Sorry about the fuzzy pic below...

Id like some advice on what to do with my hair.

Whenever I attempt a wash and go. I end up with somewhat undefined curls with a dryish look.

Any advice on products or techniques for wash and go's?

What is your regimen? Do you co-wash or shampoo wash; regular deep conditioning (DC)? What products. Is that picture air dried? Any product or gel? This info will help us to answer your question.

Sent from my iPhone using LHCF

Its airdried without any product.

I cowash 2 times a week. Shampoo 2-3 times a month. Ive started doing hot oil treatments once a month with olive oil and castor oil. Thats it.

My hair has a dry look no matter what. Id like soft looking curls.

I thought you needed to add finishing products for a wash and go.
I personally don't do them but I do know that those that do use gel to shingle their hair or some kind of curl holding product.

A wash n go is not what it says on the tin - you can't just leave your hair without putting product on and expect it to look like the picture you posted.

Why don't you look at some you tube vids of women with your hair type doing a wash n go. They'd also have product recommendations.

Your hair type looks similar to mine but it is a fuzzy photo...
I think you should definitely add a moisturizing product to soaking wet hair before you airdry and also DC more often especially after shampooing as the shampoo may be quite harsh on your curls and dry them out.
What products/methods have you tried out so far?

You should look into the "Curly Girl" method. Do a search for some youtube videos on it.

Honestly the only technique I adapted when I first found the forum was cowashing and I do it still.
I usually wear my hair in a bun. When I want to wear it down I flatiron it.

Ive been looking on youtube and it seems kinky curly is popular. What mosturizer do you use Amethyst85 ?

Ive now BKT'd and wear it straight most of the time....
I was a huge product junkie, in the winter i used heavy moisturizing creams like ORS lotion (i think they changed the formula though), shea moisture, cantu shea butter, or Elasta QP mango butter. For the summer i found that lighter products like mixed chicks, Tigi curls rock and btz noodle head worked best.
But you need to tryout a few to see what works best for you, its all trial and error!

That kinky curly custard thing was horrible on my hair but i could work well for you.

The dryness is just a symptom - the root cause of your frizz seems to be the result of either unaddressed porosity issues (high or low can both cause dryness) and moisture retention (how and how often you moisturise). Does your hair dry very quickly? If so, apply some moisturiser while your hair is soaking wet, right out of the shower. Not when it's damp or 10 minutes out of the tub - immediately. This way you can use a small amount of product with maximum retention.

If it feels like products just 'sit' on top of your hair and it's difficult to wet, use a diluted ACV rinse to open the cuticles first and then do the same steps above, followed by a cold rinse or aloe vera. You can also clarify but that is a gamble and more of a last laaaaast resort.

Welcome Zakina,

You look to have more waves than curls, you may want to try the curly girl method over the tightly curly. Since your hair waves, they would recommend either leaving some conditioner in your hair or immediately after rinsing, putting conditioner into your hair. I think the recommendation after that is to start scrunching your hair and pushing it up to sort of push the curls in place.

Your hair is dehydrated which is why it is dry and fuzzy. Letting your hair dry without product is causing your hair to dehydrate. Until your hair is hydrated you may want to add a deep conditioner weekly and definitely after you shampoo.

What products are you using to shampoo and cowash?

My curls would be undefined too if I literally just "wash n go'd".

Like everyone has said, you need to add a product to your soaking wet hair. I would recommend experimenting with curling puddings/gels.

I prefer to use the Queen Helene Royal Curling Jelly. And then you have to seal that with an oil or moisturizer.

Trial and error will be your best bet. It will take some experimentation, but eventually, you will figure it out.

P.S. I also use the "plopping" method for my wash n go's. I wrap my hair in an old tshirt after I've added the products I'm using for that day. I have no idea why, but it really preserves the curl pattern & keeps me from touching my hir too much while it dries (which is an important part of the wash n go process) HTH!

Thanks everyone.

I would definately say that any leave in product or mousturizer just SITS on my hair! I've almost never had a product that actually penetrates :ohwell:

I will try AVC.

Im in europe which means product selection is limited. I use a good moisturizing conditioner thats really cheap and free from silicone. I use shampoo that has sulfates though.

So bascially you
1 use conditioner (and shampoo?)
2 apply curling jelly
3 apply oil or mousturizer (which one do you use?)
4 apply other products your using that day (could you give examples?)

Seems like you might have low porosity hair then! You should still moisturise with regular products but your hair needs a little help accepting that moisture. :)
Try deep conditioning with moderate heat with a penetrating oil on wet or damp hair. E.g, using a hooded dryer with coconut oil after showering. Or you can use the alkali -> moisture -> acid method by cleansing with a dilute baking soda mix, deep conditioning then rinsing with an ACV mix that you kept in the fridge.

My mistake in my earlier post btw. An ACV rinse will CLOSE your cuticles and prevent moisture from leaving or entering. Leave that asyour final step, not your first!!

Zakina So my wash n go process (which is currently under construction) is:

1) Co-wash. I use a cleansing conditioner, or just regular conditioner depending on what I think my hair needs. If I use regular conditioner I don't worry about rinsing all of it out.
2) I detangle thoroughly.
3) When I'm done, I add the curling jelly to my dripping wet hair in sections. Queen Helene is my personal favorite, there's always Kinky Curly, or Jane Carter (again... experimentation is key)
4) Step 4 is what's under construction.
4a) I add a moisturizer/leave in. I'm currently experimenting with those
4b) I add oil. Oil is the most important step for me. Whether I add the leave in or not, oil is a must.
5) I take an old tshirt & wrap my hair in it. This helps absorb some of the moisture, it really helps to set the curl, and keeps me from putting my hands in my hair, which will definitely cause frizz.

That's what works for me. My hair in my siggy is a wash n go using these steps.

You wrote you flat iron it when you wear it down. How often do you flat iron it? Do you protect your hair properly when you do?

I just wanted to say I think you hair looks fab in the pic. I'm a huge fan of wild & free hair. I think it's beautiful. I know how it is when you want a certain look and have trouble achieving it though. The ladies before me gave you good advice. Lots of luck!

Thank you for this post. It helped alot and Ive been doing some research on low porosity...I exhibit all the symptoms!

Only about once a month. It seems that my hair thrives when I apply heat as long as I dont overdo it! I dont realy protect it. I just make sure that its deep conditioned beforehand
