hello there chicas,

so here i am thinking i'm looking hot (or at least acceptable) here at work. i've been in two meetings (both w/ director level people) and also walked all around the office.

but here's the thing, it's 3pm in the afternoon and i have no!! idea how long it's been since my plastic showercap has been showing!

i decided to baggie this morning out in public for the first time ever and this is what happened. normally i do it at home only but after reading how so many people baggie in public here i just decided to try it. i have clear showercap, satin bonnet, plus knitted winter hat and i guess both the bonnet and the hat slipped to expose almost half of the showercap.

and oh lord it's so embarrasing!!:perplexed:perplexed the only reason i'm not crawling under my desk right now is because i have this forum where i will hopefully get some support byway of other people sharing their embarrasing mishaps had while using methods to protect or grow your hair.

so spill it ladies. don't make me be the only one :(

Well, let's see.. When I was about 15, I took the vegetable juice...that's right "vegetable juice" out of the frig and poured it over my head. I just knew I was nourishing my scalp. :badidea: :slap: It seemed like a good idea until my mother made a face passing me in the hallway and asked what that smell was....to which I said "nothing" and ran down to the basement and washed my hair out. :wacky:

Someone at church with long hair told me that her mother used carrot juice in her hair. They were from Nigeria. Now that I think about it, maybe she meant carrot oil. LOL, definitely not one of my brightest moments. :thought:

That IS embarrassing.
Before my HHJ I used to haphazardly get microbraids done (which have wrecked my hairline), but once some friends and I were out at a party and while dancing we noticed an entire braid on the floor between us. I mean the ENTIRE braid...five little real hairs with the white bulbs on each attached at the base and all. So I dance down real slick like to pick it up and we all head to the bathroom to figure out whose head it fell out of (they had micros too). So here we are at a party trying to color match ("is it 1b or 2?") and smell ("that smells like African Royale, well I use hair food"). Girls were staring at us like we were crazy. Long story short, I still--8 years late--have a super weak spot in my hairline from that incident. :nono:

Nzeee, you are not alone when it comes to baggying mishaps!

When I first heard about whole head baggying, I thought that was somthing I would try. I slathered on DC, put on a clear processing cap, threw on a wig and came to work.

About an hour into the day, my scalp began to itch like crazy! It started out with just a little itching in the front and soon spread all over. By lunch time, I was ready to go home early just to wash that mess out of my hair. This would probably have been a lot less dramatic if I'd used oil instead of DC.

My co-workers saw me scratching at my wig and kept asking what that crinkly noise was. I eventually gave up trying to hide it and told them what was going on. We all had a good laugh about it, and that was the last time I ever tried baggying with DC...at work...under a wig. Not a good combination for me!

You're not alone, girl!

LMAO! These are funny
Mine was pretty recent. I tried making that caramel mix for my hair when I was lurking and not so into YT, so I had no idea how it was supposed to look, feel, etc. I didn't have a blender so I decided it was ok to mash two barely ripe bananas (like yellow yellow with no spots) into the mix. I applied it all over my hair while DH stood in the doorway shaking his head.

Long story short, I had banana pieces ALL in my hair that DH had to help me pick/rip out. I washed vigorously and I still had tons of it all over the place so I thought it was a good idea to let it dry and maybe I could brush some of it out :nono: I had banana pieces in the shower for days afterwards and kept finding them in my hair at random moments. To top it all off, DH thought it was hilarious to tell all his coworkers about it and at a family day event the next week his boss decided to re-tell the story to all the other co-workers and their families so they could all laugh their butts off

:grin::grin::grin::grin::grin::lachen:

this is amazing. awwwww, thanks girls for adding your stories. really makes me feel better :)

i just realized that the common thread among us is that our mishaps happened while trying something for the first time (except for the microbraid detective episode ;). it's hard having witnesses to our first-time trials, esp when they don't work out.

anyone else have stuff to share?

mine was wearing a wig cap under my winter hat, but got on the bus, took of my hat and forgot about the wig cap, so there I was, all dressed nicely for work with this tiny wig cap on my head like a yarmulke lol

Danysedai, I actually laughed out loud! I could picture you on the bus with the wig cap on! LOL! Good one! :)

