2 strand twists cause SSKs???? :wallbash: I didn't know that!

So what are some alternatives?

@gimbap 2-strand twists don't cause SSKs for me.

I've thanked the posts that touched on some of the things I agree with that I believe can prevent SSKs (Keeping hair stretched, fully detangled, dusting ends). The point discussed in the thread below is kinda weird but proved true for me.

In the last 2 years, I think I've only used a leave-in in my hair about 3 times while in twists...and I found trying to redo moisturized twists was a recipe for knots. A problem I NEVER have, threatened to intrude on my life when I tried to use a moisturizer on my twists. :whyme: But after washing product off, DCing and then ACV rinsing and airdrying bare...my strands slid out of twists with the ease I'm familiar with. Go figure.

ETA: @jennboo I'm curious to hear if you notice the same^^ thing, since you're one other person I know who twists bare hair. Do tell! :poke:

I'm also having problems with ssks. My problem is my hair doesn't like any type of oils or butters so I have to moisturize with something that's water based. But even that's not working out.

Not for everyone. For me friction was the biggest culprit. If I wear my hair out, I choose a collarless shirt or one made of silk, satin, etc so there's no friction.

Dusting the hard tangly ends of my hair, adding a drop of JBCO to the ends at night AND keeping my hair moisturized vai DCs regularly. I also detangle with water and JBCO when I notice a few starting to build then twist my hair at night. Friction is the real debil regarding SSKs for me.
All of this^^^ except I use regular castor oil to seal with:yep:. It has made a HUGE difference for me. Most of my SSK show up in my nape in the extra curly 3c section:ohwell:. It is totally under control now. I may have 2 SSK a week. One of which I can unknot using the tip if a pin. I'll take it b/c I used to have 6 or more a day.

I wore 2 stand twists religiously from SL to MBL. Just recently I tried to revisit them, but they left me with lots of tangles and SSKs when I took them down. Braids are working better for me at this length, but I like the look of twists better. Oh well.

Maybe try braiding to keep the hair stretched while it's drying, then go back and twist on your dried hair. :yep: I've had great results with this.

Wow thanks ladies keep them coming please :)

I haven't 2 strand twisted in about a year because it gave me MANY ssks
When I used wheat germ oil on my hair OMG the moisture was so crazy
I don't know why I stopped.
Using a smaller comb does help but most are really against it and I never wanna
pull out a lot of hair. I think I'll use my smaller tooth cricket comb until I can get
my hands on a Kent Comb.
I'm doing oil rinsing as we speak
And you ladies talking about the moist/pro bal are so right when I use my aubreys I don't have all this madness because all their conditioners have protein and moisture.
Also I think my shower filter and trimming schedule has a lot to do with the increase
I went without replacing it for about 4 months and hadn't trimmed in 6 months. I guess
if you slip you gonna pay the price. But now I have my filter, got a trim and they're still around.
What makes it even crazier... I had ssks even when I was a teen (bone straight relaxed)
Back then I never cut them but now if I don't cut them I don't feel right

@Curlykale,
I'm interested in trying ceramides, and remember reading briefly that the level of ceramides in WGO is not very high at all. I'll have to find the link again. I could've misread something.

ETA: here, http://forum.blackhairplanet.com/archive/index.php/t-9278.html

I still have to find a scientific document online that tells me what oils have ceramides, so I follow what this forum says (I trust this forum) and basically do what my hair tells me. I have tried hemp, sunflower, grapeseed, safflower and many others... and for some reason wheat germ seems to make my hair more elastic, smoother and kind of stronger (I can feel the coating), so I consider it my hardcore ceramide. There are some good threads about it here.

^^^I came in to say the same thing.

I stayed getting SSKs, but they've completely disappeared since I've incorporated oil rinsing into my regimen. Another plus is it makes detangling suuuuper easy.

