What Are You Leaving in 2012?

1. Deep trims  I'll go to the salon twice a year and chop off half of my progress for the year:sad: NO MORE! I'm not retaining quickly enough. Replacing with regular, light dustings

2. Not moisturizing daily:eek: why have I not been spritzing and moisturizing my hair everyday?

3. Wearing my hair in its natural state. My hair will need to be stretched all the time.

No more using durags from the BSS to tie my hair down at night. The narrow tie-ends caused breakage in my nape area. :nono: Now, I use only satin or silk scarves to secure my hair. It's been about 3 months, and my nape is recovering nicely.

i'm leaving:

unhealthy practices. going to be more proactive when it comes to my health (that will ultimately benefit my hair) and choose better foods to eat and better drinks to drink. also, stop being so immobile!

loose hair styles. i was always an avid protective styler, but in the past couple of years, i have become pretty lazy about it and i have seen the issues that have arised because of it. i started my hardcore protective styling thing again late november and i plan to keep it up through 2013 and beyond.

a no heat regimen. i have been a very very very low heat regimen sort of person. earlier in my natural journey, i had success with doing twists on heat stretched hair, but i stopped because i didnt want to suffer heat damage. in order to minimize the chance of heat damage and because i dont like to put too much heat on my hair, i will stretch my hair through other methods first and then give myself a quick shot of the blowdryer to give more of a stretch. will only do this once a month (when new mini twists go into my hair).

washing my hair in twists so often
. instead of washing once a week, i will extend it to two weeks to minimize the occurrence of tangling. i was fiddling with the idea of not washing at all while in twists and just waiting until i take them out, but i know that wont work for me since my scalp tends to get itchy and dirty quickly. i will TRY a dry shampoo for the hair inbetween washes and also some kind of something to cleanse & refresh my scalp (witch hazel? maybe), but i wont soak my head in water so often while twists are in my hair. i will use the wrapping method to re-stretch my twists after a wash (wrapping your twists in the manner you would relaxed hair and pinning them around your head)

- Relaxer stretches beyond 12-14 weeks post
- Frequent Trims
- Lack of scalp massages
- Lack of excercise

*Not being consistent. My hair thrives on consistency.
*Not understanding and embracing the fact that I've found my staple products (Trader Joe's Tingle Treat Conditioner, Giovanni Nutrafix, Doo Groo Deep Down Intense Conditioner, Aphogee Green Tea Restructerizer, Kinky-Curly Custard, Blue Magic grease, glycerin in most everything) and I don't need to look for cheap (or expensive!) thrills.
*Boring and basic works. My hair is healthy and getting healthier by the minute because I keep my hair moisturized/sealed, wear twists 85% of the time and twist-outs the other 15%.
*Twist-and-curls really do keep my hair stretched and SSKs to a minimum. I like the look of a plain twist-out better than a TTNC but I can't deny it keeps my hair stretched better than twists so I'm sticking with it in 2013.

Leaving behind:

Frequent self trims - my ish is uneven as hayll!
Not moisturizing daily - I've realized my hair needs this
Rough/improperly detangling
Eating crappy
Not exercising
PJ-ism
Not using protein consistently

Being super strict with the frequency of washing & DCing and watching product ingredients like a hawk.. then eating junk and not working out. LEAVING IT.

The 30lbs I've gained in 2012... LEAVING THAT 1lb at a time.

HAVING to buy a product only to have it sit in my stash for 3 months before I open it... GOODBYE!

Im leaving behind ...

1. Not cowashing between shampoos in the winter (I started this week and my hair feels so much more moisturized )
2. Not looking at ingredients when selecting hair products (I really need resources and help with this)
3. Not exercising regularly ( started zumba and yoga interchangeably everyday)
4. Not drinking enough water or tea without sugar
5. Not protective styling enough (I'm going to try keeping French braids or buns in weekly)

@JulietWhiskey what is ttnc? How do you do it?

Twist N Curl. I added an extra "t" by mistake,!

I use satin rollers for my TNCs and all I do is moisturize, seal, twist then use a satin roller for each twist. In the morning, I remove the rollers, untwist the hair and VIOLA! Curls! I got the idea from the curlynikki.com site.

