Getting "The Reniece Look"???

Ok, so the most significant aspect seems to be the blow drying technique.. My trouble with using a comb attachment blow dryer, is getting it through my hair, without feeling like I'm breaking strands... Anyone else feel this way or have any tips?

LivingDoll

Yes she has. I don't get my hair blow dried and flat ironed every time I go to her. As a matter of fact, in 2012, I only had my hair flat ironed a few times. I mainly wear protective styles, and I'm cool with that because I love my natural hair and watching it do what it does is actually a lot of fun.

@havilland
@Allandra

Does Reniece style your hair in protective styles, or do you primarily get a blow dry style and protective style your own hair in between?

Allandra...thanks!

I guess I'm at a bit of a loss trying to figure out what types of protective styles she does without flatironing? I hope to become a client soon, so maybe I'll get find out.

Do you wear protective styles now? Those are the same protective styles that can be done without flat ironing the hair. Go for it.

Allandra...no not really wearing protective styles. I haven't been doing anything but twist outs. My hair is cut in layers so it's hard to protective style without straightening. That's why I'm thinking that a weave would be good to help me gain some inches. I'm on a personal no heat challenge.

I wanna be down with the Reniece look (although my hair is relaxed). :look:

I just purchased an Andis blow dryer. Don't judge me for having 5 blowdryers, but only blowdrying my hair 2-3 times/year. :look:

Lol! Thanks for the tag :)

Here's my spill on the reniece look---

Start with healthy, trimmed, deep conditioned, clean hair

Use a flat iron or pressing comb on your hair depending on what gives you the most accurate results

Use one pass with iron. If an additional pass is needed, complete the entire head, then go back. Allow hair to cool

Go light on product.
On my hair she uses joico smoothing balm to blow dry and kerastace olio serum to flat iron. She uses a Small amount.

I follow her regimen at home and get great results.

Hth :-)

havilland, are you talking about the kerastase oleo relax serum to flat iron? I am flat ironing my hair for the first time in september, and i really need some great tips. Thanks for all the info.

Yes. Kerastace olio relax serum for flat iron. She is not heavy handed. She uses maybe 2-3 pumps for my whole head.

Direct quote from Reniece:

"I primarily used the FHI on your hair. I use a Chi or Andis blowdryer most of the time."

I also know she uses a warm (not hot) stove type pressing comb to touch up my roots and edges sometimes. Not always though.

:yep: i posted this earlier in the thread.

Thank you for this thread! I checked out Reniece's youtube vid and was amazed. The results of the consumer's hair was fabulous! I also learned that I had my hair type wrong. Thanks to all the lovely ladies that responded to this post.:yep:

havilland or Allandra Does Reniece allow her clients hair to get tangled while cleansing? Does she wash her clients hair in sections while cleansing? ETA: I know that she cleanses her own hair in sections from watching her videos.

She customizes according to the client. she does what you need. For me she washes and conditions in twists. She never lets me get tangled. She never rushes. She treats your hair with care. She babies every strand of hair. She's amazing.

When I was post pregnancy and was shedding so much, she stayed at the salon almost two hours later than she planned for my appointment to help me get my hair detangled. My hair matted up after a braid takedown (not her fault...I was just shedding so much due to the baby. We had no idea it would be so bad.). She took care with each strand to get those knots out. I never would have that much patience and it's MY HAIR. I would've cut it off and be done.

I'm so jelly of you ladies that are fortunate enough to be her clients. Two extra hours that's going the extra mile for your clients. You're blessed to have a Scissor Savvy Stylist like her, :yep: whose gentle and patient.

Ok sooooo...I've been reading trying to catch up. I live in pg county, and I've been natural almost 4 years...but ALWAYS wore wigs until just this month... I got the last of the heat damaged/straight ends trimmed... and I'm thinking that even tho I don't really know my own hair yet, what better way to learn than to glean from Ms Reniece!?!

But I don't know enough to tell her if I'm high porosity or low porosity... if my hair likes cones... if I'm a 4a or 3c or 4b... do you think she'll be bothered with me? Can somebody provide a link or number? There's so many pages here, I just don't remember where it's posted anymore.

TIA!

Go to her website and fill out the appointment request. She has a wait though...not sure how long it is.

You don't need to know all that "technical" stuff.

What are those twistie things she uses in her clients hair to stretch it before she blow dries?

I just found out after reading the post before mine that they are called Sprangz

Pause the video at 1:14 - this lady has natural hair and (i'm assuming) Reniece elongates the hair this way to prep before blowing drying.
Its the same at the time 3:52-4:00 you can actually see Reniece elongating the hair this way.

2:39-2:44 you can see her blow dry technique with the comb attachment...then she follows by with the flat iron. You can already tell in the blow dry clip how straight and bouncy the hair is...the flat iron just adds a polish and shine to the hair.

I noticed in the first clip that the client has multiple sprangz per section. Would it be safe to assume that when washing you wouldn't keep that many in? Would you let them partially air dry that way before blow drying?

I wish that I could have her do my hair just once.
