Washing Twists or Braids....

Im thinking about just washing and deep conditioning my hair while its still in twists....then just redoing each one so I dont have to part I know, I'm lazy...

But really....it seems like it will be less manipulation and would take less time. Im just concerned about possible build up from the deep conditioner...... I use pretty light ones so it should be cool.

Has anybody ever tried this? What was the outcome?

I do this on a regular now, since I DC every week, but only take out my hair every two weeks....so far, I haven't noticed any buildup on my strands - but I also spend 10-15 minutes rinsing my twists out when I do.... I think that as long as your rinse WELL, and maybe step up your clarifying a touch, you'll be fine.

You may already do this...but I saw this in Naturallady's fotki about washing braids and twists:

"The stocking cap method goes like this: You put a stocking cap on over braids or twists so that when you wash them, you won't have any frizzies. Pour whatever you are going to use to wash your hair with, be it conditioner or shampoo in a cup and dilute it some with warm water. Get in the shower and pour it over your head. Don't rub, just kinda pat it. Too much rubbing will cause the hair to frizz a little bit. Rinse it and repeat as many times as nessesary. Press on your head with the cap on until you get as much of the water out and then take a towel and press against your hair (with the cap still on). By this time my hair is practically dry. Take your cap off and firmly press it against your head to absorb any more excess water. Then I shake my head like I'm saying no for a while to shake off any more water and then my hair is basically dry. No frizz, no detangling and minimal shrinkage."

i did and still do this...saves time since i have a baby and a 3 yr old to run after..last year i went for a month- two before redoing my twists. did everything I would normally do including ACV rinses, DC. Just made sure i stayed under the shower a little bit longer and touched up twists that may have loosened a bit after. Bonus my hair grew a lot since I did not manipulated it much.

Thanks for posting that fnggrant....On average I wash and deep condition my hair every two or three weeks...which is almost an LHCF sin

So needless to say...I dont employ that method....but I might start doing it. My hair is getting longer, which equals more work...so I need to start using new methods. I may try that as a diluted DC and see what happens.

Pikkin....I could kiss you!! Man all of these encouraging stories are really making my day. Just to clarify, did you say you went two months doing this method. I think Im about to try that...LOL. Im so hair lazy This could be a revolution in my hair regi...no more 6 hour twisting sessions for me...(that includes movie and distraction time...LOL) Do you use anything to cover your hair like natural lady suggests?

What i do with mine is to put in 5 or 6 big braids and use ponytail holders on the ends so its doesnt unravel. Then i apply clarifying shampoo to my scalp. I gently massage my scalp for a few minutes then rinse. I gently squeeze each big braid a few times and just keep rinsing till it feels clean. Then i DC my hair making sure its not getting on my scalp.

I do it the crown and glory way, put water and shampoo in a cup (diluted basically) and pour over hair making sure I get all of scalp and hair. Then use sponge (soak with water, squeeze, soak with water, squeez, etc.) to wash the diluted shampoo out. That way the braids/twists are not soaking wet and I know my hair is getting clean, I do not condition in braids, just apply a conditioning spray mix while wet. I re-do sections every two weeks. I can keep my braids in for months without it looking messy for months this way.

Rinse hair with water in shower
Pour mixture of amla powder, shikakai and Reetha powders and water to make a brew. Strain the little grains from the powders and but in a color applicator bottle.
Pour over hair and scalp and scrap scalp with a comb.
Leave in brew for 10-15 under shower cap
Deep condition
Rinse with water
Get clips, pins or bands to section off hair
undo twist apply moisturizer (now i have Gio. DL) and retwist
Going on two months now and LOVE it...

I usually see shedded hair in the shower and so this to me is psychologically better LOL. I don't see hardly any hairs only when I untangle my twist with either my fingers or a WIIIIIDE tooth comb...
Sometimes, I only do the front twists and gather all the twist and make a big bun, today I have a side bun....With buns, you can't see the fuzzy twists inside the hair hiding...

Heh, oh yeah, they are crazy frizzy the second week - I wear them in an flattwisted updo, though, so the frizz is well hidden - it really looks almost like 'loose' hair.....

I dont' do ACV rinses, so no help there....

I co wash at least 3x weekly and have been doing oil rinses 1x week so far. I dont use a cap or sponge, just diluted condish and shower pressure. I'm loving it.

I've tried the stocking cap method but my twists always get fuzzy.

I'd be careful when retwisting, to make sure that each individual strand of the twist is loosened before you retwist (I hope that made sense ). When I don't loosen each strand of the 2 strand twist and I wet my hair often, it results in locs.

I don't know about your hair texture but my 4b hair is made for loc'ing and will jump at the opportunity to do so.

no, I kinda squish the conditioner through my hair in sections from top to bottom to make sure it gets through, and then I let the shower rinse it out. I do get very frizzy as I am natural and my hair is fine - what helps is after airdryiing as much as possible, puttig on som eleave in and trying a satin scarf really well and finish the drying that way.

Freshly washed braids can look so prety!

I've not tried this, but there is a woman on np.com who says that this is the best method for her. She can't have wet and loose hair at the same time because the manipulation is too much.

Thats my plan. This weekend will make three weeks for this set so Im going to wash/DC and retwist and then repeat the process. Thanks for the affirmation.

Well, I've had corn rows in for a month. I had twists in for 3 weeks. I can wash them and leave them in or wash them and redo them one-by-one detangling with my fingers making sure they don't lock. Either way is fine if you make sure you don't leave them in for too, too long. I wash like normal and condition like normal. I don't use an ACV rinse or a clarifier. I probably should to be on the safe side, though.
