What do you do when your ends or rough? Do you keep them and try to maintain them? or do you just cut them off and start anew? Please share..

I voted keep em but that's only if they're just feeling rough. I'm natural so my ends generally feel rougher than the rest of my hair but I just put some shea butter on them daily and keep it moving. I lost a lot of growth by chasing after perfectly soft ends. :nono:

If I see that they are visibly split/breaking then it's time to pull out the scissors.

I'm natural also. So my ends tend to feel rough. One week my ends feel fine and the next week they can feel horrible. I have cut them before thinking I was solving a problem only to find out 3 weeks later they felt exactly the same.

Now I am paying more attention to my products and my application to see if that makes a difference.

If you notice damage then yes dust or trim them. And if you haven't dusted or trimmed in a while then you may want to. But otherwise I would keep them.

I try to baby them (keep them hidden with protective styling, baggying them, extra DCing, making sure to seal, etc) for a while and then trim what can't be saved. I'm not natural (texlaxed), but like NNaijaNaps said I don't expect my ends to be perfectly soft and I just trim when they look split or broken.

I totally agree. You shouldn't trim them. Have you tried baggying to help the obtain more moisture? That is what I do. Also always moisturize and seal at night... Religiously! I used to make the mistake of trimming my rough ends and then found out they needed a little TLC. I would also say to try a ceramide oil like rice bran oil, sesame oil etc. That will help a lot.

I voted cut assuming they are rough because they are aged and are due for a trim. If that's not the case and are feeling rough because of product buildup and/or other similar reasons, then I would keep them. It's situational.

THIS:yep::yep::yep:

keep them.. and i use products like cones or heavy sealants, to make them feel smooth. no one's hair is 100% perfect, so i wouldn't stress about rough ends, especially when you can mask it !! =)

Keep them. I've learned that my ends feel rough depending on my products. If I use the right products, my ends feel smooth. Cut them if you see splits though.

I think rough ends are a sign for you to pay more attention to them before they decide to get dry and split. I'd say baby them using whatever methods that make your hair feel the best. If you're constantly cutting off rough ends, you're just eliminating unnecessary length in my opinion. A number of reasons can make hair feel rough such as using a bad conditioner for the first time or using a product with a higher pH. Like I said, consider rough ends as the first sign that your hair needs attention, you don't always need to reach for the scissors.

This is exactly why I stay cutting. Rough dry split ends. I cut and they go back to perfection but somehow they always dry back out and I hate it. I'm going to try nit cutting and see what happens. Try and prevent splits.

excuse my typos i hate it as much as you.

I seal & moisturize 2x a day, never tried to baggy them. Does avocado oil or nourish and shine contain cermicides? What do "broken ends" look like?

My ends don't look split but I can see where it is about to break, where it's a little white dot up the hair shaft. Is that repairable? If so, how? (I'm still very much a newbie.)

I vote to keep them since some ends are just natually like that. I only cut them when they start tangling around each other too much, causing breakage.

I've always cut them, even if they're just rough and not split. My sister thinks I'm crazy. Moving forward, I think I'll just keep them. I need to baby my ends more.

Does "rough" equal damaged or just not perfectly straight?

If it's damaged, cut it. If "rough" just means uneven & you prefer it perfectly even, then cut it. I'm not a fan of that, though. I believe it stunts hair growth because it doesn't give your hair a chance to catch up. Hair is not going to grow all at the same time. It's just a matter of preference, though.

Please don't cut! I made the mistake of thinking the crown of my head had eternal damage and splits so I kept cutting and cutting every month. Immediately after it would feel the same so I just thought my hair must be really messed up in that one area. Well after a few over night moisture DC's and baggying I found that my crown just needs more moisture because it's coarse unlike the rest of my strands. That was a year ago and now that section only barely reaches to my shoulders while the rest is creeping up on APL. *sigh*

Ive learned when my ends start to look raggedy that i need to dust or do a search and destroy of split ends.

I just trimmed my ends yesterday! They were rough and I had some splits. But I probably wouldn't cut it soley because of rough ends. I would have to notice some damage too.

My first thought was CUT!! but Ill admit Im a little scissor happy.

I am extremely scissor happy lol!!! But I say to keep them bad boys and turn your ends into the soft amd silky ends you want them to be. I think the only reason to trim or cut is if there is severe damage but I've never been one to believe that trimming every 6 weeks or whatever benefited ones hair by growth or maintenance. My scissor happiness is the reason I've yet to achieve m y hair goals but my ends are staying rough n all.

Avocado oil is a great sealant but not a Ceramide. there is a thread here with a ton of info on those:

Here is a helpful chart to figure out which strands of hair are broken:

I would not cut them if one of the above is not present. However, if you see these, just dust them out. Instead of blunt cutting so you can retain some of your length.

Now if it is all like this, cut your loses ASAP so you won't lose anymore length.

Baggy is really beneficial. There is a thread here on that too... Greenhouse Effect has really helped me alot.

I must say, if I had known all of these things before I trimmed my rough ends in the past, I would be MBL by now.

I'm not sure I know what you guys mean by rough ends. My ends look and feel like the rest of my hair. I dust every 8 weeks and practice low mani. I just slid my fingers down my twist and they don't feel any different at the ends than they do everywhere else. I undid one twist and the same thing there.

I would think rough would = dry which could mean split or moisture loss. I know oils make my hair feel hard (well at least EVOO did). I do wonder if it's the products some of you use on your ends that make your ends feel that way. I don't do anything different to my ends that I don't do to the rest of my strands. Even when using products, I use S Curl on the entire length and don't do anything different to the ends.

This reminds me of the discussion where people were wondering why their necks look different from their faces. I think all the crazy things we do to our faces are why the skin there seems to behave differently from skin elsewhere.

depends. if they are just dry/uneven, I will treat them. If they are split, then i will trim

I say baby your ends unless you are losing a lot of hair in the detangling process. I make sure to overcoat my ends with raw honey while detangling on wet/damp hair. I haven't dust my ends in almost 6 mos.

I'm natural and my ends only feel rough when they are damaged so I cut them. It's not usually a lot of hair but I don't want to deal with unhealthy hair. I cut them off and continue my hair journey.

keep em' , especially if they keep coming back

When i used cones I was be able to hide them but fool myself into believing they were smoothing out!

I have bushy ends, I have come to terms with that. After 3 trims that will have cost me about 2 inches by year end, I've just decided to do twice a year trims( and by trim i mean dusting).

I would have to add to my regimen and really stay on top of my ends to ensure they stayed all nice and smooth.

That ain't happening.
