Getting "The Reniece Look"???

You've seen it. LUSH. LONG. THICK. FLOWY. We all know that Reniece's long, natural hair is gorgeous. The question is: what straightening technique does she use to get a result that is both thick looking AND flowy?

It doesn't seem hard to get "the flow" but sometimes it can be flat and lack body.

I'm clear across the country so I need some tips! Any ideas? Can any of her clients guide us on the path of hair righteousness? lol

Here's my spill on the reniece look---

Start with healthy, trimmed, deep conditioned, clean hair

Use a flat iron or pressing comb on your hair depending on what gives you the most accurate results

Use one pass with iron. If an additional pass is needed, complete the entire head, then go back. Allow hair to cool

Go light on product.
On my hair she uses joico smoothing balm to blow dry and kerastace olio serum to flat iron. She uses a Small amount.

I follow her regimen at home and get great results.

I'm not sure what products she uses on my hair (probably the same ones she uses on havilland) but whatever she uses it's very minimal, and she only does one pass with the flat-iron. After she's done flat-ironing my whole head she may take the flat-iron or a hot comb and lightly go over my roots in certain spots.

She's extremely gentle when she blow-dries. She once told me that good blow-dry results have a lot to do with the overall final results. She ALWAYS shampoos and blow-dries my hair in sections (usually about 6 sections for me). She also deep conditions my hair everytime . For some reason I can never get the same blow-dry results at home .

As far as her trimming/cutting, she does this based on your needs and wants. One of the things I love about Reniece is that she always tells and shows you exactly how much she's gonna trim and asks if you're cool with it before she starts cutting.

You're welcome . Yes, she always uses a blow drier with a comb attatchment . I also think she does the comb chase method when flat-ironing but I'm not completely sure because sometimes I zone out when she's doing my hair lol.

usually on my hair she uses tresemme deep cleansing shampoo since I am coming out of a weave and then shescenit shampoo, but that varies. She conditions my hair with joico kpak. I use different prods at home. She blow dries with a comb attachment.

I forget the flat iron she uses. But my hair is fine and she uses 365 as the temperature. She doesn't use the comb and chase method on my hair at all. She touches the roots with the pressing comb sometimes and the comb is a very warm old fashioned stove comb. Usually so cool to the touch I can touch it with my hand and not get burned.

Also, my hemline is not thick or blunt. I rarely let her trim off enough to get that look. My ends are healthy and not split but I don't care about a blunt hemline, so she doesn't cut my hair into one.

She will recommend how much to cut etc. But she really leaves it up to you. She would love to get rid of my v shape, but I won't let her. lol

^^^This post sums it up perfectly… I was a client of Reniece from around 2006-2009… No one has EVER been able to duplicate her results… If it weren’t for the fact that I live in Miami, I would be a client for life!!!!!!!

she assess your hair and decides what conditioner to use based on your hair. My hair likes protein so she uses joico kpak on mine. But she has different conditioners she uses. Some more natural and organic. I don't know all the brands. If I remember i will repost.

My hair lasts two weeks when she does it. Even in the heat most of the time. As long as i don't workout I'm good to go.

So far it looks like:

1. Clarifying shampoo
2. Moisturizing shampoo
3. Deep condition with appropriate product for hair (protein, moisture, etc.)
4. Blow dry with joico smoothing balm using comb attachment (minimal product and very gentle while blow drying)
5. Kerstace olio serum (small amount) to flat iron with one pass only (comb chase method optional).

Did I miss anything?

i have no idea....usually when i am in there it is for a weave or for a takedown. her prices are on her website. reniece.com

don't quote me on this, but last time she and i talked about it, she only had two customers that were getting relaxers and i was one of them. now i am currently transitioning. i believe she wants to focus on natural hair and clients who are on a healthy hair journey. i think her goal was to slowly phase out offering the relaxer service. this may have changed, but as far as i know, it is the case.

she has other stylists in the salon now. i do not know if those stylists offer relaxers and other services, but i do know they are all stylists/weaveologists that she personally trained.

here are some comparisons of my hair when i do it, and when she does it......her flat iron is clearly better because of the blow dry dry she does. she is way more precise than i am. my hair is always darker looking and smoother when she does it, but i do a pretty good job at home with my substandard methods. LOL

first picture is MY blow dry job at home with joico smoothing balm applied. i blow dry in four sections. using about a dime or LESS on each.



second picture is my hair after Reniece's blow dry. she uses the same products but i don't see how much because my back is to the mirror.




third picture is a shot of my roots after i flat iron at home. i use Kerastace Oilo Serum and i think i do a pretty good job. i use a quarter size amount on each half of my head. one pass. if i do two passes, i apply more Kerastace and wait until the hair has cooled.
i have an old drugstore Conair Flat Iron with 2 inch plate. it works better than my Solia that burns my hair no matter what temperature it's on....hate that thing...
