or braids, dO u automatically assume they are struggling in the hair department? I notice this is the general attitude although it is usually untrue.

I used to, because I knew them and they didn't take care of their hair and did not want to cut it in a style. But that was only when I saw weave like a sew or glue in. but braids, I figured they were growing their hair out, or wanted to rock the trendy braid style i.e. micro braids, kinky twist. I now understand the other uses of a sew in ( I still don't like glue) like as a protective style. (like Im rocking now)
Thanks LHCF:yep:

Actually I never assumed that they had damaged hair or a hereditary problem. But unfortunately, it's usually the case with the people that I see. :(

With braids-no but with weaves- yes. This is probably because pre-LHCF the couple of people I knew with weaves didn't have the healthiest(*cough*-read all tore up) hair.

Absolutely not bc I was wearing a weave 2 years straight to transtion and grow out my hair. But unfortunately the general public seem to think that. I bet some of my peers was suprised (I could tell)when I finally wore my hair out bc it is healthy. I am a recovering weave addict..lol

I used to, cause most women I knew were actually bald headed. And people who had just met me when I had braids always assumed that I was bald headed. They'd always be surprised to see that I had long hair. But I dont' think like that anymore because more and more Black woman have longer and healthier hairtoday than they did ten years ago; including myself. Everytime my hair grew to my shoulders; it would break off again. Not because I can't grow it, but because I didn't know how to properly take care of my hair. Last year, was the year that I decided that my hair won't break again. I have learned a lot from this website and reading books.

Hopefully when I go back to work, I will be able to rock my beautiful hair, and not braids. which is what I use when my hair is in trouble. I don't want my hair short again. I want it BSL and beautiful.

So...the answer is yes and no..lol.

No. I don't think a whole lot about it. Unless the weave is very obvious I don't even notice. I saw my cousin last week for the first time in several years. If she didn't tell me she was wearing a weave I never would have guessed because it looked like her natural hair and with same length.

ITA... I'm sure people thought I was baldheaded because I always had weave. But I'm not so I don't assume everybody else with weave is bald headed either.

I used to....but now I given them the benefit of the doubt that they may be on the LHCF tip and just protective styling

if I see a whole lotta goupy gel in the front then I can't ignore that:ohwell:

Nope not at all. I don't tend to think why they're wearing them. I just take notice of the style LOL I don't worry about other people's hair, since it's none of my business you know. But when it comes to braids, there's lots of variations of them, so the style of it comes first for me. But when it comes to weaves, sewn in or glued in, sometimes they can be easily spotted. You know how when someone sleeps on it, it'll leave an indentation across the hair that is covering it up. LOL But I don't say nuffin'

Florida: Yes.
ATL: No
NYC: Maybe

A lot of women down here do have problems with hair, and believe the hair itself has "healing properties" that can grow hair or just don't like their hair texture. Many stylists around here are fly-by-night, so they don't know what they are doing; just slap-on-a-perm-and-a-weave type women. Sofla is weave-city and no one here has long healthy hair (white, hispanic, black, asian or mixed). But, since many of the members here are from ATL or NYC, I would assume she is an LHCFer.

No, I have a few friends that have fairly lenghty hair BSL- MBL and they will weave it up in a second. One of them fancys phony ponies and another loves straight 8 in sew-in she has no desire to cut or straighten her naturally 3a curly hair. Others just don't like doing damage to their hair to obtain certain styles...i.e spritzed crimps or curls with marcels....

not necessarily, my sister has shoulder length natural hair unstretched and she has braids or kinky twists most of the time, because shes still deciding if she wants to loc her hair or not, with people i dont know im not really that bothered so i dont normally take notice

honestly, yes. i assume that something's up with their real hair. when i wore braids for a year, it was because my real hair was looking pretty sad.

I'm used to thinking that weaves are a styling option in NYC- many people just want to get up and go quickly.

Normally I don't think about what's under the weave, but I do think that she's not happy with whatever it is.

Okay, I wore weaves and braids to give my hair a rest (my hair grows well in them) and I was shocked at the reaction when I take them out. One guy at work even told me "I thought you were a chicken head. Why do you wear that mess". A good friend told me, "I almost fainted when I saw your real hair. Why you weaving and braiding and going on when you got hair?"

Most people assume you don't have hair when you wear a weave or braids and sad to say but so do I. Even though, I do it for protective styles and I know a lot of people are catching on, I still assume they are not using protective styles.

:lachen::sad::sad::sad::lachen:...............I have heard that too!!

Actually, I'm a braid wearer and I'm most definitely not starving for hair. Also, my sister has a weave in right now and she is BSL. She wears weaves to give her hair a break.

I know people use them to give their hair a break, but that is not the case most times.

I personally think that the person has not quite embraced their own hair and are addicted to weaves and braids. There are so many people that just do not feel pretty without weaves. It is a shame.

Personally over time, I find that women wearing their own hair, short or long is more attractive.

It depend on how the weave looks! :yep:

It the fake hair looks tore up (mismatched, uncombed, old and just hanging:nono:) then I assume they don't have a clue, but if the weave is styled and looks well cared for then I assume they are just gettin their "that girl" on!

ditto................

Generally don't think about it unless the style really doesn't suit the person. I admit if the weave looks bad enough for me to notice, I wonder, "How bad does her real hair look that she believes a jacked-up weave is an improvement?"

Hmmm, I actually see a lot of women down here, on a daily basis, with long and thick hair (full APL or longer). More than NY. My hair is pretty short compared to some of the women I see on the regular down here. I'm not sure the kind of women you run into, so I can't make a educated opinion, but I've never met someone who thinks hair has "healing properties", not just in Florida, but anywhere :lachen:

I agree that a lot of stylists down here don't know what they're doing, but that's the same anywhere.

As far as making an assumption on the health on someone's hair just because they're wearing weave...I don't really think about that. But things I would look at to make that assumption are their edges and the condition of the weave. If they don't even know how to properly take care of weave and look like thy been rollin around in dirt all day, then chances are, they don't know how to take care of their own hair either :look::lachen:

I didn't vote on the poll because i don't like the way choices are phrased.

But I am going to say that this is something I need to stop doing. I recently was at the salon and a natural 3c MBL came to get a sew-in like Rihanna's jagged bob. Just because someone has a weave in does not mean they don't have healthy nice hair, for her it was a styling option to get the cut she wanted without actually cutting. And thats beautiful!

or braids, dO u automatically assume they are struggling in the hair department? I notice this is the general attitude although it is usually untrue.

Struggling? Yes, to some degree in ALL cases. :yep: Whenever someone adds hair to their head, I assume that it is b/c they feel that they cannot achieve the desired results w/o it. :yep:

For example, there are many protective styles that do not require hair extensions. :yep: You can grow your hair out w/o weaves and braided extensions. What's other excuses are there for wearing them? For fullness? Well, then you are struggling for the total amount of fullness that you desire.

Do I think that weave and braid wearers have unhealthy hair? Not necessarily, but sometimes yes. I usually assume that their hair is not that long to be honest.