The TNC gives me much more of a curly 'fro look, like a nicely defined wash-n-go but I prefer the more structured look of my twist-outs. But TNCs are much better for hair in eliminating SSKs so in the effort to do and be all things healthy, I'm sticking with the TNCs.

HTH!

ETA: I really like the satin rollers but I may try the rod curlers in the future because I'm interested in seeing what my hair would look like...I believe Curly Nikki uses rod rollers for her TNCs...

Well i already left all my hair behind (see avi) lol
But also sulfate shampoos, not deep conditioning, and crappy products.

Sent from my phone-typos to be expected :)

Washing/conditioning my hair every 2 weeks
Using combs with seams
Being afraid of cones
Butters (my fine 4b hair is no longer a fan since I dyed it)

  • Getting touchups at the salon. Much too expensive and my stylist was starting to get a little rough and scissor happy with my hair the last couple of times I went.
  • Not DCing every washday. I started consistently doing it this last stretch and I have seen how much stronger and moisturized my hair is because of it. The hair loss during detangling was reduced by at least two thirds the normal amount as a result.
  • Hands in hair syndrome. Once I have it up in a style, I will not take it down and/or change it several times a day just to play in it. I couldn't help it for the last six months. Once it got into the APL range it was like I was a live Barbie head and I just wanted to comb it, braid it and measure it all the time, like a kid with a new toy. Now that I'm over it, I won't have the urge so much--until I get into BSL territory....
  • Major trims with my touchups. Now that the damage in the back is mostly grown out and I have learned how not to recreate it with bad styling practices, I can just maintain my ends with light dusting as needed and religiously moisturizing and sealing. I will test the theory of leader hairs and see if there is any truth to that, especially since I like the look of a wispy, fringy hemline anyway in longer hair--looks more princessy to me.:yep:
  • Not rollersetting my hair. Gives me the smoothest finished style with body, but my stylist got into the habit of blowdrying and flatironing with each touchup, and I got into the habit of airdrying in a bun. I will try to incorporate more rollersets in my regimen, especially in the first six weeks after a touch up, so I can enjoy my hair more without compromising the health and strength of it.
That should do it for me; with my reggie in place, I'm looking forward to seeing BSL and beyond this year!

-Shea butter for my hair
-Mixing dcs, if it's not good enough out the bottle, then I'm using something else
-20 million steps on wash day
-Combing hair every other day
-ORS Lye Relaxer (I don't mind being slightly texlaxed, but this was just too much)
-Not dusting regularly

-Buying products just because there is a sale
-Frequent experiementing - keeping it basic is boring but works best for my hair
-A stash beyond what I'm capable of using up within 3 to 6 months
-Protein overload - been there too many times to count
-Length chase - I'm about health first as length will come
-Inconsistent healthy lifestyle - I plan to increase my workout frequency & intensity
-Breakage - doing the items listed above should keep breakage to a minimum
I think I'm letting go of that too. I think I'm just about where I want to be. I think I like the idea of whip length to hip length hair much more than the reality. It's all I can do to care for what I have now so I think I'm sticking with my original goal length of waist length.

Sulfates, parabens, and cones!

...Can't believe I just recently learned about them....I mean I've heard of them but never looked into it until now.

-Heat :)
-Wash and Goes...only did 1 in '12 but that was enuf
-Finger Detangling Only
-Not protective styling enough(a lot more buns coming my way)
-Buying more products before using up my current rotation.

Permanent color: I've been coloring my hair since the beginning of my hair journey. I think I will give it a break for a while. I can always use semi or demi permanent if I just can't resist the urge to color.

Wearing my hair out 90% of the time:
I've gotten nice retention results from PSing. I would like those results to continue.

Wearing any style that require me to restyle sooner than a week: Low manipulation is the way to go!

1. Seamed combs

2. Heat for about 4-6 months mainly the blow dryer, I've started to air dry, I wasn't feeling the amount of hair I would lose after a blow drying session although I did love the results.

3. Not being consistent with my ends, need to get up on this

4. Not drinking water

5. Not locking down all my staples, there are a few products I still want to try before I can choose which ones will stay in my stash, I'm also using up the stuff I didn't love but wasn't so bad I needed to throw it out. I'm almost there.

6. Over complicated regimen, I've found a way to simplify it but keep the processes I like and feel I need

7. Not PSing, I need to up my game in the style department, I'm armed with wigs and YT tutorials to get me started.
