Sad Story: Why not to mix lye and no-lye

Hey ladies,

So, I went to a salon and got my hair texlaxed (75%) and I liked the results. Now, I told the stylist (who shall remain nameless) that I'd put a Just For Me texture softener in my hair at Christmas 2006 but that my hair laughed at it and I didn't see much of a difference. She said "Girl, that was almost a year ago, so it won't affect you." Why did I let her put a lye relaxer on my hair?

I feel so stupid. My hair looked great for the first week, but once I washed it, I began to see loads and loads of split ends, shedding, and breaking. My strands are split like branches up the strands. The strands are also rough because of areas on the strand that are waiting to split, they look like bubbles. Also, my hair has gone from #1 to a dirty goldish color.

So, I went back to show her my hair and wouldn't you know that she wasn't there anymore. She got fired. So, now I am trying to figure out
whether I can save any of my hair or whether I just need to cut it off again.

Moral: Don't overlap chemicals, even if you thought they didn't take.

I'm sorry this happened to you SunshineLady, I hope your hair recovers. Remember this is a journey, that is a mistake you won't make again. But you know, you would think after a year, with so much new growth you would have been okay so long as she was careful about overlapping. I wonder if the problem is something else...like a bad relaxer or poor neutralizing or not conditioning well afterwards?

I am sooooo sorry this happened to you. Be encouraged even if you have to cut it you're hair will be back healthier, longer and stronger in no time. ((((((((((((((((((Hugs)))))))))))))))))))))) :hug2:

Ooh wow!!! I would be upset!!! she should've kown better!!! I tell you, these purported stylists!! Did you try any like heavy mosturizing products or protein to try to moisturize it and build it back up. Now I dont know if this is the best thing to do because i'm not a "licensed stylist" just a suggestion.

sorry to hear that happened to you. I had been using no lye relaxers for years and then about a 1 1/2yr ago, I started going to the salon and getting lye relaxers. I never had a problem with the breakage. After a few months, i went to a new stylist and she said she could tell where the lye hair met the no-lye hair and that I was very lucky that my hair was really healthy and never broke off. I dont know if there was anything you could have done bc I didnt do anything differently than i normally did. Hopefully with time and TLC your hair will be back to normal.

Hugs....sorry this happened to you...and even i wouldve thought like after 1 year and having the no-lye relaxer grown out...even its been done to my hairthat it would be okay to apply the lye relaxer(tht maybe the issue that i had) ..i guess everyones hair is different..

but just nurse it back to health..and just because they work in a salon doesnt mean they no everything..

Maybe you should try manage damage conditioner by Hask Placenta and a fortifying shampoo...like Motions CPR or Protectiv(?). Manage Damage worked wonders on my damaged hair

Thanks y'all. :wallbash: Yes, I am trying lots of different conditioners right now. The problem is that the roughness is where the hair has split, but I can't see it yet. I know because I've trimmed in those areas and the hair splits where it is cut.

So sorry that this happened!

So is it safe to say that once you've used no-lye relaxer, you shouldn't switch (and vice-versa)? :ohwell:

I'm sorry this happened. It's hard when you are making progress but even I would think it's okay after a year.:perplexed

Why didn't you just retouch with the JFM softner? I'm sorry this happened to you. That stupid stylist should have known better.

I think she neutralized pretty well and she gave me a moisturizing DC afterwards (I had to insist).

Thanks! Who knew cyberhugs could feel so good :-)

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I have overlapped lye and no lye before when my hair was underprocessed and nothing like this has ever happened. And this was before LHCF so my hair was really damaged. I really wonder what made your hair rake a turn for the worst though...maybe someone can come with some insight:nono:

Oh no SL :( I am super sorry to hear (read) this. I hope we can figure out a way to get this turned around without needing to do anything too dramatic.

Sorry that happened to you. Take good care of your hair and it will recover.
I've switch between lye and no lye many times with never a problem. Everything isn't for everybody.

I hate that this happened to you. I remember when I got my first lye relaxer (I've always used no-lye) and it burned my scalp like crazy! Fortunately my scalp recovered, but I learned that I can't handle lye relaxers. It's all a learning experience for us. Just treat your hair very gently now. Don't manipulate it too much and definitely give it protein and deep conditioning treatments. It needs a lot of TLC right now.

This thread scares me big time...i have also switched between lye and No- lye (2 lye touch ups and two no-lye touch ups) in the last year and i have DEFINITELY been overlapped a few times... For my last touch up, i used ORS Lye, but for the one before, i used profectiv no lye:nono:

I wonder if there may have been another cause to the damage? Are you certain it was because of the the no lye to lye transition?
