@daae you used the wrong links to post photos. In order to use the image code you need to have a URL that ends with .jpg You can get it by clicking on the SHARE button when logged into your account. Or you can get it by right-clicking the image and copying the URL (which is what I did below). But if your Fotki account is free and not the premium account, it used to be the photos will not stay up for long (not sure what account you have).

Now I have questions for you. What's your regimen? How do you wear your hair? Do you ever trim?

Nonie EnExitStageLeft

Thanks for fixing my pictures :)
I did do a trim in Jan 2012 but that's it. I'm a very slow grower so i don't like to trim much.
My reg
Moisturise with Jojoba oil and water 1x a day
Condition every 2 weeks with ORS condition
wash every 2 weeks
I cornrow my hair as a PS style

How can i mention people?

Thanks!

daae We need more information to help you out. What is your current regimen? How do you wear/style your hair most often? What products are you using?

ETA: To mention someone, type the '@' symbol before their username. :yep: You did it correctly.

It seems like your hair is very dry. The conditioner you are using may be too strengthening for you; I would suggest many deep conditioning sessions with a moisture based (and non protein) product. Also, many people are not able to moisturize type 4 hair with just water alone, once a day. I would suggest a water based, but creamy moisturizer with an oil, the LOC method (LOC = Liquid, Oil, then Cream), or a heavier water based creamy spritz like S-Curl.

Are you wearing your cornrows out? Any other oil besides jojoba? How do you detangle and style before you braid your hair? What shampoo are you using? Have you ever tried co-washing? How about baggying at night? :spinning:

i did try using normal moisturisers but i feel they did nothing for the health of my hair...also worried about the chemicals used in most hair products

i usually wear a wig over my cornrows and baggy my ends every other day
i only use jojoba oil
de tangling is a bit of a problem..if i use to much moisture my hair shrinks esp after i wash it, if it is dry it snaps more
i can't do anything with it in a shrunken state.
Thanks

@daae, you already know how to mention people. That's how I knew to come back to this thread. You just type @ before the name and don't leave a space...just as you did.

Well, @daae, your thinking used to be my thinking. I'd fight stylists when they talked about trimming my hair because it didn't grow fast and I didn't want to lose any length. The problem with that way of thinking is it assumes that your hair doesn't wear away and break on its own. IT does. That is why you're stuck at that length. I could never get my hair to grow past SL for over 30 years. It only ever broke that barrier when I started dusting every 8 weeks. I share that story here: http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showpost.php?p=10318560&postcount=11

But you can see the feedback of others who tried this (and more links explaining why this works) in this thread: http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=642669

daae, do you deep condition with a moisturizing treatment or masque? I agree with NappyNelle, moisture may be your problem. I don't know what moisturizers you've tried but creams didn't do anything for my hair. They would feel good on application then my hair would dry up hard meaning if it's also shrunken, it was impossible to work with.

If you use a good moisturizer that provides slip (like S Curl), then combing even shrunken hair should be as easy as this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCcoXph8tF4
^^The vid shows wet hair with conditioner on it but S Curl gives me the same slip you see there.
roPuffSept12008Justoutofbraids-vi.jpg

It is shrunken but I'm still able to comb it with ease because it's well moisturized.

daae I agree! I switched to natural products- stylers, moisturizers, conditioners, and shampoo. Thankfully, those things have worked for me. Some brands are only available online, but others are available in stores, too!

For detangling, I would do it as I remove the cornrows, row by row, slathered in oil. You can use a comb, or even your fingers to remove the shed hair or any knotting. After you finish with each section, braid it in plaits, and wash and deep condition with those same plaits in. This method has REALLY helped me keep knotting at bay.

Have you tried wearing a showercap under your wig, so you are baggying everything; not just the ends?

