I was doing some S&D earlier and found about 10 of those tiny little knots that form on an individual strand of hair. I clipped them off, but it was driving me crazy!!!

What causes them, and how to I stop them from coming back!! HELP

I think they are caused by the hair coiling and curling on itself. I get them too and I have to cut them off because they are very irritating.

I think also that shed strands knot around un-shed strands then break off. Did that make sense?

The very last image on the bottom row is what it looks like...according to this chart it is some type of split or damaged end. But what causes the hair to just loop itself into a knot

I get these too and hate them. I get more when my hair is not well-moisturized, when I wear wash-n-go's and even sometimes if I have a tight roller set (the hair curls up on itself). I get less when I'm wearing my straight.

Im not sure what causes them, but i was always taught that if you KEEP getting those little knots at the end of your hair that its time for a healthy cut. Im all natural so its important to get a good trim every once and a while. HTH

I got them right behind getting good trims (happened to me twice this year). My hair sprang back and got curlier after the trims and I started developing random single strand knots.

It's annoying but it goes with very curly hair.

So, based on all your replies it seems that we're getting these little knots after wearing the hair curly or it being in natural state. I wore wash n go all last week and now I have knots :scratchch

Maybe try moisturizing your hair (especially ends) more.

I'm texlaxed, and I used to get the knots on my ends regularly, especially after I've worn a spiral set for a week. I began moisturizing my hair more, focusing on my ends, and now I don't get the knots anymore.

I have no idea, but I have them too and hate them:wallbash: Keeping your ends moisturised or baggying sometimes helps a little.

I was somewhere out in cyber space and was reading about this same topic. The source that I was reading stated that this is an actual "condition". I dunno how true that is but that's what the article was saying. I think it went on to say that it is caused by a lack of moisture. Don't quote me on any of this. Just though I'd chime in. I too have had this issue since my set back. Since I've started taking care of my hair again, they do not occur.
