i have done roller setting but its still a lot of work and my roots never come out very good. it takes me about double to triple the time to rollerset and dry my hair. i’ll keep trying but i wouldn’t try it on a regular basis. I can’t wrap my hair so i’ve generally used flexirods my whole life.

just trying to get better at healthy styling that doesn’t take so long :-/
Do you ever try cheat roller sets for smoother roots?

This method was once very popular on this board. I wonder if you would like that.

My hair is starting to get drier faster. This could be due to age. I could be due to more grays that I refuse to dye (I have always loved my natural hair color). It could be due to falling off the steaming. I am going to cut out monthly washes for a while and go to 1-2 week washes and steaming every time I wash. I am also going to return to my alter ego/ever ego garlic scalp treatments until I figure it out. Drier hair and more shedding can wreak havoc on the hemline. Also although my little girl is doing very well health-wise I can't really ignore that her medical condition has been stressful these past two years. I cannot wait until she fully weans off her meds and we are almost there. My hair looks fine, but it is underperforming compared to last fall.
I'm so happy to hear that your daughter is recovering and will no longer need medication soon. I can't imagine how stressful it was for you and your family.

Stress can affect absolutely everything, it wouldn't be surprising if it wasn't part of the problem, but as you say, there are other probabilities to consider as well. The good thing is you have tried and tested products and processes that you can lean on while you figure it out. You will get it back on track for sure. :)

Weekly washing with the odd mid week cowashes in the warmer months help me to improve hydration, minimises how much hair I lose during detangling and length retention. Sometimes time is not always on our side or there are more urgent/important things to focus on, so hair has to take a backseat.

Just like you I don't dye my hair, the last time I dyed it was 31 years ago, I also like my hair hair colour, if I was getting a weave with a leave out, I'd have to have colour number my 2 to blend in perfectly with my own hair colour.

I'm quite fortunate that at my age I only have a few strands of grey across my head, when I have products in my hair, it makes my hair look darker, but also it makes the ones at my hairline virtually invisible.

I've always said that I would never dye my greys, I'd be more inclined to dye my hair grey to give it a uniform shade all over if it got to that.

Once again the improvement in your daughter's health is amazing news ❤️

No, I've never tried it or thought to try it, it looks like unnecessary work getting them smooth after. TBH, my roller sets get quite smooth at the roots so it's not really something I've had to think about. I was shocked at how well my last one in December turned out, considering how many years I had not done one for (over a decade). I have never had to use straighteners on my roots either.
This method was once very popular on this board. I wonder if you would like that.

The closest thing to this that I used to do, as a very easy way to maintain the smoothness of my roller set, was to roll my whole ponytail in one roller at night, I add a little moisturiser or leave in, then in the morning, take down the roller and had the perfect ponytail.

Now, during the time that I used this process, my hair would have been anything between SL - APL. I don't believe that I could replicate it with my WL hair, I don't have a roller big enough for that task. I could probably do it with 3 or 4.

I've wanted the pink and white Bella Capelli hourglass rollers for about 3 years, but I just couldn't justify the price as I wouldn't use them very much. I bought some dupes (Head Jog), for the price they look decent, I haven't tried them out yet as since I bought my two larger sets of rollers, I've only done one.

Now, I'm like, well there's not really anything I want or need to buy tool wise, so I could really just get them. I'm REALLY trying exercise self control, I'm not one for sitting around on something if I want it (I know you understand exactly what I mean).

Glad your little one is stable. Ahm, your hair may be underperforming to you, yet it looked gloriously, full and fluffy and SUPER Long from the last update. But, I be thinking I be knowing everything so, I'm just going to leave it at that.

Let us know about how the increase in washes impacts your hair and its current dryness.

I've always attributed my frizz to the multiple textures on my head, it feels like my hair is conflicted by what it wants to be, then just decides we'll be everything at once, and blend together, which is where the frizz comes in. That's obviously just my interpretation of my hair, it doesn't change the fact that I love my hair and although I would l9ve less frizz, in comparison to some mine is not that bad and I honestly wouldn't change a thing.

I'm very fortunate that my different textures do not require any adjustments for certain parts of my head, it's great that you've embraced it and have found a solution that works very well for your whole head. That's some good information for people who have similar situations with their hair.

The drum I will forever beat is that knowledge of your hair is everything when it comes to maintaining health, retaining length, knowing which products and ingredients work best for your hair.
This sounds simple and it is. But it is HARD to do. Knowing your hair takes time, trial and error, analysis and so many other things. It is simple, but it is no easy task!

