If anyone has tips to keep braids fresher longer, also moisturizing them, would be appreciated

A few things I do while in braids that help me maintain them longer.

Baking Soda rinses.
I use 1 tablespoon Baking Soda and 1 1/2 warm water in a applicator bottle to wash away dirt from my scalp and hair while in braids. I don't use shampoo anymore b/c baking soda does the job well. But if you use shampoo you have to agitate hair more to rinse out. Baking soda is perfect for braids followed with ACV rinse (for ph) and applying diluted conditioner afterward and do a final rinse.

Applying diluted braid spray or favorite leave in's with a sponge directly to the braid instead of spraying the scalp. The sponge helps get moisture where you hair is within the braid and helps eliminates scalp buildup so much. Crown Glory method from GrowAfroHairLong.com.

Wearing a silk scarf around braids to bed.

Redoing the edges every 2 weeks.

Hope this helps.

I wear braids with extensions every summer and follow the C & G method,
I use Diluted Infusium and also African Royale Braid Spray Don't get African Pride. It's not as good and it's not a black owned company....Royale is.

I don't wash my hair frequently when I'm wearing braids I mainly concentrate on the scalp and the new growth and I use the two sprays to moisturize down the length of my hair.

I have a hand held shower sprayer. When I want to wash, I dilute some moisturizing or clarifying poo in a small bottle. In the shower, I hold the length of the hair up in the air and I pour the mixture over my scalp. sometimes I might add a dab more of undiluted poo on my fingers and then I use the other hand (that isn't holding the hair) to lather my scalp in between the squares. Don't scrub hard or it's make your roots too fuzzy too fast. also, I really don't want a lather. Then I spray water really close to my scalp to wash the soap out.
By holding the hair up, the soap and water won't run down the braids and they won't be saturated. Synthetic hair takes forever to dry and the back of you shirt will be wet all day.

Another method I use is, I clean my scalp & new growth with just warm water & a wet washcloth.
I do that almost every day.

I only saturate my whole head of hair if I've been swimming in a pool or the ocean and it needs to be clarified. Other than that, I mositurize with the sprays.

HTH.

I spray my hair with homemade spritzes and I wrap the hairline with silk before bed. As far as shampoo - I do that MORE often in Braids. I love the feeling that I can hop in the shower every couple of days... My conditioners are a bit lighter.............

Thank you for your tips. If I wet my hair it tangles bad, can't get the comb through it. So I look for other ways to keep them fresh.
