Explain your viewpoint
Or can you not think of anything of substance as a rebuttal?
I'm about to give you a backhanded compliment.
Your straightened hair looks nice (full/thick, nice length)
But your natural hair (the way it grew out of your head without the chemicals) was the biz-NASS and runs circles around your hair now (yes, i've seen pics).
I respect your opinion. I see it this way. Some people may prefer skirts and think skirts look better on women than pants do. Some women only wear pants and hate skirts. Some hate skirts and only wear pants. Some people wear both and love each one equally or some people just dont care either way. Is anyone "right?" No. Its a choice and what one prefers. We can say that society influences people to think whatever way we wish to in this pants/skirt example, but at the end of the day people do what THEY want to do for WHATEVER the reason. Does that make one better than the other? Is one more enlightened than the other?I'm about to give you a backhanded compliment.

I say all that to say that it has been my observation and humble opinion that black women simply tend to look better with highly textured hair. I think many black women are beginning to see that and are moving away from the straight looks that aren't characteristic of their hair anyway. I don't think wearing one's own hair the way it grows out of your head has lots to do with being militant or self-righteous. To assume so speaks volumes about how we are conditioned to prefer straight hair and in turn find it odd (or militant or self righteous, or fetish-ish) when folks actually like and prefer the look of their own kinky hair. There always has to be some ulterior motive as to why blacks prefer and wear their textured hair, like something must be wrong or we must hold an extreme mindset for us to prefer the hair the way it grows out of our own heads.
LOL.
If you can't make that simple parallel (or choose to not see it), then there really is no need for me to delve in further about this with you![]()
If one is all about being natural and relaxer free, how come they are the same ones shaving their legs, bleaching their hair color, wearing makeup, eating processed and genetically modified foods, getting long acrylic nails done, whitening their teeth etc. Nature didn't intend for us to have silky smooth skin or eagle claw nails. We all modify our "natural" selves all the time. Hair is only one aspect. Get over it![]()
@jennboo...With everything you said up in this thread today... You would have just been better off simply saying "Beyonce." And left it at that. Smh.
That's a low blow. And subjective anyhow. I (and many others) think @~Sparklingflame~'s hair is beautiful. But what does HER hair have to do with anything![]()
I went natural after being relaxed for...ever. I didn't have a time where I remembered being natural.
I don't understand the bravery and fearlessness that is supposed to come with NOT getting a perm. Like you have to have a psycological evaluation to go natural or something. There were plenty of days before hair boards that I caught flack for having unhealthy relaxed hair.
I also don't get why people seem up in arms about the fact that most people prefer what they have known the majority of their lives. To a person that has only dealt with new growth the idea of dealing with a head full of long kinky curly hair can seem intimidating as hell and might not be something they want to deal with. Especially a person that maybe wears their hair straight 90% of the time anyways.
I don't want to sit here and act like I don't know our history, but honestly this never ending circle jerk has to end sometime. I don't gain an additional 3 inches each year for trying to convert anyone and it's no hair off of my head if someone chooses to relax.
This argument is played and makes no sense, and i cringe when grown, 'educated' people use this to deflect from the real issue.
Wearing your hair sans caustic chemicals is not necessarily an indication that anyone wants to be of the earth or organic. You are missing the point. It's an indication that folks are comfortable with and like their natch hair so much so that they don't feel the need to subscribe to the dominant groups aesthetic preferences. What does wearing deodorant or eating mcdonald's have to do with feeling comfortable enough to not try (consciously and subconsciously) to emulate another race?
Not everyone can handle it or wants to..hence relaxers...
How was it a low blow? If anything, she should take the compliment and run with it as i am essentially saying that .....![]()
In that case, dark skin is not for everyone either.
...............
this natural v. relaxed hair thing is so ridiculous
i love all hair thats healthy esp. when its long...regardless of wether its relaxed natural texlaxed watevr...with that said i cannot stand it when naturals find out im relaxed and start preaching about how i have "self hate" and how i should accept my natural texture&stop being insecure..blahblehblah-freaking-blaaaah...
first of all youve been natural for 2wks, ive only been relaxed for 2yrs so i dont really think i have a problem accepting my natural texture.i know my texture[4a in the back,3c in the middle&front] and i know what products work for my natural hair[beyond the zone noodlehead, mane&tail,i hated KCCC..],you my friend just discovered your natural hair 2weeks ago if anything maybe i should give you advice.
second of all just because im relaxed doesnt mean im insecure.I was natural at the time when pretty much nobody was natural and people would make fun of my hair all the time saying how nappy it was and how i needed a perm and how my hair isnt the "good" kind therefore i shouldnt be natural.so trust me i dont think im insecure at all.
All the natural ladies i see on this board have beauuutiful hair however in real life[esp.at school] the naturals i see dont even compare to the ladies on the board most of them have dry thirsty twa's thats just helplessly screaming "DEEP CONDITION!"....and i could also say the same thing for the relaxed heads i see in real life also
the point is its just freaaking hair.like seriously whether its relaxed or natural...its juuust hair.some of you people are more concerned about hair then you are about your own health to the point where some would rather not exercise because they dont want to sweat&mess up their hair.oh trust, some of yall will set aside time to do your hair but wont even set aside time to workout.and then you go on the health forum and complain about how you gained 20lbs this year and how you needa start incoorporating a "healthy body journey" along with your "healthy hair journey"....ahhh crap i think im rambling a bit..i got a little off topic...dont mind me...carry on lol
these threads always go the same way. I know exactly what will be said already.
"well....i think everyone can be natural. heat train if you wanna."
"It's just hair, guys. I shave mine whenever I feel like."
"y'all nappy *****s shave y'all legs, so don't try me, playa."
i'm waiting for: "Well, y'all be rocking them twistouts soooo...."
and more "self hate" rhetoric.
Disclaimer: I have no opinion to share. Just pointing out how we always repeat the SAME LINES.
AlliCat;13256829[B said:][/B]So then why is it that many women who love their "natch" hair have so many difficulties with it? Because we ALL have difficulties with our hair whether relaxed or natural so your portrayal of natural hair being easy and care-free is not realistic.
And the fact that you believe women who relax their hair are trying to emulate another race. I can't.
Who are you that anyone even cares about your opinion? Especially when it's unsolicited and negative. Girl bye.
Wont, what? Im just curious.Black: What do you mean?
Who said folks don't have 'difficulties' with their hair? Some natural heads do and make it a point to shout it out from the rooftops "(I can't detangle my own hair, it never looks right when i try to straighten it or wear it curly, etc"). I will say though that for ME, my natural hair IS easy and care-free so that is a realistic assertion in regards to my hair
Red: I don't think it's a totally conscious thing. But let's be real, remove yourself from the emotionality of it all (as i know this is a tough topic) and think logically about the events played out in our history in reference to colonialism, jim crow, beauty ideals, etc. Instead of writing "i can't" perhaps "i wont" is a better summation of what you feel about the topic.
