I've been lurking here for a while and now I feel like I should be joining into some of these conversations and challenges.
My hair was relaxed for the first time when I was eleven. It was maybe a little below bra strap then. It straightened quicker, but it would still curl up when wet. My mom didn't know much about it, so she would bring me to salons to get it relaxed, and each time, they would relax ALL of my hair because they couldn't tell it had be relaxed before. Well, it got a lot shorter over the next couple of years. This pic is from my freshman year right before I quit relaxing:

I started relaxing just my crown (but it didn't last long) because how pointless it felt to relax and still have curly hair. That phase when the new growth was getting a bit longer was the worst. It always looked crazy, and when people told me, "You need to get a perm." I would just say that my hair still curls up when it's permed, I have to flat iron it anyway, and I'm not doing it anymore. They would look at me like WHHAATTT! It's still curly! Like I was an alien or something. This pic is from the next year (I think like 06 or something) when I started wearing my hair curly most of the time:

During high school, I figured out (on my own) that it was easier to detangle in the shower with conditioner on it. I also figured out that leaving my condish in and not rinsing out at all didn't hurt much. It didn't weigh down my thirsty hair (Probably saved my hair a little - DT everyday). I loaded on a crystal gel from a tub (I started using black gel, but the collar of my white school shirt would look so nasty), and rocked crunchy hair until last year.

I watched the line of relaxed hair get lower and lower (Not much difference except for color.) Here you can see some of the relaxed hair hanging on at the very end of my hair. Those bangs are now at my collarbone:

I found the curly girl method last year, then modified it to low-poo instead of cowash.
Here is a picture from Dec 2009:

And here are some pics now:

Last year I got blue highlights. The blue was semi but the bleach was not. Now you can see some henna red highlights.
