All the times in my life where I've worn weave it's been fake. I know that you get the best result out human hair but I honestly think I am disgusted by the idea of walking around with someone elses hair on my head! It makes me feel desperate.

I enjoy a good weave every now and then, but I'm not trying to pass it off as my own, I'm happy for it to be known that it is a weave as long as it looks decent. And I love my weave that looks real but i think I would want to hurl if I knew it was someone else's hair on my head!!!

Yes!:lachen: The idea is gross to me, I can't believe I used to wear human hair. I mean it is someone elses hair, like if someone cut their hair off in front of me and handed it to me I would be grossed out.

I remember women talking about getting the lice shells out of their weave. The hair came from someone who had lice adn they had to get the nits(I think thats the word) out.:perplexed:nono: Not that serious to me, not even that serious.

Just my .02 cents.

I used to love them. They make you look better presentable than synthetic hair. I usually wash them before I put them in my hair, so I'm not afraid of lice or anything. It's not gross to me, I've never really thought of it that way. It's just a preference. I've read a story about how they take th is hair from Indians though unknowingly...and I don't agree with those actions at ALL

This is exactly my reasoning. I know the results are better but I just get so grossed out that the hair has been on somebody else's head first

I totally feel the same I cannot have somebody else hair on my head I just C.A.N.'T:nono:

I've never worn a weave because I personally don't like the concept in general. But if I ever did wear a weave it would have to be human hair because I don't like the way synthetic hair looks or feels. I just dislike the look of weaves that you can tell are weaves. I'm not grossed out by human hair. I have friends who grow their hair to sell for weave making and some who donate hair to foundations that make wigs for people with cancer. They take good care of their hair while it's on their head because if it's not in good condition, they can't get the most money for it.

When I think of wearing a 'human hair' wig....I ... dead people!

Cadaver hair....skull clippings....tomb raiders.......NO. I cannot get past those images.

ITA w/the bolded. :yep: I'm sure the hair is treated/sterilized before it is sold.

I used to be BUT THEN....

I found that if I were going to enhance my hair with "extensions", I need to use what works best for me and my taste. For my taste human hair works best, and is safer for my hair.

NOW WHAT I HATE is all the products designed to make the "braids" look good, whilst damaging your hair.

I have a few "fun" wigs but they are synthetic. (tossable)

I'm confused by this association of human hair with dead people...the human hair you buy in the store only comes from live people who sold their hair...no one cuts hair off dead people. That WOULD be gross.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. It doesn't...gross...me out, per se. But...it feels odd to me.

Though I've great respect for ladies who wear a weave well. :yep:

would they tell us if they did? ....It is my personal hangup because we find out too many things after the fact and many of these are things we NEVER WOULD HAVE in a million years thought some one would do it. Anyway.....ignore me.

I've never thought of human hair as a bad thing. The few times that I have gotten a weave, I preferred the human hair because it looked much better.

Also, I wanted to mention that I've seen plenty of people on the makeover shows donating their long hair for wigs (usually for cancer patients).

Out of curiosity, how much does one get for, say, growing a foot of hair to sell?

LOL. "They" who? How do you know that the conditioner you last washed your hair with doesn't have rat droppings in it? Point being somethings you just don't know but reasonably where would they find all this quality dead people hair to sell? They don't use any and everyone's hair, because you wouldn't put poor quality looking hair on your head. The average corpse is not going to have hair suitable for sale.

Depends on the hair and depends on who's buying it; thickness of the hair strands, thickness of the "bundle" of hair, color of the hair, your race, whether it was ever processed. Some places ask about diet while you were growing it and how often it was washed, whether it was heat treated, etc etc.

I can answer this one from my experience in my area. It's the stereo-type of how some people perceive the human hair. Some people's thinking is that it HAD to have come from dead people, because those very same people don't BELIEVE a person who's alive will actually CUT their hair just so us who purchase the hair can have some longer hair. WHATEVER! So when they put it like that, it just freakin grosses me out!

I've had human hair in my hair when I've done micro braids and had NO problem with it. It's just other people's perception of it that bugs me when they throw it up in your face. Now some of these very same people who've commented about the "dead people hair" sees some cute styles, will actually purchase some and get some done in their own hair. "Now look who's the fool?" is what I be saying to myself, while rolling my eyes at them for talking smack in the first place.

I have no problem whatsoever with human hair, whether it's for braiding or sewing in or whatever. If it's that bad then why'd they have it for sale in BSS then? But I can understand both sides of the issue though, but to each their own. But they're good if done right on a person's head.

Ya'll are tripping me out with the "They wouldn't sell it if it was harmful." stuff, this is America :lachen:People will do anything for a buck, really are you serious...

I think people that just recently died would have hair they considered, quality. If it wasn't just use some Silicon Mix and "Woola, Perfect!"

I am still :lachen: "They care about us!" and how many people end up with birds nest days after putting in weaves? Silicon Mix must of worn off.....:ohwell:

I completely agree, this is America and people cut corners where ever possible to make a buck.

But my point was that the average person on the street does not have quality hair, so when they up and croke, their hair still won't be quailty regardless of what you add to it.
There are standards when it comes to buying and selling human hair, if you look at sites like http://www.thehairtrader.com/ and www.hairwork.com, you'll see that buyers are very particular about the quality of the hair they purchase and the lifestyle of the person selling it.
Manufacturers of quality weaves wouldn't buy poor quality hair because it's not going to be weavable and that cuts against their bottomline.

Now, it's another story if you're going to buy the cheapest packet of human hair from some back alley manufacturer who probably smuggled the hair in from God knows where grown by some malnurished person who only got paid $20 for it. But that's the same thing with any other product you buy.