If my hair is straight and it rains (which it always do), I will go out in a plastic cap with the quickness. I look a H.A.M. but I am not spending another 3 hours flat ironing

This summer, in an effort to aid detangling (because a good sneeze will cause my hair to tangle), I opted to continuously air dry my hair in 4-6 braids since I barely venture out of the house during the summer. Until one day, some guy tried to harass my son on his way home and got pepper sprayed for his trouble. There I was trying to sort out a dispute with my son, the police and the guy (who was gasping for air and acting as if he had encountered Jackie Chan in an alley) all while looking as if I had just come from hearing Miss Sug sang at the juke joint. I will never, ever, ever wear my hair like that again.

danysedai: I pictured you demurely sitting with your legs crossed at the ankles and your hands folded in your lap while wearing that wig cap.

LOLLL @ Shug at the Juke Joint...

Okay, I'll bite.

How 'bout I was new to ayurveda (two years ago) and was prepooing with amla oil... I was so intense that I'd leave it in, on top of conditioner, wetbun and go to school...Why was I all animated talking and motioning and jazz while meeting with a team member- thinking I'm looking so cute, and I kept fiddling with my ear - like something was just there on my neck, bothering me? So, finally, when my colleague's eyes kept running to my neckline, I decided to just haphazardly touch my neck. I was alarmed, mortified and filled with dismay. My hand was soaked with Amla Oil!

I immediately ran to the powder room - and sure enough, I had a big, puke green oil slick running down the side of my neck, soaking my blouse! I'd overapplied the fraggety oil!!! I was SOSOOSOSOooooo embarassed, I just wanted to crawl and hide.

I am soo cautious whenever i apply that oil, that I now use it only AT NIGHT.

M. Barrasing.

lmao...one time me and my friend were in the student union and she just ran her fingers through her hair and a whole braid just came out...i just looked and bust out laughing b/c it was so random...

in the 5th grade my mom put my braided my hair up in a ponytail and left the ends out and put rollers on them...in a rush to get to school, i missed some of the rollers...nobody told me i had rollers in my hair until the end of the day :perplexed ...

also in 5th grade me and my bestie had a frenemy who came to school on picture day with a phony pony and tried to tell us it was her real hair...we werent stupid lol so like every period me and my bff would go up to her and be like "ooh your hair is so cute" and play with the ponytail in admiration, and sneak and take a bobbypin out...we didnt take our pictures till the end of the day and i guess with all the missing bobbypins her ponytail couldnt stay in place and started to tilt/fall off...so in her 5th grade yearbook pic her fake ponytail is leanin to the side all lopsided and whatnot hanging on for dear life lmao :lachen:

Wow. OP, I don't understand how nobody pulled you to the side and told you what you had going on.

Anyway, the most embarrassing hair moments usually involve me forgetting to take rollers out of my hair. Once it was not only rollers but the scarf on top of the rollers also. No one said anything all day either.

i KNOW!!! right?? typical tho; i'm one of only 2 black women in a company of many. i work at a large ad agency in canada and being advertising everyone is very into their looks and being largely white everyone is very... careful when interacting w/ the coloured folk. you know how it is i'm sure.

I wear the plastic bags on my hair under my wig 2 all the time. I told some of the people at work that and they just really get a kick out of it! Also something i probably wont ever tell ppl that i do is put cootie cream (monistat) on my hair sometimes!

This did not happen to me but my 15 year old daughter, She was invited to a cookout & a young teen was there that had a crush on her. There were teens jumping on a trampoline and she decided to jump.Of all days she had a phony pony tail on.As she and her friends fell down on the trampoline her phony ponytail got caught in one of the metal springs around the edge of the trampoline,(SHE WAS STUCK), as she tried to free herself the phony ponytail came off stuck in the spring, she was so embarrassed, but the young man was a gentleman, he helped her off the trampoline, got her phony ponytail unstuck and said :It's ok.My daughter has never wore a phony ponytail since. But of course her friends were laughing their behinds off.And the adults were snickering,

Probably just thought it was a Black thang' that they wouldn't have understood, lol!

