I tried it this week and I've been having same problem as OP. I'm going to assume it's the use of glycerin, although it's close to the bottom of list. I've been using as a leave in with aloe Vera gel..and I was also thinking maybe I need to pair it with something else as he condish also has a significant amount of aloe Vera gel *shrug* I'm still testing...lol

yeah i was thinking that too...because elle's shine n define was thick and buttery, but then someone on the forum was asking was shine n define supposed to be juicy because hers was :ohwell:

i've never tried the honey hemp though. but i'll probably get a sample size when i order some things just to try it out.

iri... you know when you get a crunchy, that's not necessarily a BAD crunchy... but an unintended crunchy nevertheless???? cool for twist outs... bad if you want your hair to be waving-N-behaving??? or just moving for that matter:nono:

anything with aloe vera as a leave-in makes my hair crunchy. This was no exception.
hmmmm i'll read the ingredients

I live by aloe vera juice (my first hair love)

but yes, as you've mentioned, Aloe vera gel does give me the crunch

I sat under the steamer to soften it up.... 1 hour later CRUNCH CITY

lol yeah i know what you mean lol...like you spritzed it or something lol...but it also could be the aloe...my hair loves aloe, but aloe juice is high up in giovanni direct leave -in and alot of ppl say it makes their hair hard/crunchy...i never had that problem though. and i also liked aohsr too.

I thought it was a rinse out conditioner. I wouldnt leave it in or dc with it. I just use it for co washes and a final rinse after my protein dc's

"A creamy rinse-out conditioner has been an often-requested product at Oyin. We are very proud of the Honey-Hemp Conditioner - a penetrating, silky blend enriched with aloe vera gel, hemp oil, honey, and hydrolyzed silk protein, it's got nice detangling slip and serious moisturizing power. It rinses cleanly and also makes a nice pre-shampoo deep conditioning treatment. It can even be used as a creamy, nourishing leave-in!"

they say you can leave it in...but thehairlab maybe its the protein thats causing the crunch?

In my experience, silk protein doesn't cause hardness / crunchiness, it leaves hair silky and moisturised.

I was having the same problem. I thought it was just me. I haven't used it for a couple of weeks. I really want to like it.....maybe using less of it will work, or mixing it with castor oil.

I used my previous bottle on myself as a leave in (worked good for that), however I recently used some in my stash as a deep conditioner on my neice and husband's hair. It gave them really nice results, very soft moisturized hair afterwards. Just to note, this is an unopened bottle I've had for a while, probably close to a year.

It's the best conditioner around! I love Oyin Honey Hemp for cowashing, a leave-in and a deep conditioner under the steamer.

Oyin suggests applying it before getting in the shower so that the steam will allow it to penetrate your hair and then you should rinse. They also suggest applying "sealant" as in the shine&define or burnt sugar pomade over it. In these colder months, I don't think using it as a leave in would be a great idea. I co wash with the honey hemp, rinse it, then apply my qhemet burdock root butter cream. My hair is SUPER soft with a lite sheen that I love. This was lasts me for like 3-4 days. It definitely needs to be paired with something during this time of the year.

Good info to know! i was thinking that using it as a leave in would probably be better for warmer months as well. I'm going to try it as a rinse out and a DC today as I'm going to Henna my hair.

Definitely! It has two well know humectants, honey and glycerin, and the dry fall/winter air does not work well with them.

From Oyin's Blog
we’ve been getting emails lately from people who are terrified of using glycerin-containing products during the winter. apparently, there is a nasty rumor going around that products containing glyerin + winter weather, automatically equals dry hair. we actually addressed this issue about a year ago in episode 3 of our podcast, suggesting that using just before a [warm, steamy] shower was a great way to ‘winterize’ your use of humectant products. but just in case you missed it, here are some more bullet points to consider. :o)

1. glycerin is a humectant, which means that it attracts moisture to itself. in a humid environment it helps your hair to attract and retain moisture.

2. in an environment with zero humidity (a desert climate) some worry that the glycerin can pull moisture out of your hair, b/c there’s none in the air and the hungry hungry glycerin wants some water, at any cost!!

3. all of our products which contain glycerin, also contain water. so there is water within the product available to the glycerin, and all of it helps your hair to remain hydrated. if you are using other glycerin-containing products or making your own, one thing to watch would be to ensure that they contain water as well.

4. to ‘winterize’ or ‘desert-friendly’ your use of humectants, one simple idea is to use the product before a shower. the mist and steam of the shower will be attracted to the glycerin in the products, and the heat will help it absorb into your cuticle. then you can use an oil-based sealer to keep that moisture in when you go out into the harsh, harsh world.

5. in many climates, the winter is less humid than the summer, but this is not necessarily the case everywhere. many oyin honeys have zero problems using our humectant sprays or other glycerin containing products throughout the year – the thing to watch is the humidity level, more so than the temperature. don’t assume you can’t use a product in the winter just b/c it contains glycerin – experiment with using it under different conditions and let your hair tell you what it likes! :o)

some great resources: a post about our juices and winter/dry climate use at curlynikki.com, and this post about glycerin, humidity, and hair porosity at the natural mane.

hmmmmmmmmmm WHEN DID U PURCHASE?

& is this your 1st batch? (meaning did it seem different another time?

hmmmmmmmmmmmm:lachen::lachen::lachen: they took a little over a week to arrive (after BF)

I'm really hating that ya'll had a bad experience with this conditioner....my hair LOVES this stuff!!! It moisturizes it so well and helps BIG times with my tangles!!! Both my natural and relaxed hair love it......send me your bottle if you really really don't like it.:D

I've tried it in the past and was never wowed by it's performance on my hair. It wasn't a bad condish, it just didn't do anything special IMO, wasn't worth ordering online, paying for shipping and waiting for my purchase.

I almost hate to mention how much I love this conditioner. :look: When I went to the store I decided to try several of the products, so I went home and washed with the Poo Bar, conditioned with Honey Hemp, I used the whipped pudding as a moisturizer. My hair was gorgeous! :lick: My hair was very soft and dried without that crispy feeling you all describe. (I'm familiar with that feeling from other products, however.)

It's too bad you all are having such opposite reactions, I don't think I've had better co-washes with any product.
