What is an Egyptian Press?

Yeah i think so... in chicago we dont have dominicans, we have Egyptians. HIIIGH heat styles! But you will look fly!!

TY both... I asked b/c it was a black hair salon that listed all the services including this press on their flyer.

I had an "Egyptian press" some time ago when living in Chicago. I wouldn't recommend for healthy hair. They use extreme heat and do at least 4 to 5 passes on sections of your hair. My hair looked and "swang" like I had been to a Dominican salon. However, the prices were much higher. After a couple of times I started noticing breakage and an increase in split ends. I ended up having to trim off a couple of inches :(

Chi-towns answer to the Dominicans!! lol
they WILL have your hair SWANGING, believe dat.....but no one's hair can withstand that mess more than hmmm once every half century lol.

I went to a very popular Egyptian salon here in Chicago. They burned my hair. Didn't notice it until a few days later. Never again. They use way too much heat. Yes, they can make any texture of hair swing but if you care about the health of your strands, buyer beware.

What salon do y'all go to in chicago (so I know to stay away :look:)... because the Egyptians I go skips the flat iron step, just blow dry and curls with the marcel irons

MissMasala5 i was about to ask, was it Yehia's!?! everyone goes there :lol:

:lol: Pretty much!

A cousin of mine goes to Moshe who used to work at Yehia's and left to work at Ossama's. She has fine 3b type hair and he did a pretty decent job on her. Not sure if he's still there but I went to him once a long time ago and found him to be a bit heavy-handed for my tender-headed self. But he didn't burn my hair-- maybe because I told him not to? :lol:

Ladies, I know of black salons/stylists who will give you fabulous straight styles and will NOT burn your hair out. One is Ajes on Randolph & Des Plaines. See either AJ himself, or Christopher. Another is Toss on 13th St. Since Phedra moved back to NY, not sure who there is any good besides Philip, the owner. And then there's my personal stylist who will come to your home. He is $$$ but oh, so worth it, IMO. I have referred him to some ladies here before and the ones who did contact him ended up flaking out on him, probably due to his fees. So if anyone is interested in him, PM me but only if you are serious. I haven't had him straighten my hair in a while since being on a no heat kick, but am thinking about it for the xmas or NYE holidays.

Definition-The Hollywood press (also known as the California press) is the technique of pressing Black and African American hair so that it is silky, light, and soft to the touch, not greasy and stiff.

When I use to get my hair done my beautician used this technique. She would shampoo, condition and apply Lustra Silk Hair Culture to damp hair and blow dry. She then would press my hair in small sections and then later flat iron with a Kizure flat iron and will spray Design Essentials Diamond Oil Sheen when finished. My hair was always healthy and flowin when she did my hair :yep:.

I used to get my hair colored and blown out regularly by Ali @ Yehia in Hyde Park. I was surprised that I never saw any damage, I was relaxed at the time also. I always had him skip the flat ironing though. Ali was actually the first stylist to encouraged me to go natural.

@Love Always
Why is this considered Californian? Isn't silky, soft, non greasy hair the ultimate goal of any press? Is there some type of technique or secret west coast wrist flip that is used? I live in Cali and this is a complete mystery to me...

OK, I live in California too and had never heard of a Cali press. But reading the post above, I can see that it is the product. Lustra Silk Hair Culture solution is something I used to use on my hair regularly. When you use it as suggested, it does give a silky press effect for up to four weeks I think.