Lol, I'm not sure if this counts as protecting, but I used to be obsessed with keeping in moisture, so id overload the length of my hair with coconut oil. I just reeeeally wanted to keep that moisture in, so much so that I'd be walking around with a shiny arse head of hair dripping coconut oil, looking like something out of a Soul Glow commercial, lmao. My mom was like "Baby, just don't lean all the way back, you'll ruin my couch."

SMH. I have since learned that with oils especially, sometimes less is more. Lol. :lachen:

One would think I know better but I always surprise myself.

This summer I was thinking about natural highlights and remembered people mentioning cinnoman.
So I mix up a batch of ground cinnoman, honey, coconut oil, a squirt of hempseed and castor oils, slapp in on my wet head and sat out in the sun for hours.
Nothing happened.

2 days later I'm feeling good, fly, got time and money to kill so I make a lunch date with some friends and head out on the town.
My hair is in a high puff and I am fluffing every ten minutes so it can reach it's full, glorious volume.

I have a great lunch, a glass of wine or two and hit the stores.
After a while I reach Hugo Boss and try on this BEAUTIFUL white silkdress (that I could never afford). When I take it off it notice that it has brown specks and ring around the collar. I hand it to the salesperson and inform her of it's sorry state.

When I get home, hours later, I wash my hands and glance in the 2-way mirror.
The shoulders and back of my white t-shirt is COVERED in brown specks!!!!

Oh, LAWD it was the cinnamon STILL in my hair!!!!! Clumping and falling like brown dandruff. I was soooo embarressed!

Kind of devastated even because there I was, strolling around thinking I was the bomb, wearing my "I see short people" t-shirt looking like a dirty FOOL.

These posts are HILARIOUS!

Compared to these my story isn't all that embarrassing, just weird. I drive around town with a silk scarf (leopard print:lachen:) tied around the head rest of my seat-- I call it my ghetto head rest. I couldn't for the life of me find a satin cover for that thing hence the scarf. Folks give me the side eye all time but I don't care. I went to pick up a friend visiting from out of town once, he took one look at my head rest, wrinkled up his face and said "what is that about?" Telling me I have a nice car but the scarf thing just kills it. Whatever. I told him "my hair is more important than my rep!" As I proceeded to sail through traffic, windows down with the ends of my scarf billowing behind me like a super hero's cape.

ETA: :perplexed Surely there are ladies on this site that do the same... if not please hook a sister up with some appropriate head rests

Right now, off work. I'm cheap, no steamer equipment so I'm homemade. Turbie towel microwaved and another microwaved towel on top of that...and a Journeys tall black bag on my head. It works. Thing is, I'm expecting a package today and when they ring, I'm not going to run to take off my 2 ft. helmut, I'm keeping it on. LOL.

I remember vaguely reading once about using avocados in your hair for moisture. I assumed you bought the avocado, smashed it as best as you could, and slathered it all over your head.

...yeeeeeaaaaah, that didn't work out so nicely. I was scrubbing little green pieces out of my hair for hours afterward. =/

This thread is hilarious, I have nothing to share because I'm quite lazy when it comes to protecting my hair outside the house. One thing that's weird to me is how no one says anything to you in the west. In my country, social boundaries are almost non-existence, you would definitely get pulled aside by someone, especially by the older women.

Great Thread!!!

OK, I've never told this story to anyone, but here goes -

It was back in the 80's when I was in junior high. Somehow I'd heard that mink oil would grow hair. Well, I was having major hair issues, so I bought some to put in my hair. When I opened the container, the smell just about knocked me out! But hey, I was desperate to get some long hair dangit!

Not only did I put that stuff on my scalp, I rubbed a TON of it through the length of my hair! :nono: I didn't have sense enough to do this on a Friday, nooooo, I did it on a Tuesday when I would have to go to school the next day. It was a disaster! My hair smelled up every classroom I went to. My only saving grace was that nobody could figure out that it was coming from my hair. I couldn't wait to get home and wash that crap out! Too bad there was no LHCF back then to help me out.

Bumping :)

I was perusing my subs with a mind to clean out all the old ones and came across this gem.

Yes, I started it, and its been a while but it's still relevant. And honestly, if I wasn't one of the embarassees I'd be ugly-laughing in secret

OK newbies (or oldies with no shame) tell us what craziness you've pulled in the name of protective styling or achieving 'healthy' hair. Spill it ladies :D
