WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY HAIR????? *PICS*

My natural hair after flat iron. I don't put cones in my hair when I flat iron, I particularly avoid serums with cones b/c they don't do well in heat and esp w/ flat irons or curling irons in my experience. I also put oil on my scalp and very lightly in the hair b/c it will weigh my hair down too much.

Does this effect your texture at all? What kind of oil do you use? How do you dry your hair before you flatiron?

If you are blowdrying then flat ironing your hair on 10 your ends are probably fried. Thats how my hair used to look when i blow dried and flat ironed. I got a trim on my ends and started flat ironing on between 3-5. Then I put a little oil on the ends and would flat iron just the ends on about 1 or 2 (giving the iron to cool down)

I have not noticed any negative effects on my natural texture - it always reverts back.

I use coconut oil before and after.

It depends on how I feel and the time I have. Normally I will air dry the night before then flat iron the next day. If I am pressed for time I will blow dry my hair but I still air dry and use the blow dryer to get the left over. I also use it on the low setting not high.

As for the flat iron I have a Titanium Tools Professional Flat Iron by Jilbere de Paris. I think it has 40 heat settings and I usually set mine between 20 & 35 depending.

I also iron in small, thin sections. I use ThermaSilk for my heat protectant. I have found that less product is more.

Maybe too much product on your hair. Maybe you need to get another flatiron. I know when I used to try to do my hair at home (even when I was with a relaxer), I could never get it to look like it would when a professional did it. I don't know what else to say because this board has women who get their hair looking like a professional did it, so maybe you should get a new flatiron and maybe try different products on your hair before you start. I hope that helped. I'm sure you will get more advice from the board in a lil.

Thats why i am no longer a diy'er.

But how can my ends be fried and still curl right back up when i cowash?? Can hair still curl when it's fried?

I saw this tutorial in a thread a couple of days ago, have you seen it?

Also, if you dont, i think you should do really small sections--Like 1.5" long, 1" high--comb first with a small comb, then let the iron down your hair slowly...and if your ends arent really even bump the ends alittle it will make it look more polished.

Fab you need to check out the above fotki!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is the answer!!!
Here is her youtube link:

My hair used to do the same thing when I blow dried and flat ironed. I knew that it could come out straight because when I went to a professional they could get it right. I also knew that my ends weren't damaged because my hair would do the same thing when I flat ironed myself even if I just had a trim.

For me, the problem was blow drying -- which I am really bad at. If I do blow dry before flat ironing, I have to make very small sections and keep the rest of my hair sectioned off and damp. I use either the comb attachment or a round brush (takes a long time). The leave-ins don't matter for me as much as the technique that I used to dry before flat ironing.

Yes, I am natural, and I use the maxiglide. Thats the only thing i use that gets it this "straight", nothing else comes close :perplexed

Are you sure you tried everything, I know the solia works wonders for me. Just put a little Hask straigth solution on before blow-drying and there you have it. Try it for me.:drunk:

Well you sure are discouraging folks (me) from trying to go natural one day in their life!!

Get it together! :spank:

RIght?! :lachen:
Actually Fab, I like your natural textured hair. It's thick, shiny and long. What's your beef again? Your hair doesn't want to be straight. :yep:

You could try rollersetting before hand or just use a pressing comb. also, i've seen some threads by naturals who say they use grease and a pressing comb.

Don't get frustrated, you can achieve straight hair without a texturizer. You just have to practice and find the method that works for you. There are various lines of products out there that will assist with the process. Walgreens has a line a products called bio fusion they have a smoothing shampoo and conditioner both have protein in them so I would only use this product line when trying to achieve straight hair very inexpensive for a small bottle 2.00. There are of course other lines designed to assist with the process Paul Mitchell has a line and John Frieda has one, just have to experiment a little. After leave in of my choice conditioner I apply product by beyond the zone called kill the kink got from sallys for 6.00, apply and use paddle brush to distribute throughout hair, be careful because using too much will cause you to have white flakes in hair when it drys. I would suggest parting hair into 4 sections and braid, either sit under dryer or airdry. Use a round brush once hair is about 75-80 percent dry. Add your chi serum and flatiron.I am 100 percent natural and before I committed to going all the way I had to know that I could get my hair just as straight as it was with a relaxer. These products made a believer out of me. I am 4a/b if you were wondering.

