Small Rant on Natural hair discrimination

Before I went on vacation I went to a hair school to get a simple rod set done...

So I get there, I had already washed my hair and I had deep conditioner on under a plastic cap and scarf. So as soon as I get in they asked me what I was getting done so I can pay before they do the work. So the girl goes to wash out my hair... once I get back to the chair the instructor walks up to me, touches my hair, turns her nose up, and says "oh you didn't tell me you had the natural hair." (She is so lucky I know Jesus now) :perplexed

O.K first of all I called ahead the prior day and requested a student who had experience with natural hair, so I don't know how they wouldn't know.

What really upset me is the mentality of the woman...Why on earth would I have to notify you that my hair is the same way as when it grows out of my scalp? Wouldn't it make more sense for you to be notified if someone has chemically altered their hair? So sorry my hair is as God created it!!
All the more reason for me to continue doing my own hair from now on!

Sorry for the rant....I had to get it off my chest. Any other ladies have similar stories when dealing with salons and such?

The natural hair?....that's kinda funny...as if it is its own entity or a disease like "the clap" or "the croup"...I'm sorry girl I feel your plight but people are funny to me...sometimes you got to laugh to keep from killing.

I remember getting my hair done at two different salons (one was dominican in the Bronx and damn did she complain), got the service I asked for and was charged extra for having natural-ish hair. But thats life, people will cry, complain and charge you extra for any inconvenience to themselves. Oh I have to stay here an extra 30 mins to detangle your nappy hair well thats an extra 5+ dollars.

Another time, I was at a dominican salon, the lady kept going on and on about a Brazilian Keratin Treatment(after my 30th NO THANKS) and shoving the bottle in my face as if I couldn't take a hint.

I guess we're in the f'in special Olympics

Yep they do it all the time. Went to Supercuts when I was natural and MBL. I wanted a hair cut; tired of my hair. All while I was there this one girl was quick on her feet one customer after the next. SOOOOO, when it got to my name she wanted to sweep the shampoo area while mumbling to the other girl to do the cut. I thought it was so tacky the whispering. Like really. I got a great cut from the one who took it and she got a great tip, Didn't go back for a while and had a guy do it when I did. Really hate the actions of some but that is that Ni double ger behavior. Ignorant.

That is disgusting. I would make a formal complaint to the school administration. I don't tolerate that kind of behavior regardless of how I wear my hair.

I had braids in once for 4 months and went to the salon for a touch up. The stylist complained and complained that I had not detangled enough before sitting in her chair. I went right to the owner and let her know what happened and that I was leaving. The owner quickly assigned me to someone else assuring that I would not have that problem again. I guess she didn't want the shop to be bad mouthed or to see money walk out the door. The new stylist did a great job and I tipped her hansomely.

We just cannot continue to reward negative behavior.

When you asked did they know how to do natural hair, they probably that you meant "real hair". For some reason ppl who don't wear weaves are started to call their hair natural. Really odd.

This is actually why I no longer go to Dominican salons.

My hair is just texturized and the last time I went to a Dominican Salon, the hair dresser looked at me like "how am I going to roller set this?"

I had to explain to her that- no, I am not natural and yes, I rollerset my hair weekly- it's not rocket science.

Your hair doesn't even have to be natural- but let them see some texture- some curl-and they tend to be dumbfounded. Like it is such a treacherous task to style/manage hair that isn't stick straight.

If someone said that to me, i would quickly walk out ..hair wet & all:lol:

That's really odd. So how else are we supposed to describe our hair? "I don't have a weave or a relaxer NATURAL hair...canyoudoit?"

To some, you can say you are natural, but they still don't expect any texture in it. The last thing that comes to mind is afro-textured hair. I think they expect hair heat trained or damaged in some sort of way. You must be coming in for a relaxer or BKT.

I explained in detail that I had to intention of putting chemicals in my hair. My stylist text messages me a couple times a month and leaves me voicemails about her "new keratin treatment." They just can't wrap their head around the fact that some people like their hair the way it is.

I went to a school a few months ago when I was still natural. I called, said I was natural and was there anyone there who could do it. The girl said she was sure there was. I was going in for a wash and straightening. The girl who did my hair did an awesome job, she was latina. Most of the girls there were black and were just watching. Once she finished she got lots of compliments, cause they didn't think she could do it.

That's so shameful, I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. I hope it was no one at my school. Please feel free to come and see me whenever you like. I get SO excited when someone with natural hair comes into my salon (frankly, I get excited when any of my people come into the salon, there aren't many of us in the neighborhood). And if you had come in with deep conditioner in your hair!? I would've been smiling from ear to ear for being so proud of you and your haircare (sorry about the grammar on that one, lol).

I usually spend most of my time lecturing people about their awful haircare and pleading with them to stop flat ironing, blow drying and relaxing bone straight. You're always welcome in my chair.... even if you do insist on flat ironing, blow drying and relaxing bone straight. sigh.

^^^^That is too funny. LOL they were looking like

Similar to when I went to the salon and the gentlemen gave me a doobie LOL. All the other gals (Yte) were like what is a Doo B . I tried to explain. Then a (Yte) guy came and gave me a slamming doobie, I just got a lot of oohs and ahhhs LOL. It was cute.

I'd get the looks when I worked in the salon like, she can't do hair, like my height, weight or looks have anything to do with me doing hair. Once they saw my work they were like I am next.

I had found a cute short style that I wanted my hair cut into when I had my relaxed ends cut off like a longer pixie style. At the time my stylist had moved. So, my cousin told me to go to the local hair school. I also called and asked in advance they asked lots of questions and I gave lots of details about my hair (transitioned want relaxed ends cut off blah blah) and what style I wanted. I was told to come the next day and ask for a particular student. I came in a bun. When I. Got there the stylist washed and I had an extremely similar experience. The director/owner whatever came in and said I couldn't get my hair cut that way because the model in the picture was relaxed and I wasn't. And that it was probably a weave she was wearing and my texture was not nice like this weave. Also, my hair will never lay down like that even when its straightened cause its just "natural". I was speechless........then before I could form a word she walked out. I got up and told the stylist I'd be back. I told the owner that my hair was half natural half relaxed and my natural hair straightens just as nice as my relaxed hair that she was ridiculous and that I was leaving. Which I surely did! I pulled my hair back in a pony paid the stylist for the wash and told the owner that I would not recommend her to any of my "natural" friend and walked out. Of course I had heck detangling by the time I got home but it was worth it. I later went to SuperCuts and the stylist cut and styled my hair almost exactly as the picture. That is that!
