You Wash Your Hair Too Much?

I feel like you can only pull this off if you are relaxed though - or have type 3 hair or looser... Are any type 4 naturals doing this?

I wash with clay or shampoo once a week. Then during the week I water rinse once or twice. I find that my hair retains more moisture this way and sealing with oil isn't necessary.

I live in two strand twists on my own hair about 95% of the time. Simply because I'm style challenged. That said, I will wash in twists for three weeks regardless of the size, then wash loose on the 4th week, mainly so that I can refresh the style. When my twists are medium sized I'll refresh on the second week after washing. HTH

How do you style your hair again? Nne, I'm about to throw in the towel and lock my hair...

Most of the time in the winter, messy knot with flexi clip, side/Center part with one low braid, or bun. In the summer, mostly wash and go.

I personally found frequent washing to not be a good thing for my hair. The only heat I use when I wash is for DC'ing or treatments, but the manipulation of detangling, twisting/braiding causes too much strain on my hair. And with the cold weather, I really do not have the option of wash-n-gos during the week, even if its just a co-wash. I'll have more liberty of wash-n-gos during the summer but even then I try to limit to once a week or so.

I took up my old routine of shampooing on Sunday and cowashing on Wednesday. Since I'm trying to get my hair back on track, I DC both times but as I boost my moisture levels, I'll cut back to DC'ing only on shampoo days.

i just heard this from my dh today... I cowashed today and wash about 1 times a week with 1 cow ash.. I hear this from time to time in our culture.. How do you respond? My scalp and hair loves washes 2x a week

Ya'll are better than me. I'm entirely too lazy to do all of that.

That is foolish. It's like saying you shower too much or brush your teeth too much. Do what works for you. I simply wash my hair whenever I feel like. I have washed daily, every other day, every three days, once a week, once every two weeks, once every three weeks, etc. It makes no difference to the health of my hair.

As someone with natural 4b coarse high density waistlength hair, I don't really have the energy for all this lol
  • Putting my hair in my 10 neat tight wash day twists = 1 hr
  • Shampooing = 30mins
  • DCing = at least 15-30mins (longer if I'm doing something involved like henna)
  • Styling (braidout, twistout, bantu knot out etc) = 1 additional hr minimum longer if I'm doing a more elaborate style or heat styling.
So I'm looking at a minimum of a 3-4hr washing/styling session. Not to mention airdrying for a braidout or twistout can sometimes take 24hrs+.

Wash n go is not really feasible for my hair texture + length unless I didn't care about length retention at all, the fro is gorgeous but its really just a mass of tangles and knots. (It is more doable when I've freshly henna'd and trimmed though).

Washing once a week is plenty for me lol I would love to find a faster routine though, I might start a strategy thread for 4b/c ladies:scratchchin:
