I chose 'No' but I honestly have no clue. I've been to the doctor enough times in my life and have never been told I was anemic...I even had back surgery when I was 11 and I feel like if I was anemic, they would've told me or my mom then, wouldn't they have? I had a thorough doc appt a few months ago and she didn't mention anything about iron deficiency or being anemic in my results so I'm assuming that I'm not...but I have wondered if I was in the past due to feeling cold a lot of the time (though, there have been many times when I felt HOT as a ****...Idk, see why I'm confused?!:lachen:)

I've taken beef liver pills before.
Lately, I've been taking spirulina (high in iron) and it's helping alot.
Regular iron pills back me up. Spirulina kind of does as well, but it's an overall better supplement for me. The energy increase is GREAT.

CM lots of women are anemic due to their periods and child bearing. I simply do not believe that BW in particular have a specific genetic predisposition to anemia. (Of course on this site the evidence is skewed in your favor, for obvious reasons :) )I'm sure this is far more of a female thing than a Black thing specifically. How true would your slavery theory hold for Black African women...both immigrant to the West and still at home? If what you're saying is true, then the diet shifts that happen in immigrant families from any country would have dramatic differences between 1st gen (diet sticking close to home) and 2nd gen (diet more conventionally American) instances of anemia? IOW, the mothers have anemia far less than their daughters. Then there are women who have very large families...say Catholics in general, Latinos, Arabs, etc...BW, on average have families smaller than any of these groups. BW in the US didn't have substantially larger families on average than WW either in slavery or afterwards, from the evidence I know.

Your points sound great, but they assume far too much about too many things, IMHO.

Many of those other groups have maintained their ancestorial diets and have access to the old country and the old ways. Whenever I visit a hospital the new doctors tend to eagerly remind me that Black Americans tend to suffer from low iron. They never tell me why. :look: I'm like why are you telling me this, oh you're new at this. I think it's more than periods and child bearing, however it has something to do with it. It's genetics and current diet that effects us. It's been an issue dissussed outside the LHCF.

I don't think it would effect Black African women the way it would effect the slaves because those Africans were not snatched from their home lands nor have the immigrants been here long enough to lose their ancestorial language, diet and culture like we have. Remember we are talking 400 years of malnutrition. I don't really know what the iron issues are of Africans in Africa right now. I'm sure they have their own set of issues.

I am also anemic. I found out when I was prego with my 2nd child. Which was like 6yrs ago. I also have to take prescribed iron pills. I am looking for some over the counter that is cheaper and will not leave me constipated. I also had a blood transfusion on 3/31 of this year. I am constantly tired and cold. I am just trying to get my iron under control. I do not want to get another blood transfusion.

I just don't want readers running out and taking iron as a preventative measure based on the idea that they think they are genetically disposed to anemia. Iron should be handled w/ caution because for each person overdosage is quite individual. The consequences of iron overdosage can be severe. Single mineral supplements are quite different than single vitamin supplements. The margin for error is much higher for minerals because many build up in the body and aren't eliminated w/ urine or feces.

If you wanna know if you have anemia for sure and to what degree (yes, there are degrees to it), get youselves officially checked out. Take no undue risks, IMHO.

Girl you need to post this in big red letters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a prescription dosage of iron which could be fatal, yes FATAL, to others. Do not take an Iron supplement on a whim. A multi-vitamin with iron would be more than enough. Be very careful with this in your home.

WARNING: IRON OVERDOSE IS CONSIDERED A LEADING CAUSE OF POISONING-RELATED INJURY AND DEATH IN YOUNG CHILDREN.

Geez, I didn't even think about the kids or pets. You're absolutely right. I use liver pills, not the direct ferrous family and I have no kids or pets around, but I'd treat them like drugs if I did. I'd put them up. The fact that you have a script says just how serious the inorganic ferrous family can be.

Please keep ANY AND ALL supplements away from kids AND pets, just like other drugs. This is deadly serious...no melodrama. Overdosage for them can be a minute amount...far less than adults. :nono:

this is soooo true! like i dont want to relate dogs to kids... but i dun have kids lol

but one day i woke up from a nite of clubbing, super hung over and went to take arsenal of pills lol and when i went to shake 2 iron tabs out the bottle, tho whole freakin bottle dumped out and spilled to the floor where my dogs quickly ate every tab!

at 1st i didnt worry cause i was like "its only iron" (didnt know the above yet) but me being the worry wart i am decided to call the vet. i had to rush the darn dogs in so that we could induce vomiting and get all the pills out before it started to effect them. luckily the doggies were fine. but that's when i learned you can o.d on iron... never woulda thought that in a million yrs

Spirulina is a GREAT option as well, esp for vegans and vegetarians. It's a whole spectrum food and all it's parts work as a whole in concert. Beef liver pills are a good option too.

