I like this method for my high porosity hair, but I realized I need to clarify weekly if I’m going to continue.
Oil rinsing with my product layering for Mac moisture retention creates too much buildup. I’m going to clarify tonight, oil rinse w/conditioner, then just apply my liquid leave-in and shea butter mix only. No gels and no creamy leave-ins.

Maybe the shampoo have been using is the reason for my build up. I’ve been using SM coconut & hibiscus, but I think kinky curly come clean is better for removing buildup.

So after an hour of experimentation and almost creating a setback, I have come to the realization that this method may not be for me.

I have colored, fine, 3abc/4a, high porosity hair. The first week of oil rinsing was great. I loved the results I was getting, which was less frizzy hair around my edges, a well oiled scalp, and more defined curls from root to tip. The issue is that oil rinsing does not allow my hair to soak up moisture, especially if I don't rinse everyday.

I didn't like how my hair felt (slightly dry/greasy), so I decided to clarify my hair then oil rinse again. Big mistake. Even with putting conditioner on my strands after the oil, my fine hairs would not pull apart, even under running water. So then I washed my hair again, I used conditioner first, then the oil. Didn't help. I washed my hair one last time, then conditioned only. I didn't fully rinse out my DC, just blotted the excess, then slathered my hair in whipped Shea butter.

All in all, I think this method would work better if I could rinse everyday. Since I cannot, I will leave this method alone for now.

@keranikki - that was a lot of experimenting. I would have given up way sooner than you did.

I also liked oil rinsing for the first week or so. But I think my hair prefers fewer products. Maybe I’ll just do this once a month or something as a treatment, but definitely not an every wash day thing.

I really wanted this method to work for me. My curls are defined from the ends to 2" from my scalp. I was hoping this method would tame the frizz at my roots.

So, I now co-wash midweek and DC on the weekend. Today is the first time that I was able to wear my hair naked. I did a hendigo yesterday and didn't want to oil it up before the color oxidizes. Took down my twists and did the crown twist thing. My hair was manageable. it wasn't super defined, but looked good. I'm shook. I would have NEVER tried to do that before and I was able to style it dry. Aside from DCing and oil, I have yet to use products in my hair. At the next rinsing, I'm gonna try some staples and see if my hair responds differently.

Oh and my hair dries faster now. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing. It used to take a whole day. Now just a couple of hours.

I thought he was an Army brat raised by country folk from Alabama or Georgia!

He's definitely an example that one can be 100% black/ West African and have long, beautiful healthy hair.

Just popped in here to say that the waves are here and permanent even though I've dropped down to oil rinsing maybe 1-2 times a week. I still do this form of detangling every time I rinse my hair and have been wearing wash and go puffs more. I'm enjoying my hair a little more. Also the weather is warmer and my hair behaves so much better during this time. I've also noticed that my hair has had a major growth spurt within the last few weeks and the sides are finally catching up to my little tail in the back that I always get impatient with and end up cutting.

I've been mia because I have been moving. I've been too busy to post to rinse. It's also cycling season so too busy to rinse more than twice a week

I am definitely going to keep the oil rinse. It has not changed the look of my hair but is has really changed how my hair feels and the ease of styling.

However since I am low porosity I have swapped the order of oil and conditioner and that has helped a lot. I rinse, apply conditioner and let it sit while I shower. I then add oil, detangle under running water and spritz on my leave in.

My hair is then soft, manageable and not greasy.

Midweek I plan to do a rinse, conditioner, oil, rinse, leave in. On sundays I will cleanse, deep condition with heat, apply the oil over the dc and go from there.

I have a mid-week regimen and a weekend one and they vary slightly.

Weekend
Cleanse with Redken cleansing cream or some shampoo

DC with TGIN Honey Mask with heat

Apply oil over the DC. I dont usually let this sit long just because its usually late.

Detangle under water. I rinse completely.

Spritz with diluted leave which is usually 1 to 2 oz of conditioner to 6 to 8 oz of water.

Put my hair in 6 sections with barrettes and use a plastic cap for about 20 minutes. I found touching my hair to soon dries my hair out.

Then put my hair into bantus and wear a micro fiber cap. In the morning I add gel and twist it up.

Mid-week - All us done in the shower at one time
Apply diluted conditioner. 1 to 2 oz for 8 to 12 of water. I let that soak in while I shower.

The rest is the same as my weekend routine.

My DC is important. For rinse out conditioners I just use whatever I can pick up from Marshall's or Ross. And I do a complete rinse.

Both my DC and leave in are TGIN. They work the best for my hair.

@metro_qt yes that worked really well! That with some scrunching did the trick. Still a little loose but better. My curls are so small I look like a 5 year old in a wash and go at this length lol I might need a little shaping so I can look like an adult.

Hahaha @LdyKamz my hair just shrinks up and wants to hurt my feelings... I stay looking like a 5 year old, or a grown up insisting on wearing hairstyles meant for 5 year olds...

I might as well put some bows and ribbons in and call it a day...

I think it works fine for low porosity hair if you switch the conditioner and oil steps.

Random: I think this method would be GREAT to try for someone who recently big chopped or have short hair. They could start the training process early on. I think when your hair is already long and thick, all that detangling can feel tiring, esp since it takes about 2 months of training it.

I would be afraid that I'd look like a dude with beginner waves if I did this on a BC. I would have to have at least 3 inches of hair.

That could be true. I have about 6 inches of medium density highly coily hair. At this length detangling is nothing. Styling on the other hand is a pain.

Im not sure if my hair will ever be trained though.

I hear ya. I mean, I saw some ppl in his comments say their hair got trained. Maybe a lil more tweaking.

So I kind of ditched this method. I just cannot wet and detangle my hair this often. It's way too much work. While I could see my hair transforming, I don't think I have the time to commit to doing this. The one thing I will keep from this method is using more than one tool to detangle and always sealing.

I'm still adding the oil step and I think it may be helping. Usually when I put in 2 strand twists they are really dry by the 3 day no matter how I LOC or try to moisturize them. Now I DC and before rinsing out the DC, I add the oil and let it sit. Then I rinse and spritz on my leave-in, add my gel and twist. My twist are now staying moisturized for the week and I can do a light spritz with a braid spray and my hair responds.

Last week I just rinsed my hair, add the oil and rinsed and was able to wet bun for the first time.

My hair in the back is still too short to try to rinse and style often but next year I may try this method more often when I can wet bun every 2 or 3 days.

Thanks for sharing the details. Did some of it is just as helpful. I don't do that much. I do oil once and conditioner and that's it. Maybe in the spring I will do more. I don't do the scarf since i put my hair in twist.

I think it's better to modify it for what fits you.

It seems as though I dont have any Curl pattern in the front of my hair. Its extremely fine strands. But it's nice and full and curly in the back. I do have a bit of alopecia in the front bit since I was a child.
I have found that I can do a wash n go but it really looks it best on dry hair!!! But I do a whole oil treatment process while in the shower which really brings the curls to life!!!
