Can gel eventually have a negative effect on hair?

Sunday night while prepping my hair for a wash and go, I noticed that I was raking ridiculous amounts of gel through my hair:look: ( I never used gel before in my life so what's crazy to me may actually be normal) I looked at the back of my ecostyler gel and the ingredients didn't look too scary. But I had to question whether using gel would eventually have an effect?

Can anyone testify to this?

I don't believe it penetrates the strands. Been using Eco Styler for over a year and have nothing but love for it. I don't comb get out of my hair, I always rinse it out.

Depends. A lot of gels can dry your hair out terribly. Also, be careful not to put too much stress on your hair once the gel has dried. That can cause breakage.

Other gels are actually pretty moisturizing. I've never used Eco Styler gel, but it's a favorite around here. I only use gel on my edges and I used Hairveda Whipped Gelly, which is more like a cream with hold.

I want to know too but I've been mixing castor oil and Vo5 into my Ecostyler to at least make it moisturizing.

i've been using ifantasia ic sparkle lites clear gel since this past winter and my hair has been fine. i mixed evco for winter cause of its high glycerin content so it wouldn't dry my tresses out.

The video provides no information just a viewpoint with no supporting information. The products listed dont support the breakage theory. Im going to leave it at that.

The ingredients she lists have nothing to do with breakage...even if an ingredient really did cause cancer - that would have to be absorbed through your scalp, and would not have anything to do with breakage.

The main way gel can cause breakage is due to drying ingredients like Solitude said, such as SD Alcohol, glycerin in low dew points, or gels that are high in protein. Some people have issues with the PVP in gels, but not everyone. The only issue I have with Eco Styler is the protein - I can't use it everyday because of potential protein overload.

I used Eco Styler Gel today after I condition washed my hair to make my new growth curly (i'm relaxed). I pulled my hair back (not too tight lol) into a bun clipped together with Good Hair Days Pins. I really like the look and texture it gives my hair.

I really hope it doesn't cause damage because I'm going to do this 1-2x per week until I decide to relax again, if I don't decide to transition to natural.

:lick: I love this gel. I only put gel on my edges. dunno how it would affect the ends and the length of the hair so :bump:

It can dry out your hair so make sure to wet it before combing after the gel has been in a while. Also don't be too heavy handed. Try evoo under the gel if your hair feels hard

How about using flax seed gel? You can even add some aloe vera gel & shea butter to make it moisturizing. The best part is that its cheap. I get a pretty large container from the farmers market for under 2 bucks and it lasts a long time.(Seeds not the gel) The downside is you have to make it yourself but it's pretty simple. Just add hot water and strain. There are plenty of YouTube tutorials although some people sell it as well. You could try etsy.com
