I have been holding her off for so long hoping she'll change her mind but..nope. She turns 16 next week. she said she is tired of not being able to do anything with her hair. She's tired of twists and ponytails and braids and frizzyness..lol. Can she please get a relaxer..sigh.
I told her to wait a lil while longer because i just don't think she's ready for a relaxer just yet.
Maybe i can get her a texturizer or something..whatever that is..
any advice?

She's 16? In the UK she's legal for a LOT of things! I say you let her have a relaxer while you can show her how to look after and maintain it :yep: she has at least 2 years to pick up good relaxer habits.

Hmm might explain why my mum was sooo mad when I got my her relaxed at my cousin's when I was 10:rolleyes:

ETA: I had to go back before posting to make sure you said you have a 16? year old, so what's your reggie - not for the hair for the body?! :look:

Seriously though let her cause I think a texlax will not look like yours and will be fried in the trying:)

16?!??!

I say give her a relaxer and show her how to maintain it. I'm sure she looks at your silky hair and it makes her want a relaxer even more. If your apprehensive about allowing her to relax her hair, explain to her all the care that will go into having her hair relaxed. I'm sure it will be a fun experience for her to learn about how to take care of her newly relaxed hair. Afterall, look at your hair, that right there is enough inspiration for her to want to take of care of her relaxed hair :yep:.

If that's what she wants and you think she'll be responsible enough to maintain it, then it's time. :yep:

ETA: No texturizers if she wants mom's sleek smooth hair. It would take too much heat and never be as straight as yours.

If I were your daughter, I would be wanting my hair like yours too. Are blowouts an option? Maybe she could start with those to be sure she wants her hair straight all of the time. At least you know how to maintain relaxed hair, so she should be alright, which is more than I could have said for my mother. She is blessed, because you know how to guide her in relaxer selection and maintainance. I say she is old enough, my first relaxer was at 10 and was a disaster!!! My inner 16 year old is saying "let her do it!!!!"

I would let her go ahead and get the relaxer. Make sure to teach her HOW to care for relaxed hair. Since she's 16 she should be able to maintain it really well herself.

OT: You have an almost 16 year old daughter? I never would have guessed. You look so young. Go 'head, girl!

I begged and pleaded with my mother for relaxer she did not give in. I saw my first relaxer when I was 18 years of age paid for myself. Times have changed at least you are considering it. If she is responsible go for it!!!

ITA!!!

As for the relaxer...maybe she should take a look at this site. This way she can decide what she wants to do. There are many ladies here w/ long beautiful hair natural and relaxed. She should take her lifestyle into condsideration and weigh out the pros and cons of a relaxer and then make her decision. hth!

Wow! You held her out that long. Go Mom!

If you feel like she is responsible enough, go for it. Let her have one.
She probably looks at your gorgeous hair everyday and wants her hair to look like yours. You can just take the time to show her how to properly care for her hair and I am sure she will love you even more for it!!

Girl!

You look good for a momma of a 16 year old! My daugther is 14 and she's been relaxed (2-3 x's a year) for a while only (4 years) because she has thick long hair i couldn't handle. now she's an expert at taking care of her hair.

she washes weekly & deep conditions. you can teach your daughter alot and i;m sure she seen your healthy hair practices.

go 'head!! good luck.

Im with you in the hold out camp!

I cant believe you have a 16 year old I pegged you at 24 or 25.

I say try to hold her out a little longer and if ANYTHING, let her texturize it and show her how to rock the curly fro look and the straight looks too. How long is her hair currently?

I applaud you for holding out this long! YOU GO! I got my first relaxer when I was about 5 so I applaud you.

I say let her do it while she's still in your house and you can show her how to care for her hair. Because once she's 18 and (thinks LOL) she's grown then she may do it on her own and make a mess of her hair.

So do it but show her how to hold it down with healthy relaxed hair! :yep:

OT: I can't believe you have a 16 year old daughter ...girl I thought you were in your 20s! Looking good sis!:yep:

I would make her hold out a little longer until you've exhausted all alternative options. What about getting her hair pressed every 2+ weeks (or however long it holds up) with a rollerset? It'll be silky and curly just like a relaxer without going to the extreme.

I'm with you...but then again, I've experienced both sides of the fence.

I'd be begging for a relaxer too looking at mom's hair. :yep:

Im seventeen I begged my mom 4 a relaxer When I was young and I had a horriable experience with a saloon. and I grew it out I got it again in about 8th grade by my sister so I can have cute twisties and fake ponytail styles and Im ok with it its growing. but I really wish I woulda stayed natural.

All of my best friends are natural and I look at them like I want natural hair. 4 of them their hair is so haelthy andstraight and pretty. 2 go the shop every 2 weeks 4 press and surl the other to do it their selves. I think its better to be natural.

I say let her...I wouldnt texturize becasue it takes too much heat to get the hair strAight...the same with naturals getting blowouts and presses. eventually all that heat wIll do more harm than good. If she gets a relaxer she can always get a sleek rollest and doobie wrap frOm the dominicans and it comes out just as straight as a blowout IMO esp when it is freshly relaxed.

I say hold out. I understand the idea of if she's in your house you can teach her the right way....but I still say hold out

I think you should let her, but make sure she takes care of her hair(which by the looks of yours ,you know exactly what to do!!) and don't let them relax it bone straight.

I've had relaxers in my hair for ages! My mother and grandmother have been putting them in my hair since I was at least 6 or 7. It was much healthier when they were doing my hair! She should be fine with the proper knowledge.

Your daughter is so fortunate to have you as a role model Sylver2, for your long, beautiful, healthy, straight hair (and for looking like her sister! ;) )
If you say no, she's at that age where she just might go and get a relaxer anyway, and get it done by someone who doesn't know what they are doing.
I say yes so she can get it done the right way the first time and to get it out of her system. :yep:

Me Too!!!

If she is old enough to drive

Just show her the right way to take care of it and IM sure she will be fine ..

I got my first at 13 and Never had a bad to chop my hair off due to ta relaxer because my mom showed the the basics :)

Age 16--I say let her. :)

Isis made a very good point here.
