I wash my hair every 2-3 days (it's usually just a water rinse but every Sunday I wash with shampoo) my scalp just loves the stimulating feeling when in the shower and I've seen the most growth this way..

In the beginning I use to hear the same from friends and family and I'd explain that washing (with shampoo) this often can be drying but with co-washing, water rinsing, leave ins, etc "we" can wash more frequently without drying out our hair. They usually just shook their heads with disapproval but once my hair reached a certain length they stopped offering anymore "advice"

I've always been a frequent washer. I used to live in the North East, and when Sandy hit, I got the ultimate side eye for washing my hair when we were without electricity. Like I had committed some type of crime. My mom looked at me and said, "You wash your hair like a white girl." Uhh..what? Now I wash a little less frequently but once summer hits I will be cowashing 2-3 times a week :)

I don't wash my hair as much now as I did when I was younger (and relaxed). I recall a neighbor guy saying I washed my hair like a white girl back then.
I don't even remember what I said. I haven't had anyone comment like that in years but would probably tell them to mind their own head.

I was always a frequent washer. My aunt once told me I would end up bald. Hasn't happened yet. Luckily, my SO has no opinion on my hair washing habits, although, I'm sure he would notice if I started having stinky hair. I would think your SO would object to you having stinky hair too. Ask him if he wants you to start washing once a month like some black women and if he'd like the way your hair smells then.

I started off the year with protective styles that I kept for a month and my hair hated it and suffered tremendously. Then, I returned to cowashing on Tuesdays and alternating between cowashing & shampooing on Saturdays and my hair loves it and is flourishing again. And anyone that has a problem with it can watch me as I wash my way to waist length hair.

I think my dh said the same thing when I first started to take care of my own hair years ago. I told him that my dry, crispy hair needed it and he would see the results. As my hair got healthier and longer than my usual split-end filled SL, he never said another word.

I wash 2x weekly on average now. If he ever said something, I'd hit him with my ponytail and KIM. :giggle:

Since my healthy hair journey I've went from washing my hair once a week or two weeks, to around two to three times a week. My family makes comments but nothing harsh. More so along the lines of "if I wash my hair that often it would dry too much... fall out... too much manipulation...:blah:

But my family and friends are very encouraging in my healthy hair journey. They just always smirk and make jokes because my hands are always in my hair doing something magical!

I feel like you can only pull this off if you are relaxed though - or have type 3 hair or looser... Are any type 4 naturals doing this?

I co wash daily and shampoo with a DC 2 times a week. My mom thinks this is too much but has stopped commenting about it because she know's I'm not going to stop.

I'm a 4b natural who keeps my hair braided in cornrows or mini braids.

Back when I liked wash and go's I was. I would shampoo 1x a week and cowash at least 2x a week. My hair thrived from all the moisture.

Unless they have been through the journey most people, in my experience, don't get some of the things we do. In those cases I usually respond simply that my hair likes and is thriving with whatever it is they're complaining about or disputing and leave it at that. I've found going in to detailed explanations most times is useless.....the proof of my methods is in the results. Over time they get it because they see your results. DH used to roll his eyes at me, lol, now it doesn't phase him. He loves my hair and how healthy it is.

When I first did mybig chop, I co-washed and washed more than I used to when I was relaxed. For the first year my hair flourished. Then last year, it started causing problems with my hair. I had a hair analysis done. I think my problem was not maintaining the proper balance between protein and moisture.

After they start seeing results they will hush. I heard the same thing at the beginning of me healthy hair journey...but my hair started growing like a weed! After a while nobody said anything. I like to co wash daily or every other day. I was doing every 3 days but my hair was soooo dry. I notice it's MUCH more hydrated when I co wash daily! :yep:

Yeah they used to say that...until my hair got so thick and beautiful that they started asking for my routine.

(P.S. I don't tell people how often I wash now...if they ask, I just say, "girl, I wash it whenever it needs it")

If they stan for smelly scalps...hope no one gets a whiff.

After I saw results of how my hair grew so fast from washing frequently...I concluded in my mind that that's why "white girls" have long hair. They wash it alot. Water is moisture. :)

Back in the day I washed once a week and that was "too much" according to my peers, mother and hair dresser. When I took swimming lessons, I shampooed every time I swam (every other day) and everyone swore I was going to be bald by the end of summer. It turned out my hair was thicker and longer than ever.

I wash twice a week either cowash alternating with shampoo and sometimes I shampoo twice a week. I make sure I double up on my DC but my scalp thanks me. It was when I was trying to do the long-term protective styles is when I started to have issues.

My DH washes daily and has very little knowledge of "our" hair so he doesn't say a word.

I use to get that back when I first started my hair journey now that my hair is growing/thicker I get more questions instead of slick comments.

I am type 4 and I do this. Usually wash 1x a week with shampoo/cleanser and cowash midweek. My hair, scalp, and mind love it.

How do you style your hair again? Nne, I'm about to throw in the towel and lock my hair...

I feel like I can only wear my hair loose with frequent "washing."
The more time between my shower session, the more tangles, the more drama--- unless I go into PS Mode and my hair is in a style for several days/weeks. But I'm becoming less and less a fan of long stretches without cleansing/rinsing. And that's mostly because the ensuing drama is several hours/days of tangles, mats, shed hair, &/or breakage. I'd rather have my 5-10 minute 2-3 day a week routine! And I'm a fine-haired coily type 4, so I almost exclusively finger detangle.

How do you wear your hair after washing?
Tuck and roll or twist out. I always put it in 2 - 4 flat twists to stretch it out overnight after a wash to make the styling easier.

And against the finger detangling only edict, I had to start carefully using seamless combs cuz aint nobody got time to spend two hours a cpl times a week through all this 80+% kinky shrinkage.