I also have to trim about 4 times a year; I try not to keep the raggedy ends so they don't cause more damage (or the need for more cutting) later on in the year. I avoided it for a long time, tried it once, and BAM, my hair was retaining. :drunk:

daae....Their are many vendors today whom have products that are 100% natural and don't contain any harsh chemicals that you speak of. They have a host of products from shampoos to deep condish's to moisturizers. If you want I can give you couple suggestions, Ill even tag others if you'd like :yep: :).
Also, have you clarified recently? I see that you use very minimal product, but it could still possibly be a tad bit of build-up.
I also seen you mention that your can't do anything with your hair in its shrunken state. I'm not natural, but I know of naturals (westNDNbeauty) whom use heat to stretch their hair and retain pretty nicely.

Also, I agree with Nonie....The first year of my journey I only gained 2 inches because I refused to trim; if I only knew I was doing more harm then good smh. Whatever I grew I broke off immediately because my ends were very brittle and dry.

As for your slow growth, How is your diet? Your water intake? If it isn't the best I'd suggest up'ing your water and utilizing a multi-vitamin to supply your body with the nutrients your lacking from your diet.

HTH's :)

Imo let go of the Jojoba and water as your main moisture. I've been there before and it's not moisturizing enough although I like it in general.

Try this for your cornrows:

african-royale-brx-braid-extensions-sheen-spray-12.jpg

Are you getting any breakage when you comb your hair out? Also do you stretch your hair before doing the cornrows? This can reduce breakage on 4a/b a lot.

daae

you need you wash your hair in 4-6 sections. i do loose celie style plaits.
you also need to deep condition weekly with heat.
the dusting at least every 3 months is s must.
you need to do low or no manipulation styles only.
you must moisturize and seal with an oil. the moisturizer should be water based. claudies revitalizer, qhemet biologics, hairitage hydrations, are just a few great ones.
when you wash use a no sulfate poo.
i use a shower comb to detangle with darcy's botanicals which gives me slip.

i'll come back later and do another post and give you my full reggie.

Vanthie
I do get breakage its not the best but ok'ish. I only comb my hair once every 2 weeks, but when i do comb it i put no product in it, i guess thats the problem. i try to braid my hair before cornrow'ing it.

EnExitStageLeft
Have you got any natural products you can recommend?

NappyNelle
i did use a shower cap, but felt too hot lol, might do that at home.

Thanks.

southerncitygirl

I used to braid my hair as you described, but since my hair is still quite short the plaits always unravel lol
i already use a non sulfate shampoo. Thanks for the product recommendations.

Any good video's on de-tangling...i've feel that i lose more hair than necessary.

daae, why not avoid getting tangles in the first place? That's what I do so that I never have to "remove tangles" aka detangle.

When I've worn cornrows, I found it easier to undo them with my fingers. If you must use a comb, then go slowly, meaning stick the end tooth of the comb as near to the end as possible so you're undoing it PROPERLY and not skipping a chunk of braided hair and get it knotted up as you try to pull the comb through. Do not undo another until you've combed through that section well. If you need to apply some sort of slip (some people use conditioner, some use oil, some use a detangling product that they leave on hair to let it soak and soften hair--but NO WATER PLEASE) do so...and once you've combed through that section, BRAID IT UP in a big plait so you can work on another section.

When my hair is loose, I painstakingly make EVERY effort not to let it tangle. Even when I undo microbraids, I will braid up the hair that is loose so it doesn't shrink or get tangled up. You can see this meticulous care to avoid tangles in how I wash my hair loose: http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=584699

Now because I'm lazy, I keep my hair twisted so I don't have to deal with all o'dat. :look:

BTW, when my hair is out, I do not do WNGs. I make sure it's combed out daily. I plait up every night and baggy. And I comb each section before plaiting it up for the night. In the morning when I take the baggy out, I use the moisture from baggying and S Curl to comb it out again. My hair stays free of tangles so that I never have to detangle. Some people may call this a lot of manipulation, but IMO letting tangles develop so that you have to detangle leads to more manipulation.