I take both supplements as I think I need them. I know my body pretty well! ;)

^^ When it comes to things like this, children and pets both have body weight issues that make things far more dangerous than for an average sized adult. In short, don't feel bad. The info applies and might help someone w/ a pet, a child, or BOTH! Many people have both, ya know! :)

I'm not, but my mom is, it could be 75 and shes always cold, I could live in 65 degree weather year round, I stay internally hot.....I told her about iron but she just looks at me.

I have Thalassemia. My hair does not grow very fast. It is very very with relaxers and very fine when pressed. No relaxer has really worked for me. Phyto (dry and brittle), Affirm fiber guard (shedding galore)...the list goes on. I don't think I can even get relaxers anymore.

Anaemia could be caused by fibroids as fibroids can cause heavy bleeding during menses. This was true in my case.

BUMPING..............

Rather than starting another thread, I am bumping this one....

I am still suffering from severe anemia, despite having fibroids removed, blood transfusions, iron infusions, iron supplements and fibroid embolization procedure....

It is so hard to believe that my cycle is causing so much havoc in my life, but I still cannot bring myself to end it permanently ( hysterectomy)...

Can you ladies( Lavendar, and others) please provide updates on your procedures; novasure, endometrial ablation, etc. and if they have helped end your anemia?

I have to go back to the doctor today...My blood level is a 6 and I am extremely fatigued, cold, with shivers, an ice addict, dizzy, and suffering from shortness of breath...I am sooo tired of this.....

Thanks so much!

I am not anemic, I was tested when I was preggers. I THOUGHT I was because I'm always cold and have heavy, heavy periods...so, please ladies, don't self diagnose and start taking iron pills and all without being tested. You may have the symptoms but that don't mean nothing.

Yes! I've been anemic all my life and it was worse when I was pregnant (hgb: 7.2). I constantly get headaches, and feels tired majority of the time. I'm currently on iron supplements, but I don't think it will go away. Fortunately my children don't have any signs of it and hope it continues that way.

I got bloodwork done last week and my bloodcount went from a 8 to a whopping 10. I don't feel weak, tired, dizzy or anything, actually I feel great, my vitamin D was extremely low too ---ideally I would like to get my count to 12-14. I had stopped taking my iron supplements but I'm going to get back on them. Ordered a liquid iron supplement that showed great reviews.

Oh my ,this is a great thread, very informative ,I ve been anemic all my life as i don't eat meat and iron rich food on the regular ,come to find out that's why I m always cold and got bruises all the time .
I also tend to shed alot of hair .

I have been anemic since i was about 14, it was caused by my heavy periods. back in the day i was always eating ice and had my head stuck in the freezer all the time. Im not good with taking my iron pills or eating the foods i am supposed to eat but i can tell when my iron is low and will start doing what i need to do to bring it up. I drink green smoothies now and try to remember to take my iron pills regularly so i hope that helps.

Im set for an iron infusion tomorrow... My body feels beat up.. The lowest that I have been was a 4 and that required an immediate blood transfusion(had shortness of breath).... The plan for me is to take for 3 months of aygestin, along with iron pills and then revisit a hysterectomy when my body can handle a surgery. I do not want another blood transfusion and since I have decided I dont want anymore kids, all of this wear and tear on my body is getting old. Even with diet, iron pills and multiple procedures to control bleeding, my highest blood count was 9.

I'm anemic due to heavy periods. My last blood count in June this year was 6.8. I was lucky not to be subjected to a transfusion. I've been on iron supplements ever since and I've been feeling so much better, I have a lot of energy.
I am due to have a fibroid removed in 10 days time, as day surgery. (I won't need to be cut hallelujah!) and hopefully things will start to look up.

ETA: I'm no longer anemic - ferritin rose to 13.2 and I had my fibroid removed through my cervix. Am over the moon!!!!!!!!

~~HoneyComb~~, what's the name of the liquid supplement?

~~HoneyComb~~, Funny thing is that I have this item in my vitacost cart! I Googled "liquid iron supplement" and came up w/ Natrol's product.

Thanx!

brooklyngal73 -- it's called Natrol, I haven't received it yet, but I purchased it based on the reviews from Amazon & Vitacost--I use to take Slow-Fe, but i wanted to try a liquid form:

I am anemic (since I was a pre teen). Even though I take a multi vitamin w/ added iron plus an iron supplement (65mg) w/ vitamin c (aids in better absorption), my levels are still low. My doctor say I must take the iron supplement twice a day but I feel that it won't help. I'm constantly tired and lately I been feeling dizzy...I think I need to discuss w/ my doctor different options to increase my red blood cells count.
