Has going natural thickened your hair?

I'm transitioning right now..but I've definitely seen an increase in the thickness of my hair. Also, I think that I'm retaining more hair (not lenght but actual hair) because I have left scabs and leftover bald spots from my relaxers....

Yes my hair is definitely thicker. When I relaxed it was really thin, but now I have to section my hair to comb it thoroughly when I wash. I love the thickness of my hair though.

:yep:, my hair is ultra thick. It thrives better when I'm natural.

I don't think it will happen for everyone though. My hair was thick when i was little too (was natural back then).

People used to tell me my hair was thick when it was relaxed. I didn't see it for myself until I went natural.

Going natural didn't thicken my hair, ditchen the perm did (if that made sense). My hair was always thickish but perming destroyed that. Now my hair is thriving as a natchal.

yes. one of the problems i had when i was relaxed was my hair had always been so thick. so it felt like i couldn't get any of those nice sleek straight styles. it would always look like i had underprocessed my hair no matter how long i left the relaxer on. however, every so often, my hair would get damaged from poor styling practices and overlapping relaxers would cause it to thin out badly and break. i've had to cut off weakened relaxer strands at least twice before i decied to transisiton.

now that i'm natural i've come to find out my hair was way thicker than i ever imagined it was when i was relaxed. the good thing is that if you're natural i think your hair can be super thick and it wont be a problem (in terms of how it looks) at all. it makes twist-outs/braidouts look really good, shrunken & picked fros look awesome and you get those full, thick twists.

I'm no chemist but a stylist once told me that in order for a relaxer to straighten, a layer of hair is basically stripped (same thing for peroxide type colors). So if this is true, I would think that anyone with natural hair would have thicker hair than if they had a relaxer.

Relaxed- it was thick enough to be confused as a wig/weave
Natural- it is thick enough to be confused as a Wig /Weave (albeit a nappy one)

Yes, :yep: my hair is thicker as a natural. I got my hair straightened for x-mas, and family members kept telling me how thick my hair is. I was thick haired a a kid too.

My hair is the same relative thickness. When I was relaxed though, my hair looked thin compared to other relaxed heads, and now it looks thick compared to other relaxed heads, but still thin compared to other natural heads.

Exactly. I don't think thickness is something that happens because your hair is natural again. Maybe for some people but I think it's because they are doing something else or because of hormones :ohwell:

Giving up the relaxers has done WONDERS...WONDERS, I SAY! for my hair. I got my first blow-out today (simma down nah! Pics on the way! Yay!) and because the only way I've known my straight hair is as relaxed, it's still weird. My hair is thin, fine, yet very dense so it has the ILLUSION of thickness but it's not, relaxed or natural, but from this blow-out, my hair looks stronger, definitely healthier....

 I'm not believing any of these claims until i see some pics!!!!

That was one of the reasons I went natural over 10 years ago....I got tired of staring at my scalp everyday all day   Now if I had known how to take care of my hair properly back then I would have been at my hair goal a long long long long time ago. :ohwell:

LOL @ Bre-Bre

I think going natural has made my hair thicker. When I was relaxed, my hair was very thin. Being uber straight might've had a lot to do with it, but also I used a curling iron often to create a bob, so I'm sure that heat stripped it thin some. I also never trimmed it often and from experience, that has a way of thinning my ends.

I know my hair is thicker now not just because it's curly/coily/kinky, but also when I had it pressed straight, it was still fuller than when it was relaxed. I do believe regular trimming makes a huge difference too in keeping my hair looking thick through its length.

I don't know if these pics show what I mean, but if not, Bre-bre you just have to take my word for it. LOL