The PROBLEM IS: According to latest news reports: The FDA is not checking a major portion of the products that are made available on the market for consumer use. That includes imported goods, foods, children's toys, drugs etc. All clarification as to safety is generally years after the facts. That is why there are so many major law suits going on.

They are not inspecting goods at the border entries, by land, sea or water. It is a national disgrace. We hear about too many 'sick' stories when it hits the news and we only hear a little of the stories that are happening. I understand that they wash the hair, dry it etc. Who is there to decide whether a dead person's hair is good enough to be donated to 'locks of love', or sold wholesale under the table to hair extension manufacturers? I understand that some of the hair that is cut off in hair salons, ends up at these places, so, why not?
WHO IS CHECKING......WHO KNOWS WHO IS DOING WHAT....? How long was that funeral director, burying bodies out in the yard of the property of the crematoriam" Months...Years....Who would have believed that? the bottom line is, they are using other parts from dead people (Do you have a donor card in your wallet?) eyes, skin, hearts, lungs, etc. etc. They are using "placenta....and embryonic fluids etc. in hair products and skin creams. Nothing is 'sacred' anymore. They are using cadaver skin on burn victims. Please do not assume that they would not use 'Hair' from cadavers. That is what 'hydrologized protein" (hope I spelled that correctly) is said to be made of. Hair......the question is, WHOSE? After they wash it off, deep condition it and spray it up with some 'shine' and thickener.....how would we know.......? Creeps me out, I tell ya! bonjour

That's why I make most of my own stuff. I do not trust their sales pitch or their ethics. And there could be some rat droppings in a lot of stuff. Even our food supplies (vegetables etc).
Remember, scalping was NOT invented by the INDIANS!

Anyway, there are some people who have their home business selling hair out of their basements. They take the hair and fix it up and sell it. It does not look anything after they have doctored it up in their basement, like it did when they got those batches in. And their target market was black people. They also carried 'synthetic hair" that included the wet and wavy and all the fantastic looking types, and they performed these miracles in their basement. I personally saw hair floating around in tubs, soaking. They claimed that they were just preparing it to make the different types of curly hair that people like to buy, but they were indeed BOOTLEGGING HAIR!!! Someone put me on to this buyer to check them out a few years ago and I had to make an appointment and I went and saw their supply and to tell the truth, that is when THE ALARMS WENT OFF IN MY HEAD....cause I realized, if they had to do all this stuff, the steaming, the stitching etc. in their basement....they WERE NOT RECEIVING THEIR SUPPLIES READY MADE!!!!!!!! from some reputable company.....and they obviously WERE NOT BEING CHECKED OUT TO SEE IF THEY WERE MEETING ANY STANDARDS IN THEIR BASEMENT!!!! And God knows who their supplier was!!!! Or who all they were selling this stuff to. I am not making this up. Did I buy anything. No. Cause I was shook and grossed out. Oh, by the way...it was A white lady running this business out of her basement!!!!!!selling to 'black people among a few!"

Yes. According to their sales pitch. What would you expect them to tell us, something different?

I agree with the points made by Mahalialee in this thread. Most of the hair used in weaves and extension have been collected outside of the US, and unless you're at the hair plants on the daily doing inspection, you have NO idea how the hair is really collected. Haven't people been paying attention to the recent scandals involving products made outside of the US, especially the products made in so-called developing countries? You never know for sure what you're getting.

As for me, wearing human hair grosses me out, and I refused to wear it for the longest, until over 1 month ago. I decided to braid my hair so I could go to the pool 3 or 4 times a week, but the thought of putting again those synthetic and plasticky extensions that make me itch was so disgusting, I decided to overcome my grossed-out feeling and I use human hair instead. The feel of real hair is much better. I did my own little ritual to it, blessed it and blessed the person whose head it came from, and I think I am okay with it now. Whenever I think about it being someone else's hair, I bless that person. :yep: And as soon as pool season is over, I'll take out the hair.

I agree. I have never thought there was anything wrong with human hair. The human hair is processed. Some of these ladies are acting like they are wearing someone's used drawls on their heads. Human hair is ok in my book!

Um...why would you buy ANYTHING out of someone's basement?

I'm thoroughly amused. I'll say this; for anyone who believes that human hair comes off dead people's heads or where ever, after you've reached your long hair goals, try to sell your hair. I'm not tell you to actually sell it of course (unless you want to). I'm saying TRY to sell it, post it for sale on one of the bidding sites or take it to a salon for a appraisal and see how it goes, see what the procedure is. See if they're willing to buy it and if so how much they offer for it.

First of all, I did not know it was in a basement when I called there. I got the number, made an appointment. Went to the address given. It was in a house. In the basement. Since we were there, we said. "Let's check it out". (Hubby was with me.) He was turned off as well. I am a licensed stylist checking out stuff. I live in N. Canada. what more can I say? Hubby says to me "Where did this stuff come from...for all you know it could have come from ....people." It got me to thinking!!! I bought nothing!!!!bonjour

Yeah, I wouldn't advise anyone buying anything out of someone's basement unless you know that person really well, so you def. made the right choice.

My point about the standards with regards to buying hair, is that legitimate manufactures have standards. We look for quality made conditioners and shampoos for our hair, made by trusted company names, the same scrutiny should be applied if you're selecting a weave. Look at the quality of the product and know the company you're buying from. We, can't buy a weave from Johnny on the corner, get some nasty infection and then say that human hair weaves come from dead people because we choose to buy some shady ish.
There are standard for buying and selling human hair, it's up the the buyer to know what they're spending their money on.