I just spent over two hours straightening this mess to end up with the results below. What is wrong with my hair? It is NEVER ever frizz free or straight. Why???? I am at wits end and very angry and frustrated. I used my maxiglide on friggin 10!! Used Chi heat protectant and serum, dc'd before hand, etc etc. I am sick of this. Do you think if I texturize my hair it will be different??

Fab, I know you want it straight but I do not think your hair is a mess...I think it is thick and beautiful.

Sorry you took so much time w/your hair & didn't get the results you wanted...

I know that I was having similar problems until I found out what worked for me (thru lots of trial & error). Currently, I do the following 1x per week:

Use my steamer to deep condition w/Kiehl's Olive Fruit Deeply Repairative Hair Pak

Apply a little Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In (massage into hair & comb thru)...it also helps to detangle.

I use a professional blowdryer (FHI) & dry in small sections. Then, once dry, apply a little Sabino Moisture Block to each small section you plan to straighten. Massage in & comb thru-paying special attention to the ends...& flat iron in small sections

After that, I had more salon-like results w/zero frizz when I was done. This process keeps my hair looking great & saves me $$$ by keeping me out of the salon.

I hope this helps a little & good luck w/your hair...hope you find what works best for you! Keep us posted:yep:

You are not applying enough pressure on the iron, and allowing the heat to work, use the biosilk before flat ironing use small section and slowly allow the iron to worr, Get as close as you can to the root/scalp with out burning.

i could never get my hair straight till I learned about pushing the back of the pressing comb against the hair slowly and in little sections (important)

So far flat irons dont work on my hair, not without A LOT of passes, I took the maxi glide back the same day I tried it, that contraption wasnt doing nothin but puliing out my hair and my hair was laughin at it seriously like it was gonna do something

Now be warned this is a lot of heat, but i've seen my stylist do this on some of her clients with resistant hair.

1. let your hair air dry some before you blow dry
2. use a brush and concentrator nozzle on your dryer
3. maxiglide on a LOW setting first, in small sections, go slower than you normally would, and steam the ends.
4. then take a smooth(no teeth) cermaic iron like a chi, sedu or solia and straighten and style

everytime i seen her do this, the hair comes out silky straight. ALso, it could be the serum, just use a tiny bit, then try a "spray" protectant like the fantasia one in the pink bottle (sorry can't remember the whole name)... HTH

This is kind of what i do only I do a 'first press' instead of the maxiglide , no blow dry, then a final press

the small sections are the 'biggest' key

Wow!

I did a search on "bio fusion" and this old thread came up. This was before i started texlaxing. Now i'm transition back to natchal, i'm around 4 months post. Sooo, is this the frustration i'm going back to? :perplexed

I am a 4B natural. The ever-dangerous marcel iron gave me my signature & avatar results. Plus I have it done at the shop. :ohwell: She tried to use a CHI the first time... useless. Then she put it away and pulled out the marcel. :look:

I was going to tell you...
it looks like you were not COMPLETELY dry before you flat ironed. I have been natural my whole life and my hair NEVER gets straight unless I let it dry all the way...
Try to do what you normally do to wash and dry, then chill with it blow dried with a nice leave in conditioner...
Then after that use a hot comb and flat iron the next day, I know that is a lot of heat but that is what some of us just have to do. Hot comb then flat iron

Hey Bre,

I didn't read thru all of the responses, but don’t the Maxiglide uses steam. Moisture and natural hair do not mix if you want to stay straight. If so, this may be why you have is fizzy. Try a different flat iron!

There has to be an answer without resorting to chemical for a straight look.

Good luck!

This happen to me when I was natural. I used a moisturizer before flat ironing . I think it was scurl or wave nuevo or something. I know how you feel. The next time I made sure I didn't use those products before straightning.

i think you should try the rollersetting technique next time around. and try that a heat protectant spray. oh, and deep condition and mix it with coconut or evoo oil. something that will give you a really good slip. like products that were make for straightening (Paul Mitchell?) i haven't done this before, but i think the rollersetting technique will help with the frizz and moisture, and it will give the hair some type of definition to make straightening better. i wouldn't blowdry. that is too much heat. and try a different flat iron. HTH in the future. if i get the nerve to straighten my hair this is what i am going to do, but it won't be during the summer! lol!
