What is an Egyptian Press?

I used to get my hair colored and blown out regularly by Ali @ Yehia in Hyde Park. I was surprised that I never saw any damage, I was relaxed at the time also. I always had him skip the flat ironing though. Ali was actually the first stylist to encouraged me to go natural.

You, know, I was encouraged by an Egyptian beauty shop owner when I first BCD. He said that he loved natural hair on women.:yep:

Ladies, I know of black salons/stylists who will give you fabulous straight styles and will NOT burn your hair out. One is Ajes on Randolph & Des Plaines. See either AJ himself, or Christopher. Another is Toss on 13th St. Since Phedra moved back to NY, not sure who there is any good besides Philip, the owner. And then there's my personal stylist who will come to your home. He is $$$ but oh, so worth it, IMO. I have referred him to some ladies here before and the ones who did contact him ended up flaking out on him, probably due to his fees. So if anyone is interested in him, PM me but only if you are serious. I haven't had him straighten my hair in a while since being on a no heat kick, but am thinking about it for the xmas or NYE holidays.

Thank you sooooo much! I was looking for someone who can flat iron/press natural hair here in the Chi. I was going to go to Yehia's in Oak Park or Ossama, but I was soooo afraid of the heat:nono:. Do you know how much these people cost and can you recommend a stylist at Toss?

Thank you, thank you!

Readyone I only know Philip McCain, the owner. He's never done my hair before, though, only Phedra Price has. Let me make some inquiries and I'll let you know.

My sister used to go to phedra at toss. She loved her but said the other people in there were good too.

Sent from my SCH-R915 using SCH-R915

Ladies if your considering it please avoids these salons for heat styling except for very special occasion. It will look great but your running risk of damage.

As a natural I've gone to various Yehia's and Ossama's on sporadic occasions, but have avoided in the last 5 years.

@AimWard

Definition-The Hollywood press (also known as the California press) is the technique of pressing Black and African American hair so that it is silky, light, and soft to the touch, not greasy and stiff.

When I use to get my hair done my beautician used this technique. She would shampoo, condition and apply Lustra Silk Hair Culture to damp hair and blow dry. She then would press my hair in small sections and then later flat iron with a Kizure flat iron and will spray Design Essentials Diamond Oil Sheen when finished. My hair was always healthy and flowin when she did my hair :yep:.

There is something very beautiful about the presses I've seen on Cali women:yep:. When I used to watch Baldwin Hills, I noticed that their hair was nice and healthy looking, and it had swing, but it wasn't greasy or super shiny. It was more...lustrous, if that makes sense. I'm not a fan of super shiny hair, so I was in love/lust/awe. I thought maybe it had something to do with the lack of humidity, but now that you've given me the technique, I'm going to try it at home.

Thank you!

Yes one of the great things about California is that you can keep a press for a good two weeks with no reversion because we have no humidty and less severve weather.

AimWard, I believe the term was coined by beauticians in L.A. as the definition mentioned and you're right that the goal of a press is soft silky hair. I live in San Diego and the times that I visited L.A. I noticed the non greasy flowy hair on a lot of the women there and to my surprised their hair was a press/flat ion :yep: The beautician I went to as a teen didn't press hair like that :nono:. A few years later I found my beloved beautican that pressed like the beauticians in L.A. but unfornately she moved away :sad:.

@Love Always
Why is this considered Californian? Isn't silky, soft, non greasy hair the ultimate goal of any press? Is there some type of technique or secret west coast wrist flip that is used? I live in Cali and this is a complete mystery to me...

lovealways I'm an ex-San Diegan! I love that city so much. When I lived there I saw a lot of locs (on blacks AND whites) and many natural sisters with very long hair that they didn't wear straight at all. I lived at the beach so no way was I trying to think about silky straight hair in SD. If I wasn't in the pool or jacuzzi, I was in the ocean several times a week!

Hey there yorkpatties, I stopped going to the shop once my beautician moved. I started to wear my hair in it's natural state since 2004. Overall I think the women here wear their hair natural, weaves, relaxed, locs you name it :yep:. I really don't make it out to the beach too much, glad you took advantage of it before you moved away :).

ITA I'm natural and was curious....but sounds like that press would damage my hair. Thanks everyone for sharing info on this type of style... :yep:

Yeah. Egyptian presses are gorgeous. I'm in Chicago and this older lady just walked into my office. Her hair is straight, almost APL. It's flowing and straight at the roots. Gorgeous. Gorgeous. Gorgeousssss.

I wonder if she's Nikos cousin.
