I don't know why I haven't tried CO washes since I went natural but I did it yesterday and my hair came out so soft. Just added olive oil, castor oil and some conditioner and let it marinade for about 2 hours (while I watched the hockey game...still sad my team didn't make the playoffs but anywho... :) ). I then combed out each section (4 in total) and I hardly had any breakage.
And because I have been having some weird buildup/film on my strands I decided to do without the leave in and just added some gro aut oil and the comb just slipped right through. I think I had about 5% of the conditioner I used still in my hair but basically I just oiled and combed.
Any others not use leave in? How long have you been doing this? Any negative effects? Benefits?

I wear braids most of the time and as long as I am in them or twists, I do not use leave-ins. I have been doing the "no leave-in" thing since August 2001 and haven't had any problems. I just wash and condition and ACV rinse at least twice a week, and DC once a week, and baggy every night. And my hair and skin love this regimen. (I mention skin because when I used products in my hair I seemed to break out often.) As long as I'm not combing my hair, I can do w/o any leave-ins.

When wearing my hair out, I usually use S-Curl spray as my leave-in as it provides the slip necessary for a comb to glide through my hair.

If you were combing more often would you use leave in or still just the scurl? Scurl is still not a "standard" leave in so if you have been using it since 2001 with no adverse effects then yay. Thanks :)

Bump...

Today was the very FIRST time I have not used a leave-in... and let me tell you my scalp is breathing and my hair is light as a feather. :yep:

I rolled my hair...air dry...used no oils...no sealing..and got no tangles.....nada...tonight or fairly soon I will probably need to do something???? but right now I'm just playin' it by ear....

I hadn't worn my hair out really till 2007 and when I did, I tried every leave-in I could get my hands on and all they did was make my hair curl back on itself so tight till it was fit to be a mat. That made coming it a nightmare. Tried S-Curl and not only did it make my hair fluffy and soft, but it kept it moisturized for days. After two application on washday, I didn't need to apply anymore till wash day 3 days later by just baggying every night. I guess I don't know what a "standard leave-in" is. I assumed anything that you don't wash off is considered a leave-in. No?

I only discovered S-Curl's wonders on my hair last year after my BC. Before then, I never applied anything as a leave-in since I was always in either braids or twists. S-Curl is the only moisturizer that made my hair manageable and soft w/o being sticky and icky. And as a bonus, it made my coils pop.

So if I were combing more often, I'd use S-Curl because it's the only thing my hair seems to love.

I don't use a leave in. Just some hair creme, oil to seal and call it a day. I'm considering getting a leave in conditioner, but my hair has been doing quite well without it, so...

I don't use a leave in. I just leave the conditioner in my hair now. I use a lot less butter than i used to and my hair is much more moisturized.

Today i cowashed my hair left a lot of the conditioner in my hair and used no butter at all and my hair is really soft and defined!

can any conditioner be left in?

It depends on my mood. :look: If I wash with shampoo, I always use a leave-in, but if I do a cowash, I may skip it.

Thanks for the replies ladies. So no adverse effects...that's good to know.

What I mean by standard leave in are the products that are specifically marketed as leave in conditioners. For example that Neutrogena silk (touch?) one. Bottle says leave-in...

Hmm, I guess leaving a bit of a conditioner from a CO wash would work too...

I used to be a big fan of scurl until I noticed it gave me zits everywhere is touched AND it tangled my hair. I think it's the glycerin.

I don't know if this counts, but I have been out of my usual leave in for a few months.
Now, I just take a bit of con and oil, put that in my hair and bun it up.

hate leave-in conditioner!! I have a sensitive scalp, and like the other lady in this thread, I don't like to leave ANYTHING, ANYTHING AT ALL, on my scalp!! So I do use my silk elements leave in moisturizer, which I love, and then I do seal with about a half dollar sized amount of hot six oil, and that is it!!

I hardly use a leave in either now that I CW regularly. At the most, I won't rinse the conditioner completely out, but usually don't add anything after washing other than my styling product. Well, I've been using Mixed Chicks Leave In/Styling lotion which I guess doubles as both....so maybe I do use a leave in, but I consider it more of a styling aid. Ah well...

BTW: CONGRATS ON COMPLETING YOUR TRANSITION!!!! :)

I've actually moved to just rinsing my hair and combing through a little water/jojoba oil/conditioner mix while my hair is still wet and adding Qhemet Burdock Root Cream to my ends. I'm alternating that with just using coconut oil only after rinsing with the Qhemet BRBC on my ends as well. This has been working surprisingly well and I'm not even rinsing daily. For the last three weeks, I've been wet my hair a total of 4 times without dryness issues at all. I am super surprised and I plan to try out the Giovanni + coconut oil when I'm done with the jojoba mix and see how that goes.

I still LOVE Giovanni Direct Leave-in, but other than this leave-in, I've always left in regular conditioners, but I've been too cheap to use those conditioners as my daily cowash conditioners because my conditioners are usually costly ($8-16).

As of today i did not use a leave in. I was checking out the 2 threads post. The one about leaving in he conditioner and oils. The other about sealing in your DC with a oil. i did both today sealed in my Dc with EVOO. caused more slip with the ntm mask. Than i applied a little ntm mask to the 4 sections i had than re sealed with coconut oil. My hair is soft and shiny.
We will see how this goes in the next coming days but it should be good.

How is the gro-aut oil working for you?

Thanks for the replies ladies. I'm still doing the no leave in thing. I was using Giovanni's direct a couple year's ago but I find it attracts dirt/link to my hair and causes it to look dirty before it's actually time for a wash.

Mahalialee, I am still using gro aut but honestly I don't see any growth. :(
I may try the OCT next, maybe I'll have better luck with that. The gro aut is very moisturizing but I can create my own similar mixture for less so I don't think I will be re-ordering :)