@daae, the way I wash, the unraveling is actually necessary in order to remove shed hair or you'll end up needing to detangle later. I posted my washing method and you'll see I undo and redo my hair several times during the wash to ensure it's free of shed hair and is completed free of tangles and also to ensure it's fully rinsed and that conditioner is combed through it so all strands are well coated. It means I end up with hair whose strands are well separated. By rebraiding throughout the wash, I keep it stretched and therefore stop it from curling back on itself and tangling.

When I braid it firmly at the end of the wash and let it airdry in those plaits, I end up with nicely stretched hair as you can see below.

Freshly washed and fully shrunken hair:

Airdried braid-stretched hair (no products)--I do this before I twist my hair hence the twists to the right:

In terms of shampoo......I'm going to say no :( The shampoo I use is Mass manufactured and is not all natural. However, I have heard the Shea Moisture has a couple of really good all natural shampoo's. Are you from the states? If so, you can try Walgreens, CVS, Target and Walmart :)

Conditioner: Again I use mass manufactured conditioners that are not all natural (V05, Suave, Tresseme Naturals, TJ Nourish Spa and etc). However, I have heard that the Balancing Condish and the Yucca and Baobab condish by Shea Moisture have alot of slip. Also, one of my personal fav's is the 50:50 Balancing Condish by Giovanni. They may be able to help your detangling sessions be alot easier :). (Just in case you don't know, slip is a term given to the amount of slippage a product gives you hair. Its helps the comb glide through the hair with ease.)

Oils: Wheat germ, castor, olive, jojoba(which you already use), hempseed, rice bran, coconut, pumpkin seed, and a few more but these are my primary favorites at the moment :). All of these can be found at your local health food shops, grocers and retail chains (walmart, target and such; again that's if you reside in the states).

Leave In's: Kinky Kurly Knot Today, Giovanni Direct Leave In Conditioner, Shea Moisture Restorative Condish. (Can be found at all stores I mentioned previously)

DC's: Giovanni Deeper Moisture Conditioner and Giovanni Nutrafix reconstructor (Can be bought at stores I mentioned previously)

Also, if you have a TJ Maxx, Ross, or Marshalls where you live you can scour their hair sections and find all naturals products there. (Again this is if you reside in the states.)

All of these can be found in store, I didn't know if you were open to ordering online. If so...I can list a couple thread that can give you some suggestions because I have wayyyyyyy to many to list :lachen:.

my product stash
poos: giovanni smooth as silk and 50/50

conditioners:aubrey's gbp, hsr or j.a.y (I keep 2 of these in my stash at a time)

moisturizers: claudies revitlizer isha hair cream, quinoa coffee balancing and balancing ends insurance

sealants: evco, evoo, castor, sapote and/or hemp ( i mix 3 or more oils at time and one must contain ceramides)

hardcore protein treatment: komaza protein strengthener

leave-in detangler: darcy's botanicals leave-in

gel for styling: afroveda whipped gelly

my reggie

i moisturize and seal 3-5 times a week and run additional castor oil down the last 2-3 inches of my hair.

on wash day i pre-poo with a natural conditioner and a mix of oils with heat for 20-45 minutes or without under a plastic cap for several hrs. my hair has already been plaited in sections usually 4-6.

then i wash with shampoo 1-2 times no need to rinse conditioner first

i condition again in shower while washing my body them rinse. the plaits are taken down and i run condish through each section and twist loosely then rinse.

i squeeze water out of my hair ( i don't towel dry) and section my hair into 3-4 sections. i then put these section in subsections to detangle but add leave-in first before using my wide tooth shower comb. i end up making 17-20 twists after applying my gel, that i later either leave in or do a twistout style.

i get trims/dustings every 3months by my stylist and then she flatirons me.

steer clear of any fancy tools, reggies, or bandwagons and keep your reggie very simple.

If by chance your home gets broken into and the only thing missing is your entire hair stash. It wasn't me, ok? :look:.
