I always find there's resistance when I fingercomb my hair. Yesterday, I used condish as a moisturiser (faith in nature), then oil (rapeseed) on the ends/length of my hair. Should you wet/spritz your hair first? Am I missing a step? I'd love to be able to glide on through my hair the next day

I usually dampen hair first then add conditioner.

Spray bottle. One of the types with adjustable nozzles so that you can use it year round (whether your mix is thick or thin.)

And do all you ladies find it easy to comb through your hair when moisturising with conditioner? How do you know if you've overdone it? What tweaks did you make? Pls be specific

When using a conditioner as a moisturizer, I always use it when in the shower. For example, I do my usual detangling in the shower with a denman and since I wear buns most of the time, I apply a generous amount of Suave Humectant on sopping wet hair, seal with oil denman once more then put it up in a bun before stepping out of the shower...hair is done and put up before I towel off!

I just add my conditioner to a spray bottle and add water. I don't measure anything and it comes out differently everytime I make it I'm sure. Maybe 25% condish and 75% water but there are times when I just use straight up conditioner. It all works but I rather dilute it to prevent buildup since I rarely shampoo. I don't add oil, although I have thought about it. But I'd rather do the sealing afterwards....just a personal preference. I only comb my hair about once a month and I use aubrey organics honeysuckle rose conditioner straight out the bottle as my leave in. This is a different conditioner than what I usually use as a leave in (Vo5). The aubrey organics is very good at detangling my hair. The amount of slip you get will depend on what conditioner you use.

Thanks for the replies! I've been busy with uni, so sorry I've been sloww in responding. I never know if my big hair is dry hair though. Because sometimes I'll moisturise with just condish, and my hair will get big quickly.. volume-wise, yet will dry quickly as well. Does anyone's hair do that? I just got my ph strips today:D, but I would love to know why my hair will puff up after I've just finished moisturising..?

You may just have to play around with different mixes and different conditioners to find what your hair really likes. I've tried a few natural conditioners and my hair HATED them. I had massive tangles, dryness, and overall it just wasn't happy. When I went back to my tried and true (Herbal Essence LTR or the one for color) my grass was ecstatic. You tweak it based on what your hair needs more/less of ya know?

I mix a small amount of glycerin, oil (evoo, vitamin E, castor blend), and conditioner in my bottle and shake. When it's blended I add rosewater or bottled/distilled water. So far so good. :yep:

@iluvzmuhgrass -thank you. What a good idea with adding oil directly to the bottle (once you've found what you like). How much is a little? And lovely hair btw

UPDATE: I realised the condish is probably stretching out my NG, which is what's making my hair 'big'. And I have quite a bit of NG (4 1/2 months post now) so I'm gonna relax sometime this month.. Smoothing the conditioner in my hair as I go along helps (thanks ciccina), so I probably won't stick to a spray for now.

I agree with the PP because I use conditioners in two different ways:

- As a spritz: In a spray bottle, I combine 8oz of water and 2oz of conditioner (I prefer to use either Giovanni 50:50 Balanced or Yes to Carrots Pampering Hair Mud since they are creamy, moisturizing and have nice ingredient lists) along with some Vitamin E, a few drops of Carrot Seed EO, a dash of Jojoba, and several teaspoons of oils (I am currently using Hemp Seed, Sunflower, Safflower, Babassu and JBCO). Using a spritz allows me to effectively refresh my air dried hair; I am also able to successfully finger detangle.

- As a modified leave-in: I add approximately 1-2oz of water and a couple of tablespoons of oil to the conditioner bottle/container. I use this mixture when I desire smoothness as opposed to a coil fresher.

I don’t bother with other moisturizers or a sealant while using either of these.

PJaye -Do you mean OP? If not, what's PP short for? And I just think using condish is so much easier, like what you've been doing:yep:. Thanks for replying

sungtongs How many parts water vs conditioner do you use? Do you add oil as well, to avoid sealing afterwards?

Sorry, I never saw this! Probably like 1 part conditioner to 4 parts water. I'm worried about buildup.
I don't add any oils, I'm just lazy about sealing in general.

I make a spritz of 5 parts water to 1 part AO HSR. If I add more condish than that my hair tends to get a bit gunky.

When it comes to tangles, I try to stay ahead of them by avoiding loose styles and even with buns, my hair is in twists before hand. Also washing in 6 sections and airdrying with the scarf method helps me avoid tangles. This makes fingercombing pretty much a breeze.

Thank you! Sorry I'm just now seeing this. (I'm wasn't ignoring you I promise.) I tend to use about 2-7% on average depending on what I need. I use a large container (gargantuan garden spray bottle from Big Lots for $2 bucks  I like to use the bigger bottles because I don't have to make it as often ) and I mix it directly in the container.

Now know that you can mix your own leave in for relaxed hair too just not as heavy/thick and sans the large amount of glycerin. :yep: HELTR leave in worked well for me as a relaxed head. :)

FORGOT TO ADD: If you use a scarf method with gel or other holding product, that will take down some of the puffiness and give you a sleek bun, puff, etc.

@iluvzmuhgrass -I haven't been online in a while, so it's fine ! Thank you though. I wonder how much is too much for relaxed hair..

@curlyninjagirl -I can't 'thanks' for your reply, so thanks!:grin:
Does gunky hair =buildup?
I definitely get the tangles when I do buns.. not sure if it's better to spray moisturise or use condish, then. Conditioner on its own dries on my hair so quickly

I use deep conditioner as a leave in and I don't dilute it. My hair is coarse and I don't really have issues with buildup.

Thank you^. The one or two times I used a dc as a leave-in (AO WC), I got breakage. My hair definitely felt moisturised, but it was almost like I dusted my hair. I didn't like the breakage I got from that