Yes, I second this always pre-poo with Extra Virgin Olive oil before my co-wash and the results are silky soft hair with no SSK's!!:yep::yep::yep:

I just never let my hair shrink up. I dont mind cutting them I really dont mind them at all. I noticed that when I left my braids under a wig for 3+ weeks without detangling I had a lot of them. I have just learned that are a part being a kinky girl:grin:. I will be taking notes though. Thanks OP for this thread.

I really don't like the look of twists done on my dry hair as much as when I do them on damp or wet hair, plus I wash my twists so the ends would get tangled anyway. Also, since I twirl the stands while twisting, it makes it harder for me to detangle my twist outs. So yeah I have a lot of bad habits. I just need to stay away from twisting. I appreciate the suggestion though, and thanks for the compliment too. :)

I used to wear puffs all the time until LHCF. So, I stopped because my hair is extremely curly so I get tons of ssks if I wear a curly puff. Also, I started consistently covering my head at night. So, I still have some but I'm definitely retaining more hair now. I realized my hair hair likes braids and to be left alone. So, I'm doing more of that and buns.

@FoxxyLocs, have you ever tried doing what @robot. suggested and then wetting the twists immediately after? That's what I do. I hate the way my twists look immediately after I do them on dry, so I CW and let them drip dry. The ends coil up on their own:

If the ends separate as seen here:

I just press them together and roll them between fingers so I end up with this:

...and I never get SSKs...even though I wash my hair twice a week and wear the twists for weeks on end. The hairs separate as easily as you see in these vids:

Thanks for this thread OP! And thanks for the great advice ladies! When I was natural before I started getting SSKs right when my hair was around 5-6 inches. Keeping it stretched or straightened was all that helped me then, but that meant two stranded twists under a wig, or pressing. Now I have other things to try from this thread.

I just started having that problem with my hair growth and I have been using jbco on the back of my hair in the nape area on the scalp and on the hair only in the back and it really helped.

i detangle and remove shed hairs nightly when i retwist
i don't do wash and goes anymore
i don't sleep on loose hair.

yeah, i can't do mini twists anymore, or i'm asking for trouble.

i'm not an expert on oil rinsing, but i think you apply oil to your hair and rinse before you condition your hair. some folks do it before the shampoo.

I definitely will stop. Two of my twists knotted up and I have to cut them because they have locked up

I realize this is not the smartest question but for oil rinses, do you just put hot oil in your hair and rinse it out?

Steps for oil rinsing:

1) Shampoo (if you're cowashing, just wet your hair really well.)

2) Rinse shampoo out.

3) Rub oil onto your hair and massage it in. Let sit for two minutes or so.

4) Rinse out oil (make sure you rinse well!)

5) Condition

Play around with different amounts of oil. Some members have success with handfuls of oil and others (like me! :) ) have success with much smaller amounts.

For me they do, now I do braids. Takes longer, but they also last longer.

When my hair was shorter twists worked just fine, as it got longer ssk started developing. After wearing my hair loose for a while (a type 4 no-no to most) my ssk lessened. Decided it might have been the twists & started with braids. My shed hairs slide out easier when I undo braids than they did with twists.

I credit the use of oil throughout my hair while it's wet for minimizing my SSKs, particularly castor oil.

This thread is right on time! I will say that a hard protein is my lifesaver, as my mushy over moist hair seems to knot very easily, I co wash frequently so I'm trying to incorporate aphogee like a good girl... So with this oil rinsing is it a daily thing or weekly... Ect?

Sn: two strand twists knot my hair like nothing else!!! Ugh!!

stopped two strand twisting

say it ain't so! i started getting them a lot recently, and the only think different is that my hair is longer (but i have INCREDIBLE shrinkage), and i've been wigging it up a lot this year. i think because i'm wearing wigs more often, i'm not applying oils to my hair as much, so it's drier and shrivels up upon itself a lot more when i DO wash and condition. i will definitely start oil rinsing and prepooing to see if that makes a difference. i just spent a night doing a full trim all over to rid my head of them.

this thread definitely is right on time for me. thank you ladies!