I agree 100%! It's taken us years to get to this level of knowledge and understanding of our hair. You break things down so eloquently, and the detail you give, for me gives a better level of understanding. I think that is one of the main reasons your posts often have me thinking about my hair with intent and purposes. This is one of the main reasons why I am able to apply certain techniques from my past hair journeys to my current one and get great results, relatively quickly too.

Thank you!

I can see the crystallization of the clarity you are getting regarding your hair. You HAVE had your hair knowledge for a long time. No, it is coming together like a tightly fitting puzzle and all doubts are erasing. And you KNOW you are on track because the improvement [that you see] is exponential and cumulative!

I'm definitely going to get, it's more a matter of when. I have spent a grip on hair products in the last couple months and then I just treated myself to the Airlight Pro dryer, and currently in the process of getting the attachment comb shipped out to me by one of our kind members.

All that to say, I have bought so many products I wasn't even planning to buy this year, my last haul brought with it multiple items that were not even on my list that I now also want to try. I've got a touch of product fatigue, it's not easy figuring out what I want to use and when, there is so much choice. I will definitely get them, probably sooner than I'm planing to and all.

Thank you. Honestly it feels great after taking such a long hiatus. It confirms that I really did and still do understand my hair. It makes for lighter work in the present and and the future. It also confirms that many things I used to do and stopped were really working for me.

I'm really enjoying this hair journey and I'm excited for the heights that I predict I will get to achieve. I didn't buy or try any new products during the hiatus and I basically had 2 shampoos and 3 conditioners, so I have a lot of catching up to do. I'm trying to take a sensible approach to introducing and trying new products, I basically incorporate new products every other week, based on what my wash day needs.

I currently have so much stuff to get through, but I'm not trying to do everything at once. I have around 4 - 5 air drying creams I want to try, I also have a ridiculous amount of heat protectant too.
The good thing is that nothing I've tried so far has been terrible, I feel confident in the products I've selected and doubt I will have any issues with any of them. Most of them are travel size so I can get upto two - 3 uses out of them.

Side note:

The Pureology Hydrate shampoo and conditioner could have played a part in the great hydration and moisture I've had this week, especially as I didn't spray any S Curl as I forgot to use it. I hated the tingling sensation the conditioner gave me.

I may revisit it again but try to make sure that I don't get the conditioner on my scalp, which will be difficult to do in 4 braids without missing sections out. That conditioner had me feeling completely discombobulated, I couldn't even use heat incase It made the sensation worse.

Yeah lots of moving parts and the body will still process progress like stress. I haven't figured out the full cause. I did overhaul my diet at the end of last year too which can be part of it too. I think it is a little bit of everything I mentioned.

The basics of good moisture and old school Alter/Ever ego don't let me down. My hair is not crashing and looks fine, but it ain't right. For two presses in a row (March & April) it has dried out in half the time as my norm. I am going to wash more frequently and do a treatment adn steam every wash until it is back to baseline.

Yeah our natural hair color has an expiration date on it. So we gotta enjoy it while we still have it lol. I have had grey hairs since I was like 7, but I am starting see more and more each new year. They will take over in soon lol.

Thank you!

Yeah...it looks fine in the mirror but it don't feel right. So I know that is a signal to get in gear before the look declines. I am going to heed to the warning and treat it. I will confirm when it turns around.

Y'all know I'm always buying products. I'll keep you broke if you listen to me lol. I JUST restocked the Kerastase Chronologiste, Cicanuit and 8 hour overnight serums. LOL all three lol and I own the hourglass rollers @Angel of the North is about about...they work wonderfully lol.

This is how I felt about my hair when I fell off with regular washes, it looked fine, but I voukd tell the difference. The improvement since I started committing to weekly washes has been very evident to me in how my hair feels, looks and behaves.

It's just dawned on me that I have 4 sets of rollers, everytime my hair grows to a certain length, I have to get bigger rollers, it actually makes more sense for me to buy the white Set as they are the bigger ones. I may get one or two packs of the pink for maybe the sides.

I will be getting them despite buying two new sets of rollers last year, one of which I'm yet to use, right now, I need to figure where they're going to live, I need to do some rearranging, and get rid of my smaller rollers, but then they might come in useful for someone. I don't know anyone who does roller sets, but if someone wanted a roller set I could use those old ones, I wouldn't use the ones I personally use on someone else.

