary to use a shampoo with 50-11 sulfates in it either on a regular basis.

Thank you Gym.

I don't use shampoo, so it doesn't really matter to me either way.

I use soaps and such with sulfates in them, and I notice that I do need lotion then, while I don't really need it when I use sulfate-free soaps.

Otherwise, I've got no problem with them. I think that they do their job well, and the problem is for some people - they don't need that well of a job to be done to them.

I think that they can be used safely in moderation but they are not necessary for weekly or biweekly shampoos. I use sulfate poos to clarify my hair after relaxing or to chelate/clarify as needed because I do use silicone serum as a heat protectant. Any more than that and my hair is a dry tangled mess.

It also depends which type of sulfates are used. I don't use any lauryl sulfates in my regimen. :nono: For my dd's hair I don't use any sulfates because she is natural and doesn't use lots of styling products. A mild sulfate free poo is enough for her.

Of the SLS poos I've used I never finishh them. My hair is obviously stripped after the first wash. It hasn't proven to be worth the damage for me to use them.

What she said :yep:

I only use sulfates to chelate monthly and neutralize when I relax.

The problem that people have with sulfates is that they dry the mess outta your hair, because they're way too harsh. Your hair isn't supposed to feel dry and squeeky clean after shampooing. Sulfates take all of the natural oils out, which is drying and could be damaging in the long run

sulfates are very good at stripping the hair of dirt, oils, product, etc. maybe a little TOO good because they can overclean our hair, therefore drying it out.

i don't think they're evil though. shoot Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose shampoo is sulfate-free but it is super-cleansing too, i couldn't use it on a regular basis either.

Ya, I do. Did a test. Suflate shampoo on one side, non-s on the other, major major difference even after pre-poo!:brainy:

For my daughters extremely kinky, dry hair commercial shampoos are a no-no so I switched to shampoo bars and got much better results as far as manageability. They seem to work ok for my relaxed hair so I think the only time I will use commercial shampoos is for neutralizing but I'm still on the fence.

For certain hairtypes yes. For mine? NO. I HAVE to use sulfates or my hair will go nuts. No sulfate shampoos are a total waste of time for me and actually did more harm than good. I just say try it and see what works for your hair

I use both natural poos and sulfate poos and I use the sulfate ones diluted of course in a 1:7 ratio of shampoo to water and apply to my scalp only (for clarifying/chelating purposes) and it works out just fine for me this way. I also love my sulfate-free poos just to give my hair a little break from the sulfates.

Gymfreak's right, overdoing it with the sulfates could cause massive problems for your hair. I tend to use products that have the laureth sulfates (which is milder) and not the lauryl sulfates (which is quite harsh).

I started diluting mine too. Lately however, I have been using the giovanni smooth as silk shampoo and I really like it. I have to only use a little bit because it can be a little strong to but so far so good.

Aubrey's Shampoo strips the daylight out of my hair. Love the conditioner...will use the shampoo on my dog.....when I get one!

Girl this is on my wish list and I want it as my staple sulfate-free poo along with the leave in and the conditioner. I can't wait to get off this BUY NOTHING challenge so I can get my stuff:yep:.

It's not only the "chemicals are bad" mentality... sulfates are honestly harsh cleansers that aren't suited for regular use for most kinky hair.

Most people who don't use all natural products still keep sulfate use minimal.

It's just a fact. They remove all the oils from your hair and can leave it dry.

Off topic:

I used to love aubreys GPB poo. I didn't find it to be stripping at all. I'm weirded out. Was I using a too strong shampoo?

I clarified with the Aubrey's Green Tea Poo for oily hair and definitely found that to be strpping :yep:

i think its hype but ive only used CON no sulfate poo. its good on light jobs but does not get out all the gel when i use it. my hair feel dry after a wash no matter what conditioner makes the problem go away in an instant.

I noticed a difference since I started limiting sulfates. My hair feels more hydrated when I don't use them. Also, my dry scalp problems are not as severe.

Man, i wished everyone who posted listed what shampoos they were using...I was going to start taking some serious notes <sigh> oh well :ohwell:

I have shampoo reviews, girl! Only 3 of which I believe are SLS and I included why that was an issue in the review so you won't buy them by mistake. See my fotki. :drunk:

That would have been a good Idea, huh???

Before 2006 - I used a one for a while:

ABBA MoistureScentation

My hunt for non SLS poos was one that I had for at least 10 years.

CON was a staple for many years, But I tried Poos that were all not SLS, but they had OTHER Sulfates....

The one I liked was discontinued, so I used ABBA for 2 1/2 yrs.

in 2006 - I went to Castile... and Never looked Back.

Yeah! What Kiya said:yep:

No :nono:
I was using Chagrin Valley bars and they made my hair greasy unless I took certain precautions like not using too much CON afterwards..and I started using my Garnier again and my hair has been so soft and moisturized!
I mean I like my non-sulfate bars but with Garnier I get that squeaky clean feel..
