Single stran knots

I have to regularly detangle my hair otherwise they get out of control. I tangle every few days but I also have a lot of success with keeping my hair stretched in band out styles or rollersets. Now that's it hot I'm going back I bandouts

I'm relaxed and I get those suck3rs all the time. Probably because I air dry. Not sure. When I relax they seem to go away or break off. Not sure either. LOL Good luck hun.

I don't get them. Keeping my ends dusted regularly, wearing my hair stretched all the time and in low-mani styles and not using products I think are why I don't get them. This last point was discussed in a thread where I shared how I found that spraying my twists with S Curl and then trying to undo to redo twists made my hair feel tangle/knot prone. My hair separates easily when it's just been washed and is free of stuff. Here's the thread I am referring to: http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=495886

Nonie how often do you dust? How much do u cut during a dusting? I trimmed my hair about 2 weeks ago but now I feel like I'm getting new splits and ssks. I do wear my hair unstretched almost 100% of the time. So that may be the reason, but my hair doesn't coil tightly. My curls are about pencil to crayon width., (except in my unruly patch in the back which is about 3c)

BBritdenise, I dust every 8 weeks. I say I cut off about 1/4 inch but it's probably more coz 1/4 inch is only this long --- and it'd take quite some precision to nail such a tiny length each time. It's what I aim for anyway. I just try to grab about that much at the end of each twist and snip it off (I have my hair in tiny twists).

If your trim got rid of all the damage, then it could just be coz you wear your hair unstretched--and is that loose too? As in WNGs?

My twists are unstretched but the hair is "locked" in a style that doesn't allow shrinkage and strands to wrap around each other all willy nilly since my hair isn't loose, so tangles and knots don't happen.

Nonie yes I wear it in WNGs most of the time. I can't find a ps that works for me aside from weaves and my hair is so sensitive that the synthetic hair that I add and the string to sew in cuts my own hair.

I stopped getting them as frequently by keeping my hair (especially the ends) moisturized and stretched. I also dust every three to four months.

As others have said, WnGs always lead to knots for me. Have you tried sealing your damp ends with a light, yet lubricating oil?

How do you keep your ends stretched? What do you mean by that?

@faithVA I mean keeping my hair stretched. If I'm wearing twists, I'll seal with castor oil and tuck the ends into a bantu knot. The weight of the oil keeps my hair curled a bit, but the ends stay smooth rather than frizzy; for me, less frizz = fewer knots. If my hair is loose, I can do the same thing with nightly braids or twists, but I'll add gel to lessen the chance of frizz on the ends.

I hope that makes sense... I'll look for the photos from my Fotki.

ETA: In the second row of this album, I have photos of the ends of my twists in need of moisturizing, and my twists after moisturizing and sealing. I hope the visual is clearer than my words. :drunk: http://public.fotki.com/nelle11236/bbbh/newly-nappy/2012/january-2012/

I understand. That's interesting. It doesn't seem to matter what I put on my ends. They still seem frizzy. :ohwell:

I've found what works well on my ends but my twists still unravel unless I do them on damp hair.... even then, the looser texture in the back unravels up about an inch or so and curls up. No splits or anything. :perplexed

My SSK's have been alot better since I've been blow drying to stretch on medium to low heat.

It's true WnG's are a recipe for ssk's. I've been doing WnG a little more often and I'm going to do a slow finger detangling session. I'll be heavy on the conditioner and oil to provide as much slip as possible because I haven't detangled in over a week. I also agree with Nonie, I dust monthly and I cut around 1/8 in and its working on so many levels especially with tangles.

I know when I sart seeing SSK's, it means my moisture/protein level is outta whack. Usually after I do a strong protein treatment, my hair is back to normal, and no SSK's....too much moisture makes my ends crappy.

i'm so glad i found this thread. i've been getting them a lot. i cut about two inches all around because i hadn't been taking care of my ends the way i should have been. dry and wispy with a ton of single strand knots. but i think i want to start blow drying once a week after wash day with low heat and cool air and trying to wear my hair stretched as much as possible. problem is, it's the summer, and i work out. so i'll always have reversion so keeping a style is going to be a challenge. we'll see how it goes.

I have found that SSKs are seriously stunting my hair growth. I am going to start baggying my hair in twists and seal them with Shea butter for a few months.

I also read that roller setting ends for twists are better to prevent SSKs. I normally don't but will start.

Now that I think of it I never remember having ssks as a child and my mom kept my hair braided and used grease bb supergro:) idk

I don't remember having them as a child either. I didn't even know what it was until I came on this board. Then when I took out my kinky twists there they were.

Same for me, braids and grease. When I first when natural, I used Sta Sof Fro for 5 years with my twa and never had an SSK.

Im gonna experiment with grease and see how it goes

I only get them in the back of my hair where I have a rough patch. The hair is coarser and the curls are tighter and frizzier... I