Don't worry about all that  Just keep giving us those insightful reviews and great recommendations, I'm definitely here for all of it.

Now I'm sitting here wondering what the Kerastase serums are about? The product I want to try of theirs is actually a shampoo, the decalcifying one. I live in a hard water area (I've just had another aha moment as I typed this). I was looking at a few options to minimise the effects and this was one of them.

So, the aha moment I just had was this:

I've lived in London for the majority of my life (hard water area), I had a 5 year period of living in a different part of the UK which was a soft water area.My hair wasn't as frizzy. It also makes me think back to my texlaxing days, my hair obviously laid smoother then but was still in a hard water area.

I think the next game changing thing I'd like to address is a water softening system, I've seen a couple of conditioner filters that can be easily attached to the shower hose, and should improve the water quality, but I'm mindful that the conditioners don't soften the water.

I usually like to thoroughly research stuff before I buy it, which I would usually enjoy doing, but not water softeners. I find it so boring. I never get to the point where I actually have models I'm interested in purchasing and then I'll move on to something else.

Maybe get the the water filter that attaches to the shower. I had them in my home in the US, before I left to live in France. They make a difference. They are cheap and you can ask someone 'handy' to install one for you.

That's the ones I'm referring to when I say water conditioner, from what I can see it will definitely do something while I drag my feet on the softner system. Space is also an issue as to where I can house the system, I know it's going to take me a while to find the right system. You're the second person to mention these shower filters on here and the reviews I've read have all said that they do help to make a positive difference.

I do have mostly white, followed by pink and blue. They go on sale sometimes. I did get mine on sale. Storage is the biggest headache and the reason I don't use mine as often as I'd like. I keep mine in an extra-large heavy-duty toolbox lol. A real toolbox that could go on a contractor's truck lol. That toolbox has my hourglass tension rollers, the pins, and my nail overflow items because I can't think of anywhere else to put them lol. I have to store them in some type of bucket, basket, or box

The Kerastase serums reeled me in. I got a free 1 oz sample of the 8-hour serum like 2-3 years ago. At the time I was already using the Rene Futerer overnight serum as my favorite overnight serum. I historically liked Kerastase products, but didn't love them enough to keep in my rotation at their price point. When I tried the 8-hour serum I realized I loved it more than any of their other products and when my beloved Rene Futerer overnight serum went out of stock and seemed to be discontinued after a year passed the Kerastase serums were ready for action.

They have cones and protein. So I will only use them the week before I wash my hair, and I get really good results. They nourish the dryness I have been complaining about like a "cheat code" and will not revert my pressed hair. The cicanuit serum is for bleached-blondes, but I am experimenting with blonde lines now because I want to have a regimen in place before I am fully salt and pepper or full on gray. Though it is for bleached blonds it has really good antioxidants and ingredients that still benefit my hair. The Chronologiste is there all purpose line, the 8-hour Serum is for dry hair. I like all three. They are just a bit pricey. That said a little goes a long way. The original 1 oz sample I originally tried lasted me several uses before I ran out. Incidentally, they melt away the dryness I am complaining about like magic...But I don't want to use them as a band-aid. I want my wash regimen to do what it should instead of relying on one product to save it.

Close up of the back of the hair!

I finally figured out why I was struck by this picture of my hair. It's because there are no broken hairs. I don't use brushes and combs on my hair except to pull hair back and when I heat straighten.

The broken hairs on my head have drastically reduce. Broken hairs are not necessarily related to my 'fuzzy hair' issue.

It may also be due to my hairs being relaxed and not traumatized from harsh products. Harsh products result in wiry, hard, sticking out hair on my head.

Alright, we are heading into the last week of March 2025.

How are you progressing? What are those ends looking like?

Have you had any epiphanies?

Have you set bolder goals?

Have you pulled back on some goals?

Have you had any realizations about your hair or your hair care practices?

How is your consistency?

Extending grace to you?

Monthly Update Series of Questions for April 2026!!!

How are you progressing? What are those ends looking like?
I really don't know what the look like. I'm back to flat twists for now. Just praying that I'm moving in the right direction.

I am enjoying The 4C Only line. I know I like it because I am willingly sitting under the dryer with the deep conditioner. And I HATE sitting under a dryer

This line has made my wash day easier and it seems to help me hold a bit more moisture in my hair between washes.

I actually think when I get to APL, I may be able to wear a twist out. I have never been able to wear one before. My hair just looked like a frizz ball after taking the twist out.

Time will tell. I'm just trying to take things easy for the next few moments and keep a simple, consistent, regimen.

Have you had any epiphanies? Nope

Have you set bolder goals? Maybe trying to wear a twist out in the fall :look:

Have you pulled back on some goals? No

Have you had any realizations about your hair or your hair care practices? No

How is your consistency? Still cleansing and styling once a week. I'm still considering twice a week but haven't made that move yet.

Extending grace to you? Yep

Storing them in an an empty toolbox is a great idea! It's spacious and should be relatively easy to transport. I don't think I'll buy any blue ones, it'll be mainly white with some pink, the bigger the better for that longer hair I'm going to have by the end of the year. I have a plan in mind for storage, I've just almost emptied a very big plastic box full of hair stuff, the only things down there are my old green/black/yellow rollers and a few insignificant things, and a few wigs.

I have a caddy with 4 drawers, the two new bigger packs of rollers, take up one drawer, I could rehome the stuff in one of the other drawers, or I can move the current rollers to the big box.
The Kerastase serums reeled me in. I got a free 1 oz sample of the 8-hour serum like 2-3 years ago. At the time I was already using the Rene Futerer overnight serum as my favorite overnight serum. It's good that they work so well for you, other than Frizz Ease, which I disliked, I've only ever used heat protectant serums. I currently have a few serums in my stash so I'm going to give them a try and see how I get on.
They have cones and protein. So I will only use them the week before I wash my hair, and I get really good results. They nourish the dryness I have been complaining about like a "cheat code" and will not revert my pressed hair.
I'm not sure whether any of the serums I have contain silicones as I haven't looked that closely at them yet, 3 of them are heat protectants, so those are the ones I'll research further first before using. I think theres protein in those 3, again I'm not sure about the others. I like the fact they help your hair from reverting.
The cicanuit serum is for bleached-blondes, but I am experimenting with blonde lines now because I want to have a regimen in place before I am fully salt and pepper or full on gray.
It has crossed my mind a few times since the greys started appearing, that I will need to create a grey hair regimen for myself and find suitable products for that regimen, I'm hoping by then to be making my own moisturisers, and possibly dabbling in making some conditioners for myself. I'll still want shampoos and conditioners that I can buy though.
Though it is for bleached blonds it has really good antioxidants and ingredients that still benefit my hair. The Chronologiste is there all purpose line, the 8-hour Serum is for dry hair. The saving grace is that the products stretch well, so they probably even out the cost over the time they last. Out of the 3 you mentioned, I would only be interested in the multipurpose version as I don't think the others would be as suitable for my hair.

Keep us posted on the blond lines and how they're working out, I'm very intrigued.

Hair is looking NOURISHED, from root to tip! Congratulations!
Thank you :) ❤️ The oils have really helped with the condition of my hair, I'm loving it. I realised that some of the infusions in one of my oil blends would act as protein in my hair that's the one with cloves and rosemary, my other oil blend focuses on nourishing and hydrating and the one for my ends focus on strengthening and hydration.

Something I've been meaning to post about all week is that, I've been so busy and so tired for most of this week until today that I've not been oiling or adding butter to my ends. My hair has continues to feel moisturised, my braid feels cool to the touch.

I felt a shift in my hydration levels this week and I'm thinking on what it could be, I'm thinking off the top of my head that it could be:

1. I used Pureology Hydrate shampoo and conditioner this week, although I hated the tingling sensation the conditioner gave me, my hair felt hydrated after using them and I did like the shampoo.

2. The bi-weekly overnight oil prepoos have helped with moisture and hydration

3. My hair is fighting to get back to its former glorious state. The regular wash days, moisturising and sealing properly and of course number 2 above are all contributing factors to being well on the way.

Let's see what this wash day brings.

Have you had any realizations about your hair or your hair care practices?

How is your consistency?

Extending grace to you?
This came around quick! I'm probably going to wait until next week or the week after to give my next update. I'll be playing with heat for the next 3 consecutive weeks, I'm not bothered by that because I have plenty of heat protectant, and I have not used any direct heat on my hair since 2019, the indirect heat has been diffuse once, roller set once and sitting under the dryer/steamer for DC'ing. I'm actually trying to figure out which heat protectants I would like to try. I have two weeks to find a winning combination out of what I have. Anyway, my point is that I will have more meat for my update at that time.
